This Video is the simplified version. Check out the more detailed version here: bit.ly/2KeHvGT
I built this cargo bike with two old bikes I got for 50$. If you want to do the same, I believe you could basically buy all the tools (excluding the metal band saw) and the metal and still be under the average price that long john cargo bikes sell for! MAKE THINGS!
I make bi-weekly videos. Please please help me out and subscribe :)

Hi Phil! I think I just had some harder wood around it it seemed to work alright, the break posts,,,, could have been better 😬 but the brakes work fine. I think I worked on the bike for two and a half weeks but I was working part time so I had lots of time!

Nice build! I'm with Phil re: those jigs. Looks like it made things a lot easier for you. I am finishing up a longjohn cargo bike as well but I didn't film much of the construction at all, mostly just "in progress" shots posted to my Instagram feed. The shop were I have been building it hasn't exactly been conducive to setting up cameras. Seems like you planned out your jigs and such a lot better than I did with mine. I had a lot of frustration in my build and there's so much I'd change the second time around. I wanted wooded jigs, but since I elected to torch-braze my frame together it just seemed like a super-bad idea! I fillet-brazed almost the entire frame because I was afraid my flux core welder would burn holes in the frame tubes far too easily. Once I was almost done I started using the welder for things like attaching some frame gussets, the rear disc brake mount, etc. and realized I could've been using the welder all along as the danger of burning holes in the tubes isn't *that* big of a deal. All in all, I liked the build and I like your approach. If you decide to electrify it, feel free to contact me for advice. I've been using an em3ev kit on three different bikes now and I have a pretty good feel for what makes a good motor setup for cargo bikes and what to look for to get good value for the money. Cargo bikes need power and range, not top speed, so be careful what you spend your money on as a lot of stuff for sale here in the US is geared towards people who want to just go fast or rip up trails with an electric motorcycle masquerading as a mountain bike.
@PhilVandelay
@PhilVandelay 5 жыл бұрын
@@velocelt I've seen some very simple jigs made from just square tube and some all thread, I've actually thought about making a video on one of those since I also want to build another Long John.. I'm also planning to build something else which will have a motor and I could probably use your advice too! The market on electric bike stuff is crazy big now and for people who want to build themselves it gets even more complicated...
@velocelt
@velocelt 5 жыл бұрын
@@PhilVandelay - I've already decided that my next jig is going to be a combination of the DIY traditional design using 80/20 aluminum extrusions with some additions to allow me to make longjohns, cycle trucks, "omniums," etc. I want a traditional design because next time I don't want to mess around with finding an appropriate frame to cut up for just the back portion of the bike. The old Schwinn frame I used was nice Taiwan-made cromoly, but I found out once I got it home that the rear triangle was tweaked pretty bad. I spent a lot of time cold-setting that rear part straight. I'd rather just build the entire frame, and now I'm looking at getting into TIG welding and maybe doing a "regular" 650b gravel-grinder type bike, hence the need for a more traditional jig. Feel free to hit me up for advice on the electrics. I even know a little bit about the European limitations on wattages and such. At the very least I can offer some suggestions on motors and batteries and the like, as well as suppliers.

Nice Video. I think you had a great idea with making the wooden Board to bring the base into place. A clever way to make sure all Parts can be seen at the position they need to be. I think of trying to build my own too so this was amazing Input 4 me. thx a lot.
