I needed a place to hang my TV and floating media console but don't like seeing wires and cables and didn't want wide-open holes in my wall. The solution: all custom cabling and wiring with dedicated plugs and jacks for everything!

You can save yourself a bit of chaos with speaker wire by using 4-channel speaker wire, which has 4 wires per cable (2 speakers per cable) which are each coloured for easy setup. It also means you run half as many wires in the wall

Since you are using an antenna I would have run the coax up behind tv, so you have the option to just hook into the tv tuner, if you don't want an external tuner box.

not sure it has been said yet, but pro-tip when cutting out drywall: drill a long screw into the approx center of the soon to be cutout and drill it in only long enuff so that u have enuff protrusion to get a pair of pliers or your fingers on it to yank it out as u finish the cut; less garbage inside your walls the better... Otherwise, clean install; like it 👍🏻

Awesome vid. I had trouble finding a low volt 3 or 4 gang as well. I would have used a surge outlet.

Hello! I just bought a house and it came with wall and ceiling speakers. I would like to use the speakers but don't have a single clue where to start to have it operational. Can you please lend me your expertise? Thanks!

If the speakers are already installed, then the wires from those speakers should be coming out in some common place. There will be two individual wires per speaker, typically bundled in one jacket. You then just need an amplifier to power them, then. There are a truly staggering number of options for amps -- do a search for "Multi room speaker amplifiers" for your options. They will depend on how many speakers you have; if you want all speakers to play exactly the same audio or have a per-room difference; what kind of streaming platform you want; budget; and more. I don't personally have experience with them since I am focused on home theater uses and thus drive my speakers with an AVR.

Found this by accident while looking for something else. Well... Now it looks like my job just got more complicated. Edit: Well, I'm running something like this on the opposite wall, and throwing a projector onto the opposite wall, so this should actually be dope.

Great video. Another saying I was told by a friend was "black is brass or it's your ass". That definitely sticks in my mind.

Good point! I was originally going to do a written article about this that had more pictures, but never did, so those photos were never published. I just put them up on imgur, with more close-ups: imgur.com/a/nIH8OIt. Hope that helps!

@@granworks = that is SUPER clean, I totally needed that yesterday, I hit Home Depot and was amazed at them having everything minus the speakers. I'll be taking most of it back, because I wasn't 100% sure on the purpose of setting up the coaxial, HDMI, and Speaker plates exactly. I truly spent 3 hours googling images and your link is 1000% better. Definitely include that into your "Show More" section above. Additionally, you may be able to add that address onto a revised video at the top or bottom of the video. Thanks brother for the link. I'm doing my own DIY Entertainment Center for a 82" TV, receiver, stereo, DVR recorder, 6-8 ceiling speaker, and HD Antennae (It's 2019, I'm breaking up with Cable, she is a HUGE waste of money). Thanks again for hooking me up brother and enjoy your New Years!

Me too, thats how I know how to wire outlets
@ttss5726
@ttss5726 5 жыл бұрын
ifs you handy enough to test the outlet with a volt meter then you shouldn't need to label the wires you pulled use the voltage meter and do a continuity test takes 2 secs to identify the wire then

Great video, but I have to ask...why can you not hide the two speaker wires you have running to the speakers on left and right sides of the media console?
@granworks
@granworks 5 жыл бұрын
Those were just temporary speakers that lacked “banana plugs” and I didn’t want to add them. The wall plate for the speakers will include female banana plug adapter. So... I just let the speakers sit there for now

FYI for Ethernet it's not just punching it down. As per the standard you must not unwind any more than 1/2 inch of cable when punching it down. The cable twist is what given Ethernet its speed.
@granworks
@granworks 5 жыл бұрын
Interesting! The twist in "twisted pair" is definitely for reduced EM interference and I realize that part of the "faster" specs get that speed by twisting the wire even more. But I haven't heard before that the unwinded bit for a punch down can have an effect on the speed. Do you have any links to where I can read up more on this?
