@April - I would recommend closing the gaps in the lids. Wheeling the cans in backwards and leaving the lids on the cans open. When it's trash day, the handles to maneuver the full cans will be easily accessible and closing off the wood gaps will reduce the chance of water filling them up during the rain. Nice job!

Maybe add some wire with a clip to the lid? That way when you open the structure lid, the can lip also opens?

Great job April. One suggestion to make your life even easier. Permanently attach a properly sized bungee cord from the inside wooden lid and attach the other end to a drilled hole in your trash can. Now when the gas shock raises the wooden lid it also lifts the plastic garbage can lid. Life is good again!

April, if you place your trash cans in with the lids open and the other way around you will not have to open the trash can top and then you can just pull the can out. That is how I’ve placed mine 👍🏼 love you plans, thank you.

Love this! Just built an enclosure for my irrigation system which was a major eyesore and used this basic idea for it only on a smaller scale and didn't have a floor. Next year, plan on building this same project to enclose two large garbage containers. Will use white vinyl planking from fencing materials for sides and top. Don't need a floor because these garbage bins already sit on bricks. Thanks again. You did a great job explaining all of your steps. This was the best one I found.

April, Great job!. One suggestion though. You may wanna install a string, coat hanger, copper cable to unlatch the door latches from inside, just in case you have kids running around and trapping themselves inside. I learned my lesson when my wife trapped herself inside a tool shed many years ago. :)

April Wilkerson If you add a magnet to the lid of the trashcan and then put a magnet on a string on the enclosure lid (adjusted as needed), when you open the big lid it will pull the smaller one with it. At the same time, when you need to take the cans out, you just pull the magnet attached to the wire loose and reattach it later. We did this to all of our bins, works really nice. For magnets we used neodymium disc magnets. There are button style ones that have a hole in the middle which worked perfectly because it was easy to screw in the magnet on the lid and tie a wire on the other piece. You can find them via Google Images search under "neodymium washer magnet". Third picture, but there's also ones with tapped holes.

Hi April Great Video, I now this is a few years old now...... But if you attach a chain / rope to the inside of the lid and the other end to your trash cans, when you open the lid it will automatically open the lid to your trash cans as well. yes it does mean you have to disconnect this on trash can empting day, but it makes it easier in the long run.

With a bit of tweaking to the gas spring mounting locations, you should be able to get it to move over center and start to extend a little when the lid is in the lowest position, making the hook unnecessary. The spring will both hold the lid closed and open.

You really need to treat the underside of the floor and bearers to help prevent rot. You should also raise the bearers up from the ground on bricks or concrete block. Also place some membrane material i.e slate, building membrane or plastic or aluminum sheet between the blocks and the bearers. This will prevent any moisture rising up from the ground and soaking into the timber bearers.

Nice build. An alternative for the light is to get a little solar light. Harbor freight has them for about $10 each. Really inexpensive and works well. We added several at doors, and because they are motion actuated they only come on bright when needed. Otherwise they are discretely dim.

i’ve been creating a design in my head for a garbage storage just like yours, it’s so eerie how similar we see this project and how we want it to function. swing open doors, liftable lid, having two separate lids instead of one, even down to using gas shocks for the lids (which is what made me write this lol). granted, other people might have videos doing it the same way but i’ve only watched yours. i needed inspo for what i was gonna use to make the doors swingable, so thank you for that ! the only difference is i was going to use pallets because i can get them for free to save on costs (4 bins in total, so two pallets each for floor, lid, front/back walls, and then one for each side wall). using pallets themselves as walls , will i run into any problems besides the storage just being heavier than normal? i’m a complete amateur with woodworking projects and all i have is a drill/impact, circular, and reciprocating saw lol. thanks for any advice you’re willing to share

Once you paint you can't go back. I painted some outdoor Adirondack chairs in white and regret it. The paint won't last and you will have to repaint more than will want to. I would recommend some type of oil finish like pure lindseed oil. It's very easy to reapply.

Nice work! My idea was to elevate a platform for the trash cans. My can storage is in an alley and when they plow they cover my cans. This storm brought a thick layer of ice with snow cover. When they plowed the alley they made huge snowman like snow balls. You cannot shovel this stuff, it has to be removed by hand. My idea would be to elevate the trash can platform like three feet so they could reach the cans in storms like this.

I used a couple of cheap (£10 each) security floodlights from the local branch of Aldi to do a similar job - they have built-in motion sensors and ambient light sensors. They didn't come with the waterproof cabing though. If Aldi in the US works the same way as in the UK, you have to keep a close eye on their special offers but can get some real bargains.

I was thinking along the same lines; having something that lifts the lid. BUT instead of rope, a length of thin wire/cable with a hook with maybe a loop to catch it. Then you'd only have to slip the hook and maybe hook it out of the way. The details would have to be worked out but I think at some point not having to reach in to lift the lid will be key. ; )

Thanks for sharing. It definitely improves the looks and makes the bins critter-proof.

That came out really nice, April! I think I might have to make something like that. Not only to hide our garbage cans but to keep all the spiders and critters away haha.

I just showed this video to my daughter. We both thought it was very cool. She says she wishes she could build stuff like that. She also asked where you learned how to do all of that.
