I've had a number of requests to do a complete tour of the layout again as many parts of it have changed significantly since the previous tour in 2021. I've done my best to go over just about everything I can think of in detail. I hope this updated tour will bring you up to speed with the current state of the layout.

You have no idea of the sheer joy I feel when one of your newly released videos pop up. And I am not even particularly interested in railway modelling either. I’ve just spent a lovely hour watching this, and am looking forward to whenever you release the next one. Great to see, and great to watch. Thanks for all your efforts, Richard, both with the layout and the videos. You should be very proud of what you achieve.

This layout is a work of art. It is not how we wish the world to be, nor is it how we nostalgically remember the world to be, it is very much how the world actually was. Having lived through this period of the railway I really appriciate the honest and accurate approach. Great tour, great update, and look forward to many more videos!!!

Remember the slam door trains? They were still in service when I moved to London in 2004. You could jump out of the train when it was doing 60mph.

@JosephByrne My Grandad was a Guard on British Rail in the late 70s to the early 80s, he told me that a Drunk man actually did that accidentally while messing around with the door (Except the HST they were on was going alot faster than 60mph)

Absolutely beautiful layout. You've got the track/scenery balance spot on, and the trains look like they're actually going somewhere rather than round and round.

Hi Richard, hope you are well. I lived in London and Swindon from 69 until 94 !. Swindon last 8yrs. As you know, Swindon was Brunell GWR prior. A sleepy town dominated by the railway works that went from 30k to 160k population in the 80s. Have stood on that station and had pricey coffee in the middle of Winter. What a desolate place. You can hear London and Sth. Wales at the same time ⌚!. Your layout is mega lovely jubilee with mates included. Your details of the arse end of places is incredible. [ Enjoy, no rush ?. ] should be on your layout posters. Thanks to you and your mates for this diamond. Dave

Richard, I'm always impressed by how you've not fallen into the trap of the "track has to be everywhere" style of model railways. By being smart and relinquishing and devoting an entire scenic side of the room for your fiddle yard as opposed to the necessary evil of helixes to access under layout storage, you've absolutely nailed it for me. Of course, there's nothing wrong with wanting to fill up every piece of usable space with track, but for me it's so much more realistic with the planning and restraint you've shown and now you have a layout that has the uncluttered look and feel of the real settings you're modelling while still keeping the enjoyment of watching trains run with minimal derailments and other sometimes unavoidable issues. Keep the great content coming mate! Dan.

Cheers Dan, track everywhere is an easy trap to fall into but I'm pleased with how it's turned out. Some wider baseboards would really help but I've only got so much space. Glad you enjoyed it.

I used to drive epbs through the Atlantic lines, down to Stewarts lane and round and down into Victoria. I know those houses in Brixton, drove past them about a million times. Every single detail is absolutely stunning, there are several places where the cable troughing is in poorer states than those displaced covers. When i did my traction exam going down to Basingstoke, there was an occaision when due to squirrels damage the wooden troughing blew up and caught fire, (they had nested in and chewed through cables, set all on fire) we used to say that you knew you were getting closer to London as the grafitti got closer together. You are marvellous.🏆🏆🏆I willingly award you these championship cups.

When I was a teenager (I’m now 55) my favourite part of my layout was turning the layout lights on and the room lights off. I found it so exciting. I even put lights in the carriages but had to use batteries. I think what Richard’s layout does is bring excitement as to the possibilities of what is achievable. Until I saw your videos I had no idea how stunning modelling can be i.e. a work of art and a true representation of a period. Well done , so much appreciated

That was amazing! ❤❤❤❤❤ I grew up in an apartment overlooking an elevated subway line in New York City. I know how those flats and shops around the station must shake and rattle with every passing train. I can feel it in my bones! Two businesses that I never could understand being so close to the tracks were a barbershop and a dentist office. Thankfully, there wasn't a tattoo parlor.

I love this layout not only the sheer scale of it, but early 1990 is when I got my first electric train set and lived in the southeast. You couldn't really all it a 'model railway', but being set in the modern day at the time, it had this sort of rolling stock. Never did get the NWSE stuff to replicate the real thing I travelled on though. I had HSTs and class 58 freight which we don't tend to get in my region.

NOT "hard to appreciate" the attention to detail and the intelligence of your design to maximize the space you are in. Heartily agree with @adelwulf8864 about your track/scenery balance - "spot on" indeed. Don't know if the sound of trains running is enhanced by a sound sytem, but especially in the opening sequence, sounds really realistic, including some "clickety clack". Look forward to every video, which are QUITE well done. (applause). Thank you again for sharing with us.

