As someone who has helped design and install a course I absolutely commend you for your drive! I think more people need to watch this too even have a minuscule of an idea how much work it takes to carve out something from nothing. The problem is everyone wants to play and complain but not put in the time to help. And then there’s maintaining it after the fact… I am still the course superintendent I guess you could say. I put in 1800 hours of time in coursework in the last 4 years, $26,000 of my own money in materials and equipment, and more blood, sweat, and tears than I could ever explain. But, I love it and look at it as my calling and the one thing that I can leave behind long after I’m gone.
@APRdiscGolfEntertainment Жыл бұрын
Thanks, Eric! Folks like you and I are clearly cut from the same cloth! It’s good to hear there’s others out there! People often say “grow the sport” but forget to include growing the foundation of the sport, which is the courses! If we don’t donate time, money, and effort as a community… eventually the sport will turn into pay-to-play courses with t-times and loose a little bit of the disc golf freedom we all appreciated when we first started.
@ericjageman5862 Жыл бұрын
What is the course called? I will put it on my wishlist if and when I come to Wisconsin. I am from Pittsburgh and I plan on making a disc golf road trip up to Michigan and circling up and around the lake and coming back down around to come home. It will be four new states for me and multiple courses.

@APRdiscGolfEntertainment Жыл бұрын
@@DiscgolfJerry I don’t know what “buffles” are, but I do know this… I planted that grass, and if I didn’t, the only thing that would be growing there is buckthorn🤠😂
@micah_lee Жыл бұрын
As a someone studying forest management and someone that loves ecology, No, Euroasian turf grasses do not belong in American forests. Planting non-native grass is not a great thing. Hut in this case it will prove to just be inert most likely. And in that case it is way better than buckthorn. Large herbivores did historically help keep park like savannas but this is not what it looked like. Plus in most of america we used to have a burn cycle from native americans that allowed savannnas and grasslands to persist across much of america. Today we have a problem where all of our natural areas are just highly productive closed canopy forests, where we need a variety of ecosystemz that would include native grasses and flowers that support our insects and birds and other animals.
@APRdiscGolfEntertainment Жыл бұрын
@@micah_lee I appreciate the insight! I’ll give you some specifics regarding the grass… it’s a blend of 45% hard fescue, 40% sheep fescue, and 15% annual rye. In the future we’ll continue to over seed with only the fine fescues. We needed a shade tolerant grass that could handle high traffic and low maintenance. We might also add some creeping red in a few spots throughout the course and possibly some chewings in a few areas that get high sun exposure. There are also a couple extremely sloped areas that we would like to get some kinnikinnick growing.

Beautiful! I've done a similar job of clearing out a three-hole course on my property, got the poison ivy/oak scars to prove it, lol. If you lived anywhere near central Texas (you obviously don't w/ all that snow), I'd be more than happy to haul out those three downed trees with my tractor. But the fallen trees do add some unique character to the hole. Making me regret a couple I've removed.

@APRdiscGolfEntertainment Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Glad you love it! It was pretty easy to decide what to keep on this property. Oaks, cedar, cherry, elm(good ones) all needed to stay. Buckthorn, honeysuckle, and prickly ash on the fairways had to go! Any ash trees in the fairways were removed(emerald ash borers had already started killing most of them😢). Anything dead on the ground or leaning that was in the way of walking or flight paths got removed. Anything dead on the ground that wasn’t in the way of paths stayed🤠. The course was mostly designed around the mature oaks. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention the pine, maple, and boxelder. All maple and pine stayed unless they were dead. Boxelder could be removed if it was in the way or stay if it helped shape the fairway.

Does your course get much traffic? Would love to get nice grassy fairways going but not sure if it will hold up on a course that gets up to a hundred players a week.
@APRdiscGolfEntertainment Жыл бұрын
That is the ultimate question! The course isn’t open yet. We removed 4 acres of buckthorn and replaced it with a low grow/no mow fine fescue grass seed blend(which grows in shade and is supposedly good for high traffic). We’ve gave the grass a full growing season(or one year) to establish and will lightly over seed this spring before opening. Then we’ll see… We’re anticipating single track walking paths will eventually wear in where there is high traffic, but the majority of the fairway will stay nice and grassy🤞🏼

@mattlance4272 Жыл бұрын
@@APRdiscGolfEntertainment I'm not saying destroying anything. You can use a track skid to not disturb the soil to much. Seed it and use the tracks to push the seed into the soil. Use the bucket to dig the tee pad and move the soil in and around it. Jmo based on years of equipment operation in and around manicured ground or extreme erosion prone soils.
