We've been planning on building a wall for a long time, we even had most of the supplies just stored around, but just haven't got around to it. COVID-19 hit, and it was the perfect motivator to finally get our butts moving on this.
So here is the truncated version of our bouldering wall build.
*Edit: Some people in various places have asked for a few more details, so I have a post that has some extra images and explanations: www.sendstory.ca/2020/04/26/s...
I mention it in the full build video, but here is a link to a build guide from Climber Dad which will get you almost the same thing! climberdad.blogspot.com/p/sho...

Sickkkk I am impressed that you got the t-nuts with the screws. I am way too lazy for that. I'm guessing your longer video will have the info on what hinge you used. Headed there next

I saw you already got there, but figure I'd thank you here too (hammer-ins are fine, but the screw-ins hold up a little longer).

How much did this cost?? It looks incredible and I’d love to make one myself!

It's honestly hard to say because of how much materials have fluctuated in price. There is a link in the description with more details about the build which has links to some of the supplies which might help you cost out how much it would be to build something similar. It really depends on the lumber prices right now. I think it cost me around $1000, but it's hard to be sure because I wasn't really keeping track and had already been collecting materials for a long while. Sorry if that wasn't the simple answer you were looking for, but I hope it helps! Best of luck!

Thanks dude. Your pull-up game is looking strong though. Next time you hang on a hold you are going to tear it off the wall.

Love your wall! I was wondering what you'd do about the situation in the front? You've covered the back with your tarp but do you leave the front out in the open?
@SendStory

Thanks for the complement. Since I pretty thoroughly painted all surfaces of the board, I think it's as weather sealed as it's going to get. I think the reality is that it will eventually meet it's fate, and I can only do so much, so I'll enjoy it while it lasts. Since the face is overhanging, very little weather gets at it, however my concern is more with the uv against the polyurethane holds. So I eventually plan on attaching tarps around the open face of the wall which will help with both weather and rays, hopefully using something really removable, like snaps. Honestly, I just haven't done it both because I am lazy, and I'm using to avoid going to stores. Hopefully that helps. Thanks again.

amazing video. what about to anchor it to the house wall. i was thinking to use steel rope to adjust the angle. but is too much weight
@SendStory
@SendStory 2 ай бұрын
Thanks! You can totally mount to a wall, but depending on how it's mounted and how your walls are built, it might require some bracing into the ceiling/wall, depending on the design and angles. I'm not an engineer, so I'm not completely comfortable commenting on that level of detail, but you should be able to find some examples online. In terms of adjustable walls and loads, in a similar vein to the above, I'm no engineer, but I've seen people use multiple attachment points to distribute the load across multiple points using cabling/chains. Alternatively, you could potentially use a rope/cable to adjust it, then use a locking mechanism to keep it in the position you have adjusted it to in a fixed state. It could be done with some bolts and a fixed structure, or some weight rated material that you can lengthen or shorten with a mallion. Hope that gives you some ideas to explore. If you have access to anyone who has engineering experience, I'm sure they could give you some ideas as well.

When it rains, is there a water channel under the climbing wall?
@SendStory
@SendStory 8 ай бұрын
The base of the climbing wall does touch the wooden deck at the bottom, but the deck typically doesn't allow standing water and the wood at the base of the wall is pressure treated and okay for ground contact. Again, because the wall was placed on a deck, when it is tarped, there is minimal ground water that makes it's way under the tarp/wall, however some still gets in during wind storms sometimes and unfortunately driven under the tarp and towards the wall. If you put a wall like this on paved ground, it would be best to try to keep water away using a cover/roof of some sort and try to make sure the grade of the surface drains water away from the wall instead of pooling or drawing water towards it. If you custom built the surface it is on, or have the ability to modify it, I would have some type of breaks in the ground around the wall to drive water away and keep as much out from under it. I hope that answered your question and helped.

great video. How much would you say all of the building materials costed?
@SendStory

Honestly, more than I thought. I think I over built a bit, and you could get away with less. All in, probably somewhere around $1000.

What size drill bit did you use for the t nuts?
@SendStory
@SendStory 11 ай бұрын
I used a router with a 7/16th inch bit, but a drill bit of the same size is what most use. That is based on imperial t-nuts, not sure where you are, but I think metric t-nuts for climbing holds are slightly different and if that's what you are using are if the supplier says what bit to use.
