Tig - tungsten inert gas welding gtaw. From what I could see he uses the same TIG welding method for tacking as well as welding. TIG is a very detailed process. SUMMARY, shared similar traits with soldering. Filler metal rod in one hand torch in the other. Uses varying electrodes/filler metal rods based on material to be welded. Much better heat control and precision welds. Welds chromoly stainless aluminum mild steel and most all others. Simply research electrode and shielding gas requirements for material as well as base settings (reference only, adjust accordingly) for your specific welding machine and style. Filling the vessel with shielding gas has many advantages worth research.

My daily job is to build Prototyp main and rear frames with the exact same steel. Most of the time I use my mag/mig welder with a G6 wire and C18 as my shielding gas. Im guessing frames are made out of steel. Are their frames made out of aluminum? Or is that just bicycles that are made out of aluminum? How thick does the steel/aluminum need to be for a motorcycle and how thick are bicycles? Reason I ask is I wanted to convert a bicycle to a moped by adding a motor to it like many are doing now.. but I ran into a guy who said the bike frames are not strong enough to handle vibrations and he had to reinforce his frame. So Im trying to figure out how much it would cost me to buy the steel/aluminum to have a frame built or for me to try to build. I want to make one of those Micargi Vancouver streatch cruiser bicycle frames.
@110WeldnSteelworx2 жыл бұрын
Frames are made of many different materials. Mountain bikes nowadays mostly aluminum. My old school GT tour 2 bicycle -chromoly. 1912 bianchi 1 cylinder bicycle - mild steel. The material choice and associated strengths / weaknesses are calculated and determined mostly on the requirements of the bicycle. Is weight going to be a factor? Will the bike go 10 or 100 mph / KPH? The more work (usage/abuse) you ask of the item (bicycle) , the more you will have to consider material to be used and then gauge or thickness of the material Plus any other known / unknown factors. A show bike that isn't going to be on the streets or off-road speaks for itself when it comes to materials needed. A trail bicycle will be built OEM strong and have associated reinforcements where necessary as well as a visibley expressed weight limit/ Max load..... Are you the only rider, is it just a metro cruiser, do you have rough terrain, passengers, is it for long distance or short springs etc.. you feel me so far ? .....Feel free to correct me or educate me if needed..... Years ago most mild steel tubing had a seam in it and still does to this day as well as other materials used for tubing or pipe. You can see this seem and feel it on the inside of the material. Yes there is also a difference between tubing and pipe do your research diligently. Most motorcycles in my generation used what's called d o m (drawn over mandrel) or mechanical steel tubing.. Mainly it's seamless... thus better attributes. Alloys like chromoly have their own attributes do your research again. You might find a titanium application if you look hard enough. No matter what flavor of the material honestly thicker walls heavier duty pieces Overkill is the way to go rather than risk it. Gussets AKA little triangles and such at the corners and joints as well as using solid material inserts or external cases are prime methods to reinforce weak intersections and points. You could create exoskeletons if you thought you needed them. Seemed tubes will work if you reinforce and brace your weak points and or double down on Wall thickness or material thickness. Don't put your seam in a position for shearing splitting torsional stress etc. You might possibly ask your local Fab shop / steel supplier if they have a recommendation for material. They will teach you a little about wall thickness and or schedules. Anybody can mig weld some old frames together and make it work with a motor and controls, and it's a fun way to learn a lot. Perhaps not safely though and definitely definitely not going to be at the level of the master above. Summary -plan, work, replan ,rework, finalize and detail. decide how dedicated you want to be!!! Decide the general requirements of the bicycle, use that to determine the material you would like to use, the material will help you determine the welding method, then if possible CAD or graph paper& pencil to create approximate scale drawings of the frame from as many perspectives as you want(this *may* help with angle starting points such as rake). Highly recommend building or buying a solid frame jig. Create and use Sturdy construction paper cut outs and or templates before using real material when possible.Create a cut list parts list and order of operations.

I have found in my little experience that the creation will tell me how it wants to go together. Some things just don't work as planned or plans change or ideas shift so keep your mind open be receptive to the idea that this creation may have a plan of its own.
