With limited access to climbing walls for the foreseeable future, we decided that we should build ourselves a little climbing and training facility to keep us strong through self-isolation. The wood cost us £170 in total and we borrowed the holds from Yonder while they're closed! Let us know what you think!

Just a heads up for anyone building their own wall. Use nails and/or lag bolts for the framing. Screws are weak in shear. Don’t use nails for the plywood, as nails are weak in tension. Each have their own place. Be safe out there and stay healthy and sane!!!

I hate using nails. When you have to move or fix something good luck taking it apart without damaging the wood.

84v7 Climbers using nails does suck, but screws shouldn’t be used to secure members that will be loaded in shear like the frame of your wall. Lag bolts are a great alternative to nails, as they’re easier to remove and stronger anyway.

Good work! I'm actually building my own at the moment. Not for the garden, but for the living room. The biggest problem I had was to find the material as all shops are closed.

Great job.... we found a bouldering shed on ebay just before lockdown but wish we'd done this now as still rebuilding it in our garden and will have definitely cost more than £170 by the time we've finished.... mind you at least we can use it when it rains!

Hi, Great wall & thanks for posting the plan. What angle is the board - 40 degree? Realise its a lockdown wall... Just wondered... did you consider / reject a 4 board build ... maybe extending the legs with a further joist attached. Thinking the design can be adapted to a 4 board w/ kickboard (then again, height/possible planning/expense...).

I’ve just been staring at my 12 planks of timber for ages thinking if it’s better to just make a triangle or tent frame. Yours looks super strong so tent it is. Hopefully we all come out of this stronger!!
@impactroutesetting

Ye I would reccommend it like this, also means there are less vertical supports to bash into if you swing. Try to have some more verticals in the back if you have the wood though as it will reduce flex.
@Shloopy420
@Shloopy420 Жыл бұрын
@@impactroutesetting By verticals in the back do you mean the frame? 16" spacing is my go-to. You did 32in i think, not usually reserved for weight bearing structures!

Excellent build, far more practical and cheap than some others I've seen -- also great that you have volumes on it! People seldom use those on home gyms. I assume you have a tarp over the back to protect from rain and frost? I imagine that it would pool in the cross brackets otherwise. Also, that cost is ridiculously cheap -- I imagine the holds weren't included in that price? Also, where did you get lumber during lockdown?
@impactroutesetting
@impactroutesetting 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ed! The volumes were needed as we didn't have many good holds and wanted the board to be climb able for everyone in the house. We've actually made some tweaks now which we will show in our next video.

I'm gathering my energy to build something similar. Big thanks for sharing. Did you use exterior plywood? You don't use metal braces to connect the beams, do you think your method is strong enough?
@impactroutesetting
@impactroutesetting 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! We just used shuttering ply as it's likely only going to be up while this whole corona thing is happening, so went for the cheap option. Didn't use any metal brackets, although we used plywood to secure some of the joins, it's a really good one to use if you don't think the screws through the timber are enough, it's super strong though!

Did you randomly throw all the holds on and then just make your own courses afterwards? Or did you actually pre plan their placements with specific bouldering routes in mind? Also how do you know what difficulty they are?
@impactroutesetting
@impactroutesetting 4 жыл бұрын
We made another little video about how to set the board here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aWiahaaGl86gZ9k I tend not to set any boulders until the holds are on the wall, the video explains how to add the holds to give you the most variety when setting though. The difficulty tends to be a lot of a gut feel thing, the more experience you have the easier it is to compare to other benchmarks of difficulty you know. With a home wall it's less important to know how hard everything is, just try and make something up that you can do nearly do the moves or only do a few of the moves and work it until you do it!

No T-nuts? Won't you have to build a whole new one after a year of changing routes? All of the holes will begin to crack after removing the holds outside?
@impactroutesetting
@impactroutesetting 4 жыл бұрын
No, not at all. There's actually a fair few commercial walls which are screw on only and the panels tend to last 5-10 years before they need changing, that's with resetting every 6 weeks too. Ply doesn't tend to crack with screw holes either so it's no issue

What kind of ply did you use? Spoke to a supplier today and he seemed to think only marine ply would survive being out in the rain
@impactroutesetting
@impactroutesetting 4 жыл бұрын
We used shuttering ply which is low quality and cheap, purely as we're unlikely to have the board up once the lockdown is over. If you're thinking long term then marine ply would be better, along with a tarp or covering to stop most of the rain
@michaelahasnip4864
@michaelahasnip4864 4 жыл бұрын

You need way more 2x4s in behind the plywood. I did 1 foot centers between each stud. Yous likes like 4 foot center. Thats not going to have much of any strength
@impactroutesetting
@impactroutesetting 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Shawn, it's definitely very strong, very similar construction to a lot of commercial walls we have built actually. We will be adding one full vertical to reduce a little flex but we did not have the wood at the time. Of course more 2x4 will also be stronger but this is a temporary structure and doesn't need to last forever
