Looks Great! And informative, well done. Question regarding your interior concentrated load point: Did you taper the footing edges? So that your not going straight from a 20" deep footing to a 4" slab with a 90 degree angle and possible cracking at this intersection? Tapering the concentrated footing so that the footing meets the slab at at a 45 degree angle, thus having less of a hard angle? Similar to typical perimeter foundation details?
@HeirloomBuilders Жыл бұрын
Yes, good point: when we dig out the gravel for the thickened footers, the gravel won’t hold up vertical; it will repose to a 60 degree-ish angle.

Do you have a video of how you are doing the post bases? Wet set or anchor bolts? I’m doing a post and beam cabin soon and I’m wondering if I *need* to go the Perma-Column route which requires 18” thick concrete
@HeirloomBuilders Жыл бұрын
I don’t have a video on the post bases yet. But we prefer to drill and epoxy into the finished concrete slab in this case (so we can get the locations dialed in exactly and not have to finish the concrete slab around a bunch of wet set post bases.

I know the struggle - maybe try using a mic w a wind screen or a deadcat on it. If you’re filming on your iPhone you can get a plug in lav mic and throw a windscreen on it. I’d say for this type of content (informational/educational) skip the music all together if you can’t control volume - the most important piece is the information. Just some ideas. Learning about foundations and I’ve been watching tons of videos, this is one of the best looking (neatest/tidiest/most prepped) layouts ive seen. Good luck!

how do you deal with the issue of frost heave in a mono pour?
@HeirloomBuilders2 жыл бұрын
Just dig the perimeter turn-down footing deep enough to be below the frost line. Everything in between will be insulated and protected by the gravel base (which shouldn’t hold water if you have a foundation drain around the perimeter)

You're so lucky the county let you use welded wire and only 6" footing. Here in CA the min footing is 24" deep, 12" wide, #4 rebar everything and its a pain in sandy area. What state are you in???
@HeirloomBuilders4 жыл бұрын
We are in NC. The footing only needs to be 12” below final grade and 12” wide for a monolithic slab. We don’t have the seismic concerns and all the hold downs like you have in CA. I built in Truckee/Donner Summit for about 7 years, and had to deal with all the seismic and 300 psf snow loads. NC much easier!

Does the weight the concrete exerts on all the steel, as it is being poured causing the steel to settle, eventually cause the edges of the steel or the steel seats to puncture the vapor barrier? Is the vapor barrier puncture proof, and if so, is there a rating the defines that?
@HeirloomBuilders4 жыл бұрын
Good questions. As we place the concrete, we pick up the steel reinforcement mesh so that it's embedded approximately 1" from the surface. We use 10mil or heavier plastic as a vapor barrier so that there are minimal punctures as a result of walking on the mesh. Thin plastic (6mil and less) will puncture easily and should be avoided. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mH62mIyVpMeenLc

What is the cost difference between a slab foundation compared to a block basement foundation? Thanks
@HeirloomBuilders4 жыл бұрын
A slab foundation will be cheaper. But the actual cost will depend on your site. If you have a steep build site, it will make more sense to dig out for a basement. Slabs are most suited for flat building sites.

Ok… how do you fix a basement that’s monolithic and has a leak? I got a quote for 16K to fix it and add drains…. Our walls are bucking too… what do you recommend? I’m having a second person come out from a different company to give me another take. I did not want to go with 16k right away. I like to compare prices and how jobs are done.
@HeirloomBuilders2 жыл бұрын
French drain and waterproofing. It could easily cost 16k depending on how deep they have to dig, what’s in the way of digging, and how far they’ll have to trench the drain to daylight.

How can you tell when a you have a monolothic slab in a house? Are there specific signs?
@HeirloomBuilders4 жыл бұрын
Most slabs that are built on grade (at ground level) are monolithic. If it’s more than one concrete pour, there will be a visible joint between the two placements/pours. Sometimes that joint is visible 3” below your siding, sometimes it’s buried underneath the exterior wall, sometimes it’s visible at the door opening. Why do you ask?
@chirina53 жыл бұрын
@@HeirloomBuilders sorry I forgot to respond. So my house is a bit weird I have a house that has a basement space/garage. So the entrance to the basement from the outside is through the garage. But the foundation is built a bit weird the foundation in the front is block about 4 ft high. The soil in the outside of the front is about 3 ft high but the foundation walls on the back is like not even a ft high and that's where everything is kinda flat so there's no soil build up against that foundation wall. And the reason why I'm asking is my basement is leaking bad it seems to be coming from underneath the slab trough some holes that seem to be where old carpet was attached. I also see what appears to be to saw cuts in the middle of one room and that's where water seems to be seeping through it looks like control joints that they do on slabs.
@HeirloomBuilders3 жыл бұрын
@@chirina5 not much out can do about that except for adding a French drain around the house if there’s not one there and waterproofing the basement walls. Seems like the vapor barrier under the slab was not installed well and may be letting water pass through

@HeirloomBuilders3 жыл бұрын
Yes, a monolithic slab is good for most homes, just need to size the with the of the turn-down footing to accommodate the soil bearing capacity. A 12” wide footing is plenty for soils that can bear 2000psf

Man I hate to see tutorials given when the people giving them have no clue on the process that they are trying to explain, plastic uses as expansion material, really, not reinforcement around the penetration's through the slab, other than the WWF for the slab. and the thickness of the plastic vapor barrier is irreverent, some specifications call for a minimum of 6 mil but really consider why you really need one. check your building codes.
