Familiarity breeds contempt. Absolutely amazed the workshop they went to never mentioned this. My first day as an Apprentice Joiner in 1972 I was told NO LONG HAIR OR LOOSE CLOTHING as machines portable or not take NO PRISIONERS and it's no use kicking it afterwards as they don't feel pain. These two are just lucky they've not been seriously injured before.

To help keep your cords out of your way, just lay it over your shoulder. It will trail behind you and keep it out of the tools path.

Nice to see both of their attitudes improve with the addition of her parents. I believe there are no menial tasks. None are more important than the other as they are all means to the end. Every task is important.

I’ve been watching your videos for a while now; I’m very impressed and inspired by how well you two work together. I️ know from experience how hard it is to unilaterally share the load on stressful projects...had my shirt been caught in a planer I️ would’ve shrugged it off, but if it had been my wife’s shirt I️ would have worried about it until I️ tried to take the job from her. Like I️ said, I’m impressed and inspired. Keep up the great work!

Hi Alyssa, just a heads up, when your using tools with cords over long runs try this ! Stand with the tool in your right hand, bring the cord in front of the right shoulder around the back of your neck to the left side and into the left hand and then walk off with the tool in one hand and the cords in the other which then allows you to adjust the loop around the back of your neck till it's comfortable, that way the cords away from the tool so then the if the cord gets caught on something it doesn't pull the tool. I hope I explained it properly, try it, it works really good for long runs. Seeya Rob.....you can still hold the front of the planner and the cord at the same time, and stick your pony tail down the back of your shirt collar !!

Sawdust in black plastic bags can be risky. It depends upon moisture content of the debris. Sealed in a plastic bag, the sawdust can develop heat. I have never had a bag burst into flames, but a couple of times,, the bags and dust has gotten quite warm. Store away from the structure. If one ever gets hot, it is a safe distance away
@Sailor376also
@Sailor376also 7 жыл бұрын
Nope. Spontaneous combustion is a product of moisture content, fuel, enclosed space. The classic worst contents in a bag are oily rags,, particularly oily rags from the oils used in wood finishing,, teak oil, linseed oil, tung oil, gunstock oil,,,, I believe the initial reaction is anaerobic, no oxygen, hence the sealed plastic bag aids the reaction. Fir, spruce, and pine often have true turpentines within the wood,,, those amber, waxy voids. Bag and seal enough and they can begin to warm. The do have to pass the temp of ignition,,, but that is also about when the plastic melts. Shop sawdust in a plastic bag can get warm. You place the bags outside and away from what you like. I have never had one burn, but I have had some very warm bags, and twice, both had oil finish soaked rags, the plastic bag has reached a temp that melted the bag. I learned the easy way. Seen the result without the loss to a fire. About 60 years of exposure to wood shops, and those earliest years, I was just the sweeper in my dad's shop.

not just the extra help, but, Alyssa's parents brought something else...encouragement....you can really tell a difference between Alyssa's voice/tone from pre-parental arrival and post....not so much the previous video, but in this one, the impact of two more people was probably as much an emotional win as a logistical and "to-do list" win.

When I was 11 years old my woodwork teacher here in the North east of England told me a rule " keep both hands behind the blade, and you will never need first aid" I have repeated this to every person i see with a sharp tool in their hands (Screwdrivers included) So here is your lesson from John Robson ( Mr Robson) P.S. Still got all my fingers :-)

Alyssa, tuck in that shirt girl! BTW the cord being munched by the planer, I'm in Tokyo Japan, I've bought and sold at least six of the large planers, 6" up to the 12" planers (I did make you an offer to get one and send it to you for cost in the spring but you found on there). I think every single one of the used planers that I've gone through have ALL had the cord munched and taped up. Remember these are all bought from professional Japanese carpenters, not a young couple learning to build their own house while building it. You guys are rocking it! Cheers from Tokyo Japan!

Heres an old cable runners trick. Make a loup of the wire leaving enough to operate the planer. Tuck the loup up into your belt behind you. Voila, the cord follows you but stays out of the way. Makes working with extensions much easier.

soaringtractor you said it! I had a young woman who came in to our E.R. with her scalp ripped inside-out from the base of her skull to her upper lip. She looked like she *had been* a very pretty woman before her accident. Many power tools can be over 2HP. Think about 2 horses, pulling your hair with all their might. *NOT* a pretty picture.
@HugoHugunin

+soaringtractor Yep...10 years as a -adrenaline junkie- Trauma Tech tends to make you acutely aware of who the winners and losers are in the battle of flesh vs power tools. It also made me give up riding -crotch rockets- motorcycles and realizing that you are not a motorcyclist...you are an organ donor balancing on 2 wheels. After seeing more than 10,000 dead people in my tenure back then, I have wondered why I don't suffer from PTSD now. :)

When you are ready to do some serious milling again, Put timbers under the sawmill in place of those cinder blocks. Drill a cup to hold each foot, deep enough that it will take a really hard hit from the backhoe to disturb the leveling.
