Modern retro is so damned cool. Esthetic yesteryear combined with modern technology offers a unique perspective, be it a retro lamp with L.E.D's in the living room or a refurbished 80s car without the wiring/ignition problems. It can be applied to virtually anything from the past, the only limitation being imagination. Great video yet again, presented by the quintessential geek of mtb.

Ahhh Doddy, you know how to get an old blokes heart racing. That was just sublime. I can't put into words how cool that whole experience (experienced through you!) was. For an older bloke, the old stuff is an exquisite memory, if not experienced, than definitely longed for. The new stuff... well, that is a whole new kettle of fish. The future is now, so let's jump onboard!

I really hope Doddy does a proper review of how good manitou feels compared to the off the shelf RS/Fox gear we get rammed down our throats. Back in 1991 at the Moab Fat Tire Festival, Doug Bradbury of Manitou let me have a go on his original full-suspension bike with the elastomer forks at both ends. Doug had me ride the bike straight on into a high curb; and, to my amazement it easily handled the challenge. My first after-market suspension fork ended up being a Manitou.

First off, hands down one of the coolest builds ever on KZbin! Second, I too was one of those obsessed kids in the 90’s cutting out magazine photos and putting them up on my bedroom wall. Now I’m in my 40’s and have had the privilege of building up some of those old mtbs I could never afford as a kid and after a few retro bikes I have no interest in riding them. I’ve always been an adopter of the new tech and geometry. But again, what an amazing build. Well done.

This is an absolutely stunning looking bike! I only have only seen one of those original Manitou FS bikes in my life back in the mid 90's. I myself was riding a '93 GT RTS 2 / a Noleen coil shock and a Rockshox Mag21 up front back then. The tech nowadays is just amazing compared to the old days. I was actually still riding a '98 Barracuda XC URT up until 2018 that had a '98 Manitou XC tpc fork. It made the GMBN rewind segment 4+, yrs ago, but my newer plus hardtail is more capable.

That is an absolute stunner of a bike Doddy, the Manitou FS was my absolute dream bike back in the day (apart from maybe the GT Xizang). My first pair of suspension forks were Manitou sports and I loved them to bits. I am torn though, I think the spec fits the whole modern retro theme perfectly, but as somewhat of an alternative build I'd have liked to see a different groupset, something from TRP maybe. I think my first mountain bike was running suntour, so something non shimano or sram would have been the cherry on the top. Perhaps an ingrid components derailleur as a nod to the paul components stuff. Other than that, when is it being given away as a competition prize?????

That's gorgeous and unique, well done. I've always had a love of cars until more recently where you no longer can work on your own project because technology has gone too far leaving you in the hands of the dealers, it's nice to see you can build something you're proud of and it's a bit of you in the build and your inspiration showing through. I need to get fit again as i've let myself go as i've got older 58 with 40" waist and bad legs that take ages to heal if grazed. The last time out on my mountain bike last year, had an asthma attack and ventolin didn't help much and ended up calling to be picked up...the shame! I've always kept my asthma under control but was shocked how i'd let myself go and felt reluctant to ride since then. I with there'd been better bikes when I was young, I don't think I'd ever have stopped riding but all my bike bent and buckled on anything off road back then.
@roonietunes72 жыл бұрын
i'm 54, lost some weight recently and it's helped my asthma a lot-not sure if it's clearer airways or better conditioning since i was dieting and exercising both. the nice thing about these lovely modern bikes for us older guys is that we can get out and ride in much more comfort and safety now-they're made for us! lots of little changes to my habits and patience really helped in my case. hang in there and give yourself a pat on the back every time you make a positive decision!

What an incredible build Doddy. That exact retro Manitou bike was also a dream bike for me - that and matching chrome GT BMX bike of the time. I had posters and cutouts everywhere. I think a cool set of cranks that would have matched the looks of old cranks back in the day is Middeburn. Lets be honest, back in the day they had no brakes and no suspension either - it would take the edge off but they weren't the safest (or easiest to ride).

Building a one off custom bike is a must. I built my first one in 2002 ( based on a saracen dual slalom frame), that thing ended up being so silent and compliant/comfortable. Sold for £600 in 2009, which got me started on my next build, an S-works full squish. Which was an absolute work of art, swapped for an audi s4 in 2011. I recently built a commuter all matt khaki and oil slick. Its so addictive, I'm always thinking of what my next build will be! ❤

Yo, Doddy! No hate to YT for the Capra, but the Manitou back in the day was a bike that was handbuilt in the USA and, yes, they were cracking quite a lot. I know this had to be done pretty quick, but I think an alloy bike, like a Nicolai or a Geometron would\ve been more in the spirit of the Manitou, maybe even a Canfield. Otherwise, very good job on everything else. I would've also reached out to Jürgen Beneke, if I was you. He's riding cyclocross these days and is a very approachable individual and a very nice person. He was also one of my heroes back in the day and I was pleasantly surprised to be able to connect to him. Cheers!
