You've literally changed my mind about people who keep snakes and a bit about snakes themselves! I used to shun them. Especially as pets. I don't think I'll ever keep one due to the missing "affection" a snake can show you compared to a dog (yeah I know.. it's an unfair comparison) and I've never advocated anyone keeping a snake or reptile in an enclosure as a pet. You've changed my mind on that part. Maybe not to a full 180 :) but you've definitely changed it for the better. The love, affection and sheer determination you put into it is admirable and respectable. Just getting in there and helping that snake out, building her a new enclosure and tackling a big and new aspect of what you do just because the snake happened to be in need of someone to take care of her really speaks for you. So even if I don't keep a snake myself I do enjoy your videos. So much so that I've subscribed. And set the "dinger" to get updates on her :) Keep up the good work!

it depends on how you define affection, when they`re completely calm around you and you can pet them, it`s because the snake trusts you, a dog will really love you but it`s a completely different animal, snakes don`t show signs of liking someone but certainly trust someone
@Mekose
@Mekose 5 жыл бұрын
I haven't had a ton of exposure to snakes like goherping here but I've had a ball python before and a few reptiles and honestly it's hard to say they weren't affectionate. A snake can, just like nearly every animal, feel the atmosphere and form a bond of trust and familiarity with people. Snakes also enjoy warmth and are curious creatures, so they will enjoy smelling and exploring and getting familiar with their owners. A snake will totally coil around you for warmth and seems to enjoy contact and light scritches; they don't have the same social structure or interaction methods of most animals (dog tail wag/licking or cat marking you with their cheek rubs) but I personally believe they are affectionate and enjoy handling from people they trust.

GoHerping. From one Boa keeper to another, I love your setup so far and what you plan on adding. Besides a branch to climb on which others have already mentioned it would be good to add small vents on the back and/or sides of the enclosure to allow more air ventilation. Also a radiant heat panel will probably work better for a snake and enclosure of that size. The led lights will be fine as long as they're on a timer or if you keep up with the day/night cycle yourself. Good luck! ☺ Edit: She needs deeper/more substrate as well. It looked sort of sparse at the end. If you ever had any questions about boas or their care I'd be happy to help! Edit #2: saw someone mention fake plants. They actually work great for hides and so does moss. My boa uses the plants and moss more than anything else and the moss helps a lot with the humidity as well.

@notmissing-gonefishing50
@notmissing-gonefishing50 4 жыл бұрын
@@RezaWorlock how big is the snake? Most go by the "an enclosure that the front and one side are equal or larger than the size of the snake". Really it depends on how much money you have to spend and how big your snake is.

You did a great job reading her body language and cues, and holding her appropriately! Around a leg, the waist, under and arm, over the shoulder are all great positions for large snakes, and it is always good to keep hooks on hand just in case. Keep in mind she needs good humidity, im sure she will fire up a little and be more comfortable if given not only a nice warm lamp (they will use uvb too of course, id stick around 6%), and they do take advantagr of basking shelves and elevation, they spend a good amount of time climbing (parrticularly when young and hunting nestling birds). Dont worry about feeding her too often, an adult boa constrictor can easily become obese if overfed. She is a great size, a big meal once a month or so should be plenty. You don't want her to be flabby and squishy, lean muscle is ideal. You did handle her confidently when retrieving her too haha, so greag work! Honestly the less time you give them to think about it, the easier it tends to be to pick them up. If you want to keep her humidity up I recommended adding a coco mulch like reptichip and mixing it into the soil to get at least 3 inches of substrate. She may even bury herself. They do tend to prefer cryptic basking too, which is where only part of the body is exposed at a time - clutter leaves, strong ferns, small trees, are their friends! She was probably very upset because she was being evicted from a long term home after not being touched like at all lol, but boas can be very chill snales with little provocation to be so. Just always be aware of where her head is, if she starts getting really tense or flighty try and get her moving to prevent a strike response, and def dont let her wrap your head or neck. Dont be afraid to ask for help either, nothing brave or smart about wrestling a 6 foot constrictor who is grympy lmao. And i guess be aware of her length when feeding and stay waaaaya away from that head! If she does wrap something she isnt supposed too always start from the tail and unwind her from tail up. If you start with the head she will just coil more tightly.

