Building a New Kitchen Part 2: New Bay Window

This is the second video in a series showing how I rebuilt my kitchen from scratch. I started on actual construction by removing the old bay window and replacing it with a much better and new window. A bunch of framing work had to be done to make room and properly support the new window. Enjoy!

This is a valuable addition to my woodwork collection kzbin.infoUgkxbnOKZBE4evMO5V2vroHeCjq6d_MV6wJO I still will rate this woodwork plan as the best in my reference library. It always seem to stand out from the rest whenever you go through the library. This is a masterpiece.

It wouldn't pass an inspection with those notches - should have doubled the studs up and then you can drill a hole no more than 60 percent of the stud size through the center.
@rtkevans
@rtkevans 4 жыл бұрын
Some older homes from the 60s and 70s used 2x4 framing for exterior walls. The builders still drilled holes for ABS piping, which amounts to much more than 60%. When renovating these types of situations, Simpson offers a great product called a steel stud shoe that reinforces the stud in the case to much "meat" has been drilled out.

This is true. The notches have compromised the structural integrity of the support.

Nah, not joking, just started watching your channel. I had an uncle in England that was an electrician, but learned how to build his own furniture and a lot more, transformed his entire house all without help, even brought in central heating early back into the 70’s. Sorry if I offended you meant no harm honestly. Wish I was as daring!!!!

I'm not saying you did it right man but at least you did it. I started off slow and did not know all the code for everything but I learned on the way and then as I went I started following the code for what I was doing a lot closer. You have to start somewhere and you learn from your mistakes. Most of the people commenting on this vid don't know all the code either. Some of the stuff they are saying is very true and now you know but always get the books online or physical so you can look up stuff!

I've watch the video of your living room wall removal project too. The number of MAJOR building code violations you are making is amazing. These aren't that minor kind either (opps I nailed my post together ever 16" instead of the required 12"). 2-2x6 over a 5" window with a single 2x4 turned sideways,? Really!? That's probably the craziest renovation mistake I've ever seen. I feel bad for the person that buys that house from you one day.

You could easily move that vent piping behind kitchen cabinetry over drywall to left to pass king stud then dive it into wall. King studs are not allowed to be notched. Instead you compromised strength of king stud on the left as you notched out half of it at two points. Terrible move from structural strength perspective.

You are not allowed to have right-angle bends in your vent pipe!!!!! Aside from that, I agree with the others, it's a matter of time before your bay window pops out into the front yard and the wall caves. Now that the reno is "done", if I were you I would remove siding from the outside and correct all these issues. Don't cut notches, but rather drill holes in the studs for your piping and reinforce with simpson stud shoes. If your city ever sees this video, your property could be red-tagged.

I think a lot of contractors watch amateur videos longing for the moment when you can say, "You're not doing it right!" Ok then I'll get a nonexistent contractor out here to do the job never when they show up after 2 years.

I see that there's a crawl space. Would it have been possible to re route the drain and vent from underneath? Notching the kings, jacks, and cripples is problematic. Is there a gasket sealing system for the new bay window?

I don't know the code in your area but any notch in a load bearing wall may not exceed 25 percent of the stud. So 2x4 or even a 2x6 wall 3 inch drain line? It's pretty dangerous to let that hold up the roof I suppose if you're single it's fine but if your kids live in there it would probably keep me up at night. At least in California.

Hey Ben, new to your channel. Your kitchen looked a lot like mine. I just bought a home and im being quoted 30-40k to do a build out. Few questions 1) Did you have to get any permits to do this work or did you just do it? 2) I'm not that confident in my own abilities to do all this work, especially electrical, piping and gas etc. Did you get any help from other people when doing this? 3) Any resources you could provide or tips?

You need permits is you are knocking down load bearing walls, adding in new windows or modifying the structure and a few other things, I would say he doesn’t need one because he technically didn’t do any of those things, he merely remodeled an already existing window. Again, it would depend on your local code.

Even worse after he botched one project, he did not listen to his comments that he has alot more to learn and continued to botch anpther project.
