As for chain saw recommendations, I just received the little Saker mini-chainsaw you guys reviewed a couple of months back! That thing will not make a dent in your work but is useful for me in cutting up fallen branches here in New Jersey. I am wondering, given the amount of use your chainsaw gets, do you sharpen your own chainsaw chains or just replace them? Do you split by hand or with a splitter? Can you show us that part?
@ouralaskahomestead
@ouralaskahomestead Сағат бұрын
Those little Sakers are great for small jobs. We still use ours. Yes, we sharpen our own chains and do some by hand and some with a rented splitter. We still have more wood to process so I’ll film splitting and sharpening in that one.

Will you insulate? Have been debating if insulation would do anything. With a uninsulated floor insulationg the walls might not do much. Although might help moderate swings a little.. Might also help keep mice out of the cavities of the wall? Might keep it a few degrees warmer with the mass of water in the room for the overnight dips in temperature?
@ouralaskahomestead
@ouralaskahomestead Күн бұрын
We did mention in the video (maybe it was part 1 video) we will insulate the floor walls and ceiling and we’ve already got a diesel heater to keep it warm since this area will hold the water tank and solar batteries.

Termites are always possibly in cut logs. Storing them on the porch next to a wood deck is inviting the potential for termites to come in.

Once you figure out where the tank will sit you will need to put some cement blocking under the porch for its support. Water weighs about 8.35 pounds per gallon. (i.e. 400 pounds for a 50-gallon tank). I would also set it on a metal drip pan (the same one that goes under a water heater. It can be piped to drain out the side wall in case of leaks.)
@ouralaskahomestead
@ouralaskahomestead Күн бұрын
This is a 210gallon tank so it will be quite heavy filled. It’s much too large for the hot water pans but maybe some type of custom made box lined with plastic or something. We did beef up that portion of the deck in this previous video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rZnceGOgmbt5eNUsi=o8w51YPNX63kiIRL

@@ouralaskahomestead I would just make a box out of cedar then get some of the rubber matting used to line shower pans and cover it with that. That will last a long time. I did not see that video so I am glad you are thinking ahead.

I would not recommend putting both outer doors in a direct line. This will allow the wind to flow in directly.

Ideally they won’t both be open at the same time. Enter through the first door, close it, round the corner to the coat rack, remove coats/boots and then proceed to open second door.

You asked for advice on trimming out the base of the T-11 siding wall, ok. Cut a thin slice of cedar as wide as the space from one inch past the outer edge of the porch to the base of the outside of the wall. Cut the board about an inch thick. Set your saw to a 12-degree angle and slice the board. This will allow water to drain off. Turn the board upside down and about half an inch from the outside edge cut a small groove along the edge about 1/2 an inch in. This is a drip edge so water can bead back in under the board. Cut the wall side edge with a bevel to match the angle of the wall. This will mean a tight fit against the T-11-sided wall. Once your board is cut and dry fit correctly, lay down a thick bead of clear silicone along the back edge and around the sides. Press the board into the caulk and push it firmly into place. Pre-drill the screw holes and include a counter sink bevel for each screw. Once all screws are in and countersunk, grab some sawdust and some wood glue and mix the two together to make a thick mix. Use a stick or something to press the mix into each screw hole. Once this dries you will not be able to see the holes. You can put a vertical piece of baseboard along the bottom of the wall but just remember to bevel the bottom and top edges so water flows off the top and the bottom edge matches tightly to the beveled board. Caulk along the top edge of that board and wipe into the gap with a paper towel so it is forced into the crack.

@GoodwillCriminalsOfDallas

Measure up 4 feet from the bottom and install blocking that spans across the 4-foot mark. This way you will have full support across the joint of the siding. I would have stapled a sill gasket on the bottom of the stud wall before raising it. This would seal against air drafts from blowing wind. Before you side, staple up some 90# tar paper overlapping the joints about 6 inches. Tape the joints. Angle the staples for better adhesion. Put the bottom edge of the tar paper just over the bottom of the new wall so it covers the joint onto the old porch edge. Tar paper is hydrophobic so water will run off. Piled-up snow will not soak into the siding. Just make sure to leave a way to insulate in the corner area otherwise you will have a cold zone there. You can then wrap the walls with the tyvek and tape it. this will create an air barrier.
