what a tremendous job you have done on the building to this point! you have much to be proud of! I agree that the use of a jig would have been a great time saver but you soldiered right through! I have been laid up after a spinal injury and many surgeries. it has been difficult to find the motivation to begin working on much of anything. You, along with several other KZbin contributors, inspire me to begin to find what is next. I just wanted to say thanks.

Hi there, been watching the channel for a while and remember this video. Reason being is I'm currently at the design stage of making a model based on Leith Central (Condensed to a 6ft by 2ft building footprint). The roof area coming out as 420mm by 9800mm at its base. My question is with my limited experience of brass and the weight it would come out at I'm aiming to build in the plastrut box and I beam. Any recommendation of the spacing of cross membering on something of this size of brass vs plastic. Great channel and enjoying the new layout build.

It is impressive that you did it with such precision and did not use a jig. You also did not had an end stop to judge the cut off point and thus get all parts exactly the same length. For a structure long enough to show slight variations in length of members, you did well. Thank you for the demonstration. Rob
@EverardJunction8 жыл бұрын
+Rob McCrain Thanks Rob. There was certainly a risk without using a jig. It's worked out well though. I've offered it up to the layout and it does fit.

Impressive work! Why have you made the shed that length? Is it a coach shed? I would imagine that it would cover most the the length of your new section? Good luck with it, I hope the sheer length of it doesn't give you issues with bending and warping. I look forward to the next episode. Cheers. Dave
@EverardJunction8 жыл бұрын
+DaveClass47 Hi Dave, yes it is indeed a rather large coach shed. At present I can lift it and stand it on its end, it's very strong so should be ok in the loft. The new section is a coach yard with some DMU storage so the shed was always going to be the big feature of that part of the layout. I'll be busy on this for a while I think, the plasticard alone is going to be quite a challenge! Cheers.
@Cliffjumper248 жыл бұрын
+EverardJunction Something important to do when doing the plasticard.... If you're making a wall around your legs for the lower parts, you'll need that wall to be thick, sandwiching sheets of plasicard. Once of those expert scratchbuilders at a show once told me that this happens because the air trapped between layers heats/cools in variable temperatures (especially somewhere like the loft), expanding it and warping the plastic structure. His way to deal with this is to make a geodetic framework. Imagine you need a wall 10cm x 5cm. You start with the a sheet this size, then create a frame of plastic strips (to make up whatever depth you need your walls to be) around it.... and then inside of that outer frame, you have a zig-zag frame of strip to give it supporting strength. Then you glue on the outer sheet. this is where the important bit comes in..... Top keep it from warping due to the trapped air heating up on a warm day, forcing the plasic to bend..... you drill a pair of small holes (1 or 2mm) in each trangle of the frame..... which allows the air in and out of the structure. The holes can be hidden inside the shed where they can't be seen, or if it's a solid building, positioned in places where it's hard to spot them (like drainage piping, or behind a bit of foliage).
@mrkattm8 жыл бұрын
Looks very good and you are very talented, question... why use brass? Are there not equivalent plastic beams that would have been less expensive and given the same results?
@EverardJunction8 жыл бұрын
+Michael Katt I decided not to use plastic due to the size of the building. At that length a plastic structure would be difficult to handle and wont be very strong.
@baxio3rod7 жыл бұрын
Would it be easier to use a single length of brass for the side pieces rather than fabricate from 14 individual bits?
@davidluckman99368 жыл бұрын
That's an amazing bit of building and the accuracy is impressive to keep a structure that large all in alignment. Had you considered putting in more elements in the roofing that were clear partly to allow natural light in to the coaches and partly to show off the brilliant structure you've created? Even if an all glass roof may not match the building type you're attempting, I wonder if either regular skylights would be in order?
@EverardJunction8 жыл бұрын
+David Luckman I'm going to have a go at making skylights for the roof when I reach that stage.
