In this video, I present my DIY go board, a classic game equipment.
Using simple construction materials, this represents a quick, inexpensive and easy woodcraft.
I included all process from design, cutting, assembling, surface treatment to refinish, with all errors I had to, and thus you also might need to deal with.
Materials used:
Spruce laminated boards, 470x500mm, 24mm thickness, 2 each
Wooden legs, 100mm height, a set of 4 moongori.com/goods/view?no=811153
Wood filler, Danish oil and transparent lacquer, etc
Tools:
Random orbit sander, with various grit sanding disks
Jigsaw, drill, etc
You can download the SketchUp schematics here:

The beauty in this board is the love and time invested in to it by its maker. No amount of money can replace that.

Superb..... Better than a kaya goban. Master piece that will last thousands of years. Just the stones and bowls and ready to play.... You give hope to those who can't afford the kaya super expensive boards. As I think, a Go set doesn't need to be so expensive.

I would venture to say that the greatest result from this project is that which you learned from it. I was happy to see that the finished result didn't have that gaudy reflective lacquer soup look, like so many similar projects do. Nice work. I have no doubt your projects will increase in difficulty and in quality.

Very nice. I'm planning on making a couple of oversized outdoor 9x9 go boards for kids in a few weeks. I found some black and white 9cm Frisbees I'm going to use as stones to make a board which is roughly 4 times as large as a regular 9x9 board (no feet though). I may use some of your techniques!

It is funny that you did same mistake that I did when drawing lines. It comes from trying to use logic instead of counting. From edge to center is 10 lines and we automatically think that we can divide this once again to get 5 + 5 lines. But we forgot that it is 10 lines not 10 squares. 10 lines make actually 9 squares. Later when I made few boards more I just created two strips of paper. One with 19 x 22mm and another 19 x 23mm. And then I used those two strips as my ruler to make marks on board. And later i used real metal ruler to draw straight lines between those marks as you did. Only difference from your method - I didn't use masking tape and I drew edge lines first. By the way - nice design of the board. I have always loved simple, angular and minimalistic boards more than those classic and expensive boards with carved legs. Only sad part is that here in Estonia there are not much Go players and my friends have different interests. So I play mainly online and I use real board only to play against AI on my phone (AI Factory - only on android). I like playing against AI Factory on board because I can then analyze and try different scenarios. One game takes usually whole week to finish one game :)

Oh my God. That's EXACTLY WHAT I DID!!!! LOL This is an excellent explanation of errors that makers may face. Also, a very detailed tip for how to draw a perfect go grid: I'll try your method when I get to make another. How did you get into this remote culture? I'm curious. :) Anyway, thank you very much for taking time to share this to the community. :) :)

@@Tinker_Box In 80s, I had in my childhood one book “1000 games” (its in estonian) and I already knew checkers and chess. And in this book was one section about boardgames, and there was picture of Shogi. I was facinated of how it looked and I let my dad to cut out shogi stones from plywood so I could paint marks on it and learn to play. Later I discovered also Xiangqui, Go, aftican Mancala and Backgammon. But because rules of Go are so simple (you can start playing after 10 minute introduction) and because one of my friends got Go board and stones for birthday, we started playing and I got hooked. He sadly didn’t. Movie Alpha Go also helped.

Great job! Neat and clean work. A piece of 0.5 or 1 mm thick felt under each leg would be perfect to avoid scratching the wooden floor and besides, it'd probably help fixing that "three leg stance" it apparently had.

@@Tinker_Box it's fine, it's just that gobans are a specific distance for the lines both length and height wise and would be useful to have an accurate template
@Tinker_Box

@@justin9202 Right. Gobans are actually specified even to the height. In my making though, I sticked to the size of individual cells, but the margins and the height aren't 100% accurate to the specification.