mehlahmyne is how its said basically. we use is lots in australia for our enclosures. I'd recommend putsilicone on the inner edges to prevent warping from any water spillage. I adopted a full size bredli python (i know not the same) hes only 3.3kg but he is 7"4 and tamer than her but it took a good few months for him to stop being head shy with me and actually stay on my body rather than trying to escape me. Just takes time and patience but youre doing a great job. (mine is now in process of being accustomed to lots of different people handling him so i can take him to schools)

(that baby girl Aint No Cornsnake or BallPython) Good luck! and i cant wait to see what you do next! 😁👌 ps. as far as enclosure ideas go, Long and sturdy Branches or anything she could kinda climb around on, they are mainly Terrestrial but do enjoy any sort of climbing if avaliable.

Wow, that's amazing! I'm so happy with her quick progress! It really does seem like she could have been a part of the class this whole time and that the teacher who housed her really just didn't spend any time caring for her other than feeding her. Based on the fact that there were no heating elements to her prior enclosure, it also would seem that this person didn't do their research before taking on or even after taking on such a miraculous animal. I'm glad she's thriving with someone who knows snakes well now, and I'm confident she'll become an ambassador for her species as she grows more and more accustom to her new, quieter surroundings and experienced handler. She's gorgeous. Thanks for rescuing her, even though she seemed like she'd be a pain to tame. She's really shown amazing improvement in such a short period of time. (Yes, I realize this video is old but I just watched her coming home video and this one in succession, months later. I'm sure she's even more calm now)

Snake handling is all about the handler, really. You've got to be gentle, slow, and most of all confident. I think most "aggression" problems in snakes, especially species which are normally docile, stem from improper handling. The snake can easily be frightened by jerky fast movements. Even the angriest of bullsnakes can be handled with some patience and kindness. You're doing such an awesome job with this boa

I’m sure not to many people handle snakes let alone 8 foot, 20 pound ones! You’re killing it! Keep inspiring people that snakes are friendly and not something to be feared. Even though I’m just getting into reptiles watching you handle them gives me the power to get over my fear to keep taming my reptiles and work with handling them. Not gonna lie glad I found you channel and I’m enjoying binge watching! Ps I love that you don’t cut out when your light batteries die! Give it a super real effect. Super relatable.

I want to see more videos focused on this beautiful boa. Doesn't have to be very informational. My friend has a bitey boa and I want to see how to tame it down and have positive interactions within even while it may be bitey

Love this! I'm a BP owner but have been obsessing over boas and want to get one someday. Glad you rescued this big girl. That's awful how she was neglected at the school. Also, I don't believe ball pythons need a day and night cycle as they live underground in the wild and only come out at night..light stresses them out so they don't need it. Aweseom videos! I watch your channel all the time :)

Great video! You did a great thing by rescuing this snake. Since she's in your care, she's going to be set for the rest of her life. You and Ethan do a phenomenal job taking care of your animals. You guys clearly care a ton about their well-being and present your work in a way that's both informative and entertaining. I care for, and rescue, reptiles and amphibians like you guys, but I've been unsure about making a channel showcasing it. It seems pretty daunting.

I feel like most of us were expecting a video mostly about the building instead of a short building montage and then talking about the snake

I’ve kept several red tails, they all loved to climb, spent all their time at the top of a vertical cage setup, rarely hung on the floor

She is looking great! Could you maybe add some ledges for climbing and stuff? Boas are so big that it can be difficult to find things sturdy enough for them to climb safely, so ledges are great!

I commend you for rescuing animals & giving them better homes 👍 the only thing I didnt hear you mention getting for her was some kind of tree. Boas are arboreal & hangout in trees alot. Good excise climbing too :)
