Maybe next time you drill the holes for the trim tab rivets you could drill the first one and then use that first rivet to hold the whole unit in place thus giving you a guide to drill through (and hopefully prevent any drill slippage)?

Hi Nick, you might want to consider clamping the elevators to a straight edge across the aircraft, that is you are clamping them to each other (swing the rudder to one side) prior to drilling that new elevator leading edge tube. If you don’t mind me saying I don’t think the digital protractor will be accurate enough…

Thanks Michael! It has all been signed off now so I got it right second time around! Good advice though!

Maybe leave the drilling to Barney next time? Kidding! Very interested to see how it's all coming together.

Heya Pal, looking great as always. a tip when it comes to drilling holes on uneven surfaces is to push hard and manually turn the drill to create a spot. This will prevent the drill bit from wondering as it did. Hope this advise helps :D

Centre punch might have helped with the drilling bit just to give you a start - (blimming backseat builders!) I suppose they may prohibit this as it might distort the tube. Looks like it's coming together nicely. 👍

That is good advice! It doesn't say you can or cannot in the manual but I can see arguments for both. I reckon some sort of home made jig might be a happy compromise.

FYI, when trying to find a hole to melt through the fabric, I found using a flashlight helps to locate the predrilled holes in the tubing.

Wondering how you got the big hole in the elevator fabric repaired.....after you riveted the trim tab on....I was surprised to see you rivet it on?

Get rid of that big battery drill. Get yourself a small pneumatic one. It will give you better control and will be a lot lighter to handle.

As I worked as an aircraft engineer and built a number of aircraft. A good tradesman does not blame his tools because he has the sense to purchase the right tool in the first place. Get an air drill that has good fine control. Atlas copco, are the aircraft engineers preferred brand.
