Getting ready to build one, husband isn't grasping the screen bottom idea, told him it's important, the unwanted critters will fall thru. I'll definitely show him this video it will give him a good idea of what I'm asking him to help build. He gets way to technical on stuff, this should be a fun project. Thanks for a great video.

Glad you enjoyed it, and appreciate you following along 😊 The only change we are going to make is what we finish it with. I need to do more coats of wax or I'm going to end up painting it.
@karenwaitley9515 Жыл бұрын
@HomesteadFresh wax would work hua? Plus you get to keep the beautiful wood patterns,
@HomesteadFresh Жыл бұрын
Well, we do a mix of beeswax and mineral oil, but I think adding linseed oil to the mix and doing multiple coats will help. Trying to stay as natural as possible, but we get a TON of rain and may have to resort to paint.

I like it a lot! As a beginner, I'm going to try both the traditional Langstroth and the long Langstroth and decide which I like better.
@HomesteadFresh Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! We have both and like them both for different reasons. I think the horizontal hive works better for well established colonies where the traditional seems to work better for new hives coming out of a nuc - but that's just our experience. Really appreciate you stopping by and commenting 😊

Great job guys, I'm not sure about that roof mainly because I've never seen anyone do that before. Time will tell, that's definitely a build I want to do someday. 👍
@HomesteadFresh3 жыл бұрын
We've seen the pitched roof a few times, but it's not as popular... Then again, horizontal hives aren't super popular just yet either. Hoping it works out, we really liked the way it came out. Thanks so much for watching ☺️

I like watching you maken the box. But tell me how your going to get the dead bee's out of it when they die and fall on the screen bottom.??? Maybe I messed that if I did then sorry
@HomesteadFresh Жыл бұрын
Great question! We have considered making a change where we could make this removable, but in the interim, we haven't had a need. The bees have been taking care of carrying the dead out themselves. They're very tidy and do a great job cleaning up. Appreciate you following along 😊

Hows that hive doing btw? I'm thinking about doing the mesh bottom too- everything working out? Any tweaks you'd make?
@HomesteadFresh11 ай бұрын
We actually lost our hive (they swarmed). We should have done a split and kept putting it off. We do still have a standard vertical box hive that we think has settled in for the winter pretty good. We'll get this one back up and going next season. The mesh bottom worked much better than we expected - we did slide some foam board insulation in under last winter (before they got tired of us and left - lol. As far as tweaks.. we are going to give this one a quick sanding and then seal it again using a linseed oil mix. The beeswax and mineral oil mix we used did great - until the hottest part of the summer and the wax just melted away. Other than that, it's pretty good. Thanks for asking ☺️
