I remember the good old days of car modifying. Biggest problem we used to have when dropping different running gear into a RWD car was having to work out how to relocate the new gearboxes gear stick so it still stuck up in a usable location on the tunnel. :D Cars all got too complex in the last couple decades. Modification stumbling blocks used to be mechanical engineering related things, but now, the tallest hurdles are to do with getting all the little electrons dancing down the right wires.

The wiper thing, I had our base model caddy upgraded. Manual doors to remote Manual wipers to rain sensor, light sensor And here cames the thing, The light sensor for auto light also controls the rain sensor and the wipers. You need the driver and controller at the steering for auto wipers The light sensor and switch The mirror with the optical sensor. If the mirror with the light sensor is not connected the auto wipers don't work.

You're right, the rain sensing works on the LIN-BUS also :-) Interesting that you swapped the steering wheel controller- was your BCM able to handle it, or did you have to upgrade that also? Unfortunately my BCM doesn't support LIN.

I will take my hat off for you..!! I'm totally understanding why you did/doing it.. iwe done something similar (but a lot easier) in the -90-is Citroën (French car manufacturer) build the Citroën BX 16 valve "sporty" hatchback.. I wanted that car, but as an estate/wagon.. they never built it.. so a few years later when the cars here in Sweden started to be sheeper I bought a 16v hatch and a wagon.. took about a year to clone them together.. a lot of people said that you will never get the spoiler kit off the hatch without braking it, because the plastic kit was glued on to the car.. but I cut all parts out with a grinder and tiger saw, take the sheetmetal of, piece bye piece.. so after about 12 months it was ready for paint.. then it was time for the electric system, in the -90's in France they must have a big "sell out" on green and yellow cables... and I suppose that Citroën buy it all, because the whole electronic system was made of green and yellow cables.. took a couple of months to sort everything out.. but I did. Then the interior went in, I took everything from the hatch.. soo after about 2 years I went to the car inspection and get a total clean paper.. that summer I went to a lot of car meetings, was interviewed bye the Citroën owners info/newspaper.. the last thing the guy asked me was.. why? I answered..!! Because I could, and I get more excited when people on internet telling me that I never gonna get it fixed.. So even today iwe got the car Citroën newer made in my garage.. A Caddy maxi in USA is rare, keep it clean and take care. It's a really common car here in Europe, but a neck twister I USA.. 😎👍

Lol, I've been frustrated trying to make the wipers on my car work but it's nothing compared to your wiper frustrations! Basically, one of the previous owners of my car had it repainted (it's a mid-sixties car, and repaints were common back in the day), and whoever repainted it did a terrible job and painted over the wiper spindles. This made the spindles larger, which made it harder to put the wipers on, so the painter reinstalled them with a HAMMER. This broke a little aluminum triangle that holds the wiper in the correct position, causing the wiper to not work properly. Of course, nobody makes reproductions of that part because you'd have to be an idiot to actually damage it, so I had to figure out a way to JB weld it back together. But now I have a little proud smile every time I use my wipers :)

Did you consider buying a new caddy van in Europe, disassembling it, and shipping the parts over here, and bolting it to your shell, except for what needs to be US spec for safety and emissions? Buying every piece one by one, is sooo expensive and time consuming. Amazing that you pulled this off.

Well done on your build. I can see the German guys perspective I'm in South Africa and looking out my window we have 3 short wheel base caddy vans and 2 long wheel base versions. I would recommend buying parts from South Africa in future instead of Europe as your currencies are pretty closely matched whereas South Africa is approximately 20 Rands to the dollar. Only issue you may have is RSA is rhd not lhd

From what he said in the video I believe you can’t do this. Ours in the EU use the Linbus system and the us wiring loom he has uses a 2 relay system. He’s basically trying to take the signals from his relays in the loom to convert them into a linbus signal so the wiper motor he has for the the caddy will work. I’m guessing non of the US wiper motors would have worked with the caddy shape.
@JamieOrr4 жыл бұрын
This is correct ; all Caddy Van use the LINbus system, but the USA chassis harness uses Relays. I could fit the full Caddy harness (I have two here) but then I would need to retrofit the full engine, emissions, and airbag systems to the USA style. I decided it was easier to make the wipers work on their own, than do that. But I still haven’t found the time :-)

@@JamieOrr the arduino way was a good solution too:) u can even make it whit a rain sensor if u program it right but u still need a switch for the legit right? here in the netherlands it is

Putting a raw caddy in a moving car is a bogus job. German engineers art. But I saw you had a white Mk3 Fiesta, these are my toys. You have my full respect for the work you have done. I'm crazy too and build cars from scratch. Greetings from crazy Germany.

I totally get the German guy not getting your excitement about exporting the most mundane car offered here to the US. But it's great to see your dedication for this thing which is just considered disposable here in Germany
