The little twig lay on the ground, his heart was broken, left unfound. He'd longed to be a mighty tree, But fallen now, could never be. He wished and wished with all his might And who should pass him by that night But the one who's name is called Bard's Craft? He took the twig, and smiling left. That tiny twig, though small and frail Was perfect for the miniature scale And thus, the small twig smiled with glee, His wish came true... He's now a tree!

Before you painted it with the stone coloring, I thought the fortress looked like it was made out of an ancient tree, with the idea for a younger one sprouting or growing in the middle. Both versions look great!

"I hope my bricks are enough... No, they aren't." -Bard's Craft, and every other crafting DM ever. Usually twice per project. Maybe three times per project. I had an idea while watching this that might be able to save you some time and effort in the future with wood-based projects: Wood-facade foam bricks. 1) Cut foam bricks. Round the corners a little so they can fit together in a circular pattern. Don't bother to texture them. 2) Glue thin sheets of bark, or a mixture of PVA and that chopped bark flocking you use for ground cover to the outward-facing parts of the bricks. 3) Stack the bricks as normal. Cover the seams up with your chopped bark flocking and possibly some patches of "moss." The bricks would be lightweight, use less bark, and fit together seamlessly. They might also form a visible pattern, and ruin the random/natural look you were going for.

To apply the flocking you can use a plastic bottle made out of soft plastic with big lid. Drill the holes accordingly. Pour your flocking into the bottle and when you apply it hold it very close ( about 5 mm) to the surface and press the bottle. By pressing the bottle you will "shoot" the flock and it will be "standing" as if it was growing straight from the ground, and not just laying there.

I found a thicker sawdust (not sifted) can make a great looking moss. Can put it in a cup and mix with desired colors & water then let dry on a cooking pan. Making it with different shades of green then adding in a white sawdust can make it look like little flowers growing in the moss.

There where several stages while building this stronghold where I was like "dude, this looks perfect" The first completely unpainted version already was pure wood elf mastery made from the leftovers of an ancient giant tree! Just add some green flocking and DONE! The next stage where you painted it black was also pretty nasty looking. This reminded me on Obsidian and looked so grim! Could have been something orkish...

You do a great job on texture, shape and scale, but why do you make all natural surfaces look the same - with the same finishes. Study some mountains scenes and notice the variation of rocks and the stones castles and other buildings are made of usually don't have black grout. I've noticed other diorama artists do that too, finish too many objects the same.
