As soon as I found out about this challenge, I was looking forward to what you would be coming up with. Nobody on KZbin can do more with a simple sheet of plywood! Doing all this without a CNC is all the more impressive.

I bought the plans and perhaps I'm technology challenged too. I have two questions: 1. How do I print the templates FULL size? and 2. What's the layout on a 4 x 8 sheet so that one sheet will yield all pieces? Love your manner of presenting, too!
@shaunboydmadethis5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for buying the plans! There should be an option when printing the PDF versions called "Poster" and that will print the parts on multiple sheets at full size. As for the layout for one sheet, I don't have that in any digital form. When I lay out something like this, I just trace the parts onto the sheet the best I can to maximize what I can get, so parts are kind of all over the place. Hope that helps!
@seandegroote19156 жыл бұрын

Very nice! If you weren't constrained to 1 sheet of plywood for the challenge, would you consider cutting the base in one piece instead of joining them together from multiple segments? Might save a lot of joining, gluing, and clamping time, and it would have a great look, especially with all the grain lining up. Just spitballing a thought.
@shaunboydmadethis6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Dan! Yeah, you could definitely do it in one big piece, which would have a nice look. I think beyond the constraints of the challenge, doing it that way would just end up with a lot of waste. Which if you were clever, you could find a use for, but doing it in pieces definitely gives you the most efficient use of material.

Really like this piece, can I suggest maybe a video talking about the thought and design process you go through to create these curves? I would love to re-create this for myself but I am little stumped thinking about the shape of that seat and then the angles of putting it all together. Do you design these out in Sketchup or Fusion first? Even then you need to have great visualization skills.
@shaunboydmadethis6 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Wayne! I have definitely been thinking about doing a video(s) on my design process. I don't use Sketchup or Fusion, just paper and pencil, then a full-size drawing on MDF. I touched on that a little bit in my template video from a few days ago, but could definitely go more in-depth about it.

Question: Can I make the templates with a can of Quaker Oats? I feel the Irish oats can was a strategic choice. Also there was a missed opportunity for a rockin catchphrase.
@shaunboydmadethis6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Irish Oats are SBMT proprietary technology. No guarantees on Quaker. And believe me, I badly wanted to throw in a rockin' catchphrase, but I am trying to keep those for the tips videos. Maybe I should have broken that rule.

Boy, such a nice and seemingly simple construct, that's so subtle at the same time! Did you work out the angles by math or by eye (I would consider both to be real achievements)? Is the rocking action to your liking or would you use a smaller curvature next time? I definitely hope you win prizes and fame!!
@shaunboydmadethis6 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Almost everything was done by eye on the legs and the seat. The only thing I calculated was the angle on the cross pieces to make sure the legs angled back properly. The rocking action is pretty nice, too. I might try tweaking a few things if I try it again, but for a first shot, I am really happy with how it came out!

Nice design. If this wasn't a 1 sheet challenge would you make the "rockers" from one piece instead of joining them?
@shaunboydmadethis6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Branden! You definitely could make them as one piece. I would probably still do it in multiple pieces as it reduces material waste, and allows the option to use solid wood if I ever wanted to.
@247816 жыл бұрын
Really great design and build. Absolutely love it. Question: If using more than 1 sheet could you make the rockers/legs solid/one piece instead of segmented? Thanks, and you win imo.
@shaunboydmadethis6 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Really appreciate it! You definitely could make the entire leg portion as one piece if there was no limit on material. I probably still wouldn't just to minimize waste, as the center portion of each rocker couldn't really be used for anything on this piece.

Now that is a cool chair! Very nice design, all from 1 sheet of plywood. How long does it take you to come up with the dimensions for each piece? Do you figure it out on paper or use some kind of software?
@shaunboydmadethis6 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Jay! I usually spend a few hours figuring out dimensions and proportions. It always starts as a sketch on paper, then I just start drawing full-size on a piece of MDF until it looks right.
