Craig and Chandra, no matter what the pitch of your roof is, it will be perfect for you. I regularly use a roof rake (as you're intending to do) even on my (very) sloped roof when the snow really accumulates. But sometimes the wind just blows it off. Sometimes, it evaporates. Sometimes, it melts. Depends. I really wish you could take a couple of days off, but with winter moving in, time is of the essence. Lookin good... I know it doesn't make a lot of difference, but I'm curious why you didn't stain all of the rafter boards before you put them up ? That way you could have sealed the ledger boards, the rafter ends and the birds mouth cuts like you did on the upper bracing boards. That and it seems like it would be easier doing the staining before they were put up. Either way, it's going to look really good and last for years.
@ouralaskahomesteadАй бұрын
For you. lol We try to release videos on Fridays but didn't get finished and with Craig working by himself, the only way to get all the rafters on in time to have the video ready for today was to wait to stain everything. It's so chilly its taking the better part of a day for the stain to dry. So, he's working on staining everything today. It definitely would have been easier to have it done first.

You did a great with the deck and rafters, myself if it was me, I would have went up another 8 to 10 inches where you anchored to the home. Being your snow fall and how much you get and weight wise. I'd be careful of the the slope and weight. 10 to 15 inches of snow is heavy and if it's a wet snow it's a lot of tonage. But it did turn out good

Yes, that part of the porch is going to be closed in as a utility room to hold the water tank, solar components, water heater and eventually a washer/dryer. We'll use a diesel heater to keep it warm.
@brendasmith6076Ай бұрын
Why are you not staining the rafters before putting them up?
@ouralaskahomesteadАй бұрын
We ran out of time. It would have been easier to stain first but its been chilly and the stain takes most of the day to dry. So it was either stain now and have no video for Saturday or get the rafters up and stain later. Craigs got them all stained now.

I hope your not sorry when the snow comes off your roof and lands on your stairs??
@vickievixen3785Ай бұрын
I believe in the first or second video they asked for suggestions and thoughts on whether to keep the stairs Under The Roof. I thought maybe moving it back two or three feet and putting the stairs back two or three feet would keep the snow off the stairs and be safer in the long run. Yes they could be battling getting the door open but in New England when we knew we were going to get dumped on we went out every couple of hours and cleared it off. I made my comment with my thoughts in the comment section. I don't know, they don't seem to be the type of people who would just go to bed and forget about being able to open the door. But with the deck there they can always climb out a window. I think they are intending to put some type of Windows in. I believe they said one side was going to be closed off where that water tank is going and the other side is going to be left kind of open but knowing Craig he just makes changes as he goes but he's always letting us know. He's very adaptable I have to say. As long as I'm not shoveling it, it makes no difference to me. Lol. The idea of an Arctic entry is to make things easier. I don't think it was their intentions to make it the same as what it is now but that's just my opinion. Low voltage wire that they install under floors it would melt the snow on the roof and maybe on their steps as well. Who knows if they don't somebody needs to invent it

Different Strokes for different folks. I guess they did what they wanted. Funny I think it's their house. Wouldn't it be strange if they listened to what everybody else thought was right for them, because it's what they would have done. In my opinion if you want the say so, then go do it yourself. There ya go another opinion and you know what they say about them yes they both stink, mine and yours. If you don't want someone to give you their opinion, then think twice before you give yours. Who says a bed won't fit up there? A mattress on a hard surface you got yourself a bed. A box frame.. bam a nightstand. Couple of boards attached to the wall, wow what a nice headboard. Suggestions are helpful. Acting like a boss or a parent isn't.
@ouralaskahomesteadАй бұрын
We could have but there's just the two of us so no need for a bed up there. We're just using it for storage. A mattress will fit and a person can sit upright if a need arose. The plan is to do a guest/AirBNB cabin up front so if Chris ever decides to come home for a visit he can always stay in there.

Too all of the carpenter's commenting on my post. I would agree that those "racking BRACES would help shoulder the load IF they were mortised into the post. Screws are not the anchor of choice for sheer. His lapp joint has lost it's effectiveness by half without it resting on the post. So I stand by my statement that his lapp joint is incorrect and it is the weak point in his roof... I have no idea what the standard for snow load is where he lives. It may never be tested.... I am only trying to give him useful information so if he does any more construction of this nature he has CORRECT information.This comes from 40+ years of building houses.
@AlaskaguitarguyАй бұрын
Those look like log screws and they have a pretty high sheer strength. You’re right it should be directly over the post to get 100% of the load but it’ll hold and that’s from over 50 years building. I’ve seen things in 100 -plus year old houses that most wouldn’t think would work but Iit stood the test of time.
