Building a Fancy Dry Kiln - Automated and Heated with Wood Waste (year 1) Timelapse

Problem: Wood waste is piling up and burning it in a pile is such a waste. Solution: Get to work creating a machine that makes lumber less bendy and shrinky that runs on wood chips.
This idea predates the youtube channel, so excuse the patchwork footage and mostly pictures. This video is intended to get you all up to speed so I can start showing you the many hours that have been put into this project. It will leave you with many questions, (put them in the comments if you like) but don't worry they will be answered in future videos.

What you don't like shakey phone cropped footage? Ya the visuals might get a bit better from now on, but no promises because its easy to loose track of cameras when things get technical. Never enough hands around either.

I think it was bought used in like the 50s or something. I’ll have to double check those numbers but it’s old. We replaced the drive motor on it a few years back so you didn’t have to wind a rope around the fan shaft to start it. Took some of the novelty out of using it, but production when up a little.

I will do a bit of focus on it in a future video, but the boiler itself seems very well built. setup is quite flexible, but takes a some work no matter how you do it.

@@andrewmartz8447 My build has pretty high upfront investment. And really I am targeting waste wood consumption, the kiln is more a byproduct of finding a use for my waste. Well that and i want to kiln dry our piano wood i guess. It's unlikely that the kiln will ever pay for the costs of the boiler and setup, but I think i can do some other cool things with it that will make it worthwhile.

Well I was looking at a IDry Vacuum kiln they cost $60,000. For the base model. A local company charges $3.00 a board foot….. at that price it pays for itself pretty quick if you keep it running all the time. But it runs purely off of electricity in Washington state we have pretty low electrical rates but I don’t like being dependent on other people for electricity so that’s why your wood boiler is intriguing to me. I would love to chat with you in person discuss cost so I can formulate a proper plan for my operation. Andrew Sawmill Services NW
