One of my opening lines I love to use is: "How are you guys, you guys doing good? I don't mean to interrupt you guys.... but..... they actually paid me to interrupt you guys" And what I've found, is when I state the: 'I don't mean to interrupt you guys' People really WANT to be interrupted. Interrupted from boredom, pointless cell phone scrolling, small talk... and they want to be left with something they can all talk about, a memory to connect on, and time spent smiling, in laughter, that leaves their brains questioning and stimulated.

Hey Chris! I just kinda wanted to say thanks, because without you, there is no magic in my life. I got Type 1 Diabetes a while back, and i stumbled upon one of ur vids while was in the hospital, and thats when i first picked up a pack of cards, and thats when i found something that could take me away from all of the shit. so i just wanted to thank you so much.

A good tip with remembering names is to repeat the spectators name throughout the trick, because people like to have other people know their names. A few weeks ago on David Blaine's tour I noticed that David Blaine would repeat the spectators name which creates more suspense, and it is really helpful with remembering names.

Great vid. Adding to that, and this is probably something you touched on in another vid, but really talk to people. This is so important and I see so many young magicians neglecting this. They talk "at" people, but they're not really listening, not absorbing anything. It's prerecorded. Having a real, organic conversation creates flow and can guide the direction your routine takes.

Chris, thanks for this great video. My full time job is as a trainer of teambuilding facilitators (essentially I teach people how to play games that make better humans), and the tips you share in this video are easily transferable to other careers where there is a performance component. I like to, whenever possible, creep in some of my love of magic into my trainings and I can totally see sharing this video with those I teach, much appreciated.

basically just started watching your channel and I absolutely love it. unlike most people, you actually explain how to interact with an audience and that's sooo helpful!
@ikamts27 жыл бұрын
I've been performing magic casually for over 10 years and honestly I stick to a set routine even though I learn many effects. I ALWAYS start with a classic force and do a quick mind reading, but an unconvincing one (if that makes sense). Like a plausible one. It's the best way to establish a connection with a member of the audience that sounds believable. From there on I just do whatever comes to my mind, and it always works way better when the initial connection is established. Then I end with basically a two trick combo. I let the audience know what I do isn't magic, it's skill and I demo a second deal for them or something highly technical. I say this so they understand I'm not trying to sell to them something that isn't real, no BS. HOWEVER I then end with something truly incredible yet clean and simple like stigmata or angle zero. I never use gimmicks

Ok so here is what I was thinking for a starting routine. Hot shot card reveal for picked card; written card prediction from classic force of shuffled deck; 4 phase ambitious card routine; and Jay Sankey's lottery as the closer. I'm currently practicing my ass off to make a first impression in a popular bar really close to my house and hopefully get my first gig. Any tips from magicians who have gigged before on fluidity, banter or pacing would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I was at the pharmacy this week and their network was down, so they couldn't run anybody's insurance...so your options were to pay cash or wait. The staff were obviously stressed, and had been dealing with irate customers all day. I never leave home without at least two TIES, so... When there was a few minutes of downtime for the staff, I asked the pharmacy tech who was running the cash register if she had an extra hair tie (she had three on her wrist), but told her I'd give it right back. She was puzzled, but she didn't have any interest in another argument, so she handed it to me. I took it, looked at it for a second, said "Thanks, here you go" and moved my hands forward to give it back. At the last second, I let go and it just hung there in the air between us. The poor girl was so exhausted thst she almost grabbed it without noticing, but then her eyes got huge and she gave me the biggest smile. I said "There you go...just keep smiling" and went and sat back down to wait. When the network came back up, she did my prescription first and told me that I "made her day." Best feeling ever.

Just an example, a routine I like to do is based on the premise of objects passing through one another, I start out with a bite coin to get spectators attention, then I move onto David Blaines here then there, say I can show them how I did that, then roll into crazy mans hand cuffs with rubber bands I keep on my wrist. Then touch. Then I like to walk away as Dynamo does sometimes. Just an example of a little routine I like to do sometimes, if this helps give you ideas, great.

I have a little routine only 3 tricks but it includes the trick where jacks rob a bank then the run away and lie low but then I do a double lift to reveal a jack then I flip it back over and place the “Jack” in the middle then flip over the top card and its the jack I have the spectator pretend they are the jack and do a trick called the lie detector after that the jack goes to go to find the other jack then I do more of an advanced version of jacks rob a bank.