Absolutely spectacular Richard! I'm sat here enjoying this tour in the realisation that your loft is pretty much the same size as the room I'm sat in - which makes the size of your layout even bigger than I imagined! Your layout's evolution has been amazing and almost matching real-time changes in the real world as developers strive to constantly change our environments and familiar scenes. That is what makes your uploads very enjoyable and believable for the era you base this on.... It might be hard work for you building it, but rest assured it is amazingly relaxing for us, the viewer, to sit back and escape into your miniature world which seems almost devoid of the troubled world we actually live in :) Thank you for keeping going on this, and as always, I look forward to seeing the next progress upload :)

Thanks Richard, that was a lovely way to unwind after a long day! 😃 It is amazing to realise how much you have done, but even more amazing when I started to remember the old bits of the layout, such as the original alignment of the working road along the front of the station when there was no canal, the original scrapyard and canal along with that small building (can’t remember what that was now…was it a gents?) at the water’s edge, and of course the old aborted ideas for the branch line such as the lifted track into the double bridge and the aborted sidings (were they going to be carriage sidings or something? Again I can’t remember! 😀), and each time you have been unhappy you have dived in and redone what you are not happy with, which is brave! It’s not easy to just rip it up and start again, but you seem to even thrive on it at times! 🤣😂 Great stuff mate, I always love when I see you’ve posted a new video 😎👍🍻🍀

There would definitely be a Charcoal Grill burger/done kebab place in the parade of shops under the flats. Also have you considered railings for the end of the Bay platform? It'd definitely have some kind of hoarding there. Love the comparison shots. The early branch pictures look like something from 1985 compared to 1989/90

I think your layout is superb from the perspective of both a modeller and general viewer. I travelled a great deal by train throughout the 80's (mainly Southern region) and your whole 80's vibe resonates with me, you have captured the snapshots in time seen from a passing train brilliantly. The 3 storey houses have always looked so familiar and when you mentioned they were modelled on properties in Brixton I knew why. If the properites you recreated where those backed by the railway viaduct in Coldharbour Lane I lived in one for a short time!.

Thanks for showing us around your layout and explaining everything so succinctly. Your attention to detail, (especially with the era), is inspiring. The large stuff, like the shops etc, is perhaps more obvious than the background bits, like the collection of rusting rail - (Nowadays these have to be removed for safety, or else chained or otherwise bound together, so bits can't be moved onto the track). It all seems very accurate to the late 1980's. Great job well done

Great update as usual, as you say not everyone is a model railway enthusiast so its important that the landscape has lots of interest for non railway modellers. As if to prove that point, some time ago I visited "Minature Wonderland" in Hamburg (I am a model railway enthusiast), but after watching the trains for a little while I became more interested in the lanscape and cameos. I spent over 8 Hours in there that day and the time flew. I visit every year and the same thing happens, I forget to watch the trains.

I have watched this layout build over a long period of time and I am aways impressed my your attention to details and keeping every thing within the time frame that you are modeling. I find working on my layout more enjoyable when I have a train or 2 running on the first board. This also helped me with a radius problem i was having with a B12 loco slowing on the inner track curve at one end of the board. I had laid radius one curves without realizing it. I am using old steel track and nickel sliver track as i am very much on a budget. The raising costs of model railway prices is not helping a lot of people including me and how are the younger generations going to climb the first step into this hobby? Keep up all the good work. This is a great video showcasing so much skill. Watching it reminded me of all the videos you have posted showing all the various sections and now I can see how it all fits together. I agree with you about not feeling pressured to work on the layout. It can't be rushed. My layout is tiny but, none the less, it still needs to be worked on when possible. I like to think of it as waiting for 'The Muse' to visit me and give me inspiration and ideas. Adds to the enjoyment for sure. 😊

I am always in awe of your layout I was staggered by your first one but you can really see how you've improved and show your attention to detail! One suggestion as you strike me as the chap with the skills. Is when you do "night running" do you reckon you could kit a magnarail car with working headlights and taillights? Due to it being dark, can scrap the interior of these cars and could be powered by an onboard battery system or something. Looking forward to all of your next videos!

It's something I'd like to have a go at. Certainly possible, just not had to time to mess about with it yet. Cheers

Love the tour. Absolutely brilliant! You should use the instrumental track of The System's Don't Disturb This Groove for your next video opening. It's set right in that era😎

It must be great, Richard, to look at the layout now to realise that you actually own what is probably one of THE best "layouts at home" in the country. Every time I see this I have to pinch myself to believe some of the videos are not of a real location. I love your attitude to modelling but sadly when you get as old and disabled as me it is more a case of what you are going to finish, not about taking time to do it!! To me the one thing about this layout which I find such a shame is that it can never be taken to shows, so thank goodness for your excellent videos so at least your nearly 90,000 subscribers can enjoy it. Happy modelling! Cheers, Bob.

This is the bench-mark all us modelers strive to attain, great stuff Richard as usual - I regularly go back to your various "how to" videos for inspiration. Chris

Wonderful stuff! I’ve followed your channel since the first layout and it’s been a joy - and a real voyage of discovery. Keep up the good work! That empty restaurant should definitely be a Wimpy, by the way. It’s already the right colour! 😉

Good afternoon. Been following you for some time now, but it is the first time I comment. Congratulations. I've seen the Pilentum Channel, among others, and i have to tell you that your model is at a superior level than many others 10 times the investment worth. Keep it up.

Simply superb! I have not seen Everard Junction for many months and certainly appreciate the great efforts you have made. Over here across the pond my shelf layout will benefit from your instructions. Thanks so much for sharing!

Just wanted to say I appreciate all the work that goes into the layout. I also appreciate all the work that goes into the vids, an hour is a good length if you can do it, especially when they are spaced out I enjoyed this vid even more because it was longer but I could plan my time to be settled and really dedicate myself to watching it. Thank you Richard.
