I was lucky enough to be taught how to do layout with batter boards and string line when I was first in the biz 30 years ago. Set batter boards 5 ft outside of building lines. Buildings are always right on with square. It's amazing how many builders don't know how to do it this way.

Very timely find for me. I just picked up a 70 x 30 shelter kit from an auction yesterday (12/29/2022), and I would like to mount the support posts on Sonotubes. This is a gold mine of information!! On a previous project me and my younger brother were to put up a lean-to shade area next to our barn and in our attempts to make the square posts straight and equidistant all around was almost impossible and we barely managed to make it square... B U T! After watching this video and going step by step we have flawlessly thrown up 8 posts for another shade project and it’s such a relief to have this kind of video for help. You definitely deserve a Nobel prize for this masterpiece of a video

I remember back in 89 going over this with the head of our survey department at Burgess and Niple as a new hire. I think we did 4 or 5 practice layouts before going out to a job site. He didn't want anyone using the laser layout system who couldn't do a manual layout. Batteries on that old equipment would always die when you needed it the most. Those ni-cad bricks weighed a ton when you had to make sure you had enough power for a full day. Great video

I do it a little differently but basically the same. We chalk lines right on the ground, but your right that if there's slope, the measurements will be off. But I do foundations, not post frame, and the dig is flat. You only really need to measure one diagnal, and then it's just lengths of walls after that. There's no doubting the accuracy here though, your money! Nice clear instruction Kyle!
@psidvicious4 жыл бұрын
One diagonal SHOULD, theoretically be enough but it’s always good practice to double and even triple check. It’ll save you some day, guaranteed.
@cliftonobrien5884 жыл бұрын
@@psidvicious Math never lies. I'm not discounting double checking. On more complication building sites, you have to pick just 2 lines to square. Always pick the largest portion of the building, and then everything else gets measured off of that.
@psidvicious4 жыл бұрын
@@cliftonobrien588 We’re in complete and total agreement. Control lines. An ‘X’ and ‘Y’ axis that everything is dimensioned off of is SO important. ‘Leap-frogging’ dimensions one off of the next, to the next, to the next is really bad practice and can get accumulated error. Bring EVERYTHING off of the controls. Preferably ‘center-lines’, so that errors can be reduced by half right away.

Quick story about steel tapes. Was building an athletic track for a High School and the survey that was provided was very minimal. Had to pull 100ft tapes often. After we set our forms for drain system we had to get a survey check before pouring. Turns out the shrinkage and expansion of a steel tape with 20 degrees Celsius (68F) of variance is enough to fail you when the tolerances is 2cm (¾ inch). Great vid btw

When I built my home (15 years ago), I became so frustrated with batter boards that I layed out the longest wall using a string level. I then layed out the adjoining walls using a hand fashioned 6/8/10 triangle. Sheer determination and faith in God were the only reasons it worked - but in the end it came out 1/2 inch off level and 3/4 inch off square across a 24x40 diagonal. After wasting almost 100 linear feet of 2x10, I also gave up on laying out stair stringers. I finally installed a second hand set of fiberglass FEMA steps at my entry door. Glad somebody understands all that math!

We don’t subtract the 3 inches for the wall lath, just put 1 1/2 marks on the level. That way you are not planting column against the string or wind blowing the line against the columns. Another thing we do is tie a loop that doesn’t move mark the string 8ft o/c. Take it down to drill footers. Put the string up on the same loop, plant the columns

Years back some of the trade called those "Blue Boards" however, they were 2x4's set at 90 degree's from one another and were set some distance from the actual building footing. The main concern too is to set the foundation square/parallel to the lot lines.
@psidvicious4 жыл бұрын
I never heard them called blue boards, but I did always set up batter boards in a 90° corner ~5’ or so, off the actual building corner (or however much was necessary to keep them out of the way). I do kinda like the technique of using the single board on a ~45° angle to catch both corners though. As long as it’s not going to be in the way.
