You should get into hot lime mortar (quicklime mortar); you will like it! I have just uncovered a brick fireplace that I think was made in about 1725. The lime mortar is perfect where it is sootiest, where the fire was. Perhaps the tar helps to bind it.

I'm looking at getting my first welder too, for a couple of projects - one similar to this brilliant looking project (santa maria style over a bbq rather than fire pit). Are you able to share the link for the welder and maybe say why you chose it? Cheers Would help if I looked on the main weld video wouldnt it!! Doh!

Nice build, but i have one concern, when the tables are not there, late evening, the handle sticks out, i would worry that someone bumps into it or trips over it. Either an easily removable handle, or a modification so the handle hinges flat when not in use.

Handle folds flat when not in use. Some handy design they came up with back in the days of laundry mangles. 👍
