In the early part of the 90's, I headed to the hills of WV, to build a log cabin, to satisfy a life long dream. Everyone said I wouldn't be able to build it by myself, even my Father had his own doubts. But he came to visit me one day, and thus started this video. Hope you all enjoy it.

I came to watch a log cabin building video, was highly impressed by your get it done attitude. One thing that has stuck with me since I watched it was how impressed your father was. I don't remember the exact words, but he makes one little comment during the video that basically screamed he was proud of you.

That's wild. I did basically the same thing in Deep East Texas. Stayed in one of those pickup camper's while building and would look at log home magazine's at night. My mom and dad thought I was going to die building it at first. But in the end dad was staying out there with me wanting to help. The only thing I paid to have done was the upstairs carpet installed. Hell yes....it was A LOT of work.

Ive been saving trying to make my way to the mountains to do just this. This is so inspiring. What an accomplishment in life, most people will never know or want to know what its like to build that with your own 2 hands. Amazing! Awesome job

I looked up Sugar Grove Road, WV on Google Street View. The house you can see at 12:20 is painted red now, over 20 years later. Ain't technology great?

I've often wondered how the floors are sealed from the elements. I see that this cabin is up on stilts. Does the wood underneath simply get painted, or is there another process for keeping the elements out.

How has the foundation held up over time? Have you run into any rot issues with the pylons embedded in concrete, which is not water tight? Very cool

What kind of wood did you use? Pine. Oak. Poplar or what? Was it better to use soft wood instead of hard? How about chinking, did you buy a mix? I watched the video, I can't remember if you add chinking in this one. Thanks for your help ep

Ummm, is this a parody? Isnt the point of notching to bring the logs as close together as possible to minimize chinking?
@lukeb8045

Some of the cabins built more than a 100 years ago do have large chinking and they look amazing. It does seem though that generally nowadays we strive to minimize chinking. It would have been nice though if there was some video on how to do chinking when the space are so large, what to use and how to apply it to minimize cracking and maximize insulation.
