You need a "Fish Tale" on the tip of the auger , it guides the bit into the hole . You might try a choker between the forks about 2/3 way up the pole , drop it straight down into the hole . In Flagstaff , Northern AZ , the "rocks" are usually about the size of the tires on the tractor , You've got GOOD soil(clay) , here , if there's any moisture , the clay sticks in the bucket , and you've got to bang it out on one of those "tire sized" rocks . Really enjoy your videos , I retired from construction about 10yrs ago and do miss it .

I'm from central Texas . I'm a bit jealous of how easy it is for you to dig those holes. If I tried to sink in that pole barn, i'd have gone through 5 sheer pins, and spent 3 or 4 hours with a rock bar and a LOT of cussing. :-D

Chris, you should use a wrecking bar to tamp that dirt/gravel down around each pole, not a shovel handle. Wrecking bar has a lot of weight behind it and will compact the material a lot tighter.

Thanks for the video. I put poles by using a 8" length of rope, make a noose around the pole about 2/3rds of the way up, attach other end with 2-3' of slack to the front end loader. That way you can place the pole in while it's off the ground and not drag a bunch of dirt in. You can find the sweet spot and hold it close to perp. Use a 6' stick with a nail in the end to slacken off the noose when your done. Cheers, Billy in Canada

I hired a motor driven auger some years ago. It had handles for two people, but I thought I'd manage by myself. It went down less than a foot, hit rock, and threw me half way across my garden. I took it back to the hire shop, an bought a big crowbar and a post hole digger. It was no harder, and a site less dangerous. My neighbour told me later that my property was built over a stream bed, and the ground was full of rocks.

Yes but you have to have the beer and meat other wise it's just a bunch of sober assholes cussing and yelling then asking for nails cuase they all got pissed and ended up dropping them because they where pissed which made it worse but then if you do have beer you'd end up with a lop sided barn because one is focused on the grill the other is handing up boards and nails and also cutting the boards which most likely will come out just alittle crocked

Reminds me of a time when buddy asked me to come over and help him get a phone pole in the ground after a storm knocked the old one down. We fought that sucker for hours finally putting one end on a scaffolding he had and weaseling it into the hole.

West Texas has some hard ground, I have a Pengo rock bit on my auger it eats through the stuff we have out here like it sand. used to do the drill and soak method until I found the pengo addon

The way to stop the auger walking around in the hard pan at the surface is to weld a 1' spike on the end to spear the ground and guide it in. Just like on a wood spade bit. I had a manual auger and it did the damned same until I put a spike on. Just a thought, hope it helps. Best. Andrew

You got some rocky clay there. Here in west TX I put my auger on the soil it go straight down with no veer, side to side. That pole barn construction will need some chipping bar work to get back on track.

Usually with your three point hitch mounted auger they will have an arm that reaches back to the operator to control the direction of the auger whether you have a barkston cab or not. Besides that keep on digging! 👍🤟

Not all of them most of them are supposed to be 2 man one on the tractor one guiding it and if your tractor doesn't have down pressure like alot of older tractors use a rock bar or a tamp bar (same thing lol) to guide it and hold it down

You showed the project from the homeowner with some acreage perspective. Using the equipment most people would/ might have or rent. Unless a person is loaded , in the business, or in debt up to their necks; they probably won't have more than one tractor with all the latest high tech attachments.You showed what a pain in the ass post hole diggers can be. I fixed my POS auger that I fought for years. I went to Bobcat and got a new Auger. It has replaceable tip and cutters for different kinds of conditions. The rest of the digger was fine just the auger was made for sand. I was surprised the Bobcat auger wasnt that much money. Had ti build an adapter to fit the machine but that wasnt difficult.

I have one of thse "man killers" too. It is easier with two people .Helps you line up the hole. Mine has a longer auger point to help it get started. The big augers always tend to skip around a bit but the longer spike helps. Heck it is so dry here in Ga. I don't know if you could dig a hole at all.....

Hi Chris, The 3PL post hole bores are limited in what they can do. Without downward force or bolting on a couple of hundred pounds of weights, they are useless on hard ground. I was expecting to see an excavator with a boring head.

A - You have several excavators. Why the auger?? B - You have a skid loader with front hydraulics - Hydraulic auger on the forks works much quicker, accurately and safer C - Last resort: Put the hydraulic auger on forks on tractor. A PTO auger is the most difficult, inefficient and dangerous method.

Technical Items oh boy. First thing is this isn’t for machines or equipment. It’s for cattle so I get what he’s doing. I build for shops and pole barns for equipment. Batter boards are for string lines to square up your post hole locations and posts once they are in. Posts would be square not round6X6 pressure treated like Chris said he wanted to use for the one but didn’t have it. Rat wall would be 2X6 pressure treated tougn and grove at the desired grade level for concrete or one board higher than grade so you can screw the steel or whatever you r enclosing it in at the bottom. As 2X4 every 24” on center (I.e. Perlins). For screwing siding steel on. LVL r structural grade beams. For this 2x8 or2x10 lvl material would be suitable. One running long way of the building on inside and outside of each three posts at the top. That’s for starters. GRK are screws that r the bees 🐝 neez for stuff like this. Again. This is a animal lean2. Not what I’m talking about. Hope this helps.

We use to but it rusted the shit out of it so not any more....we set 2 post and cut one of them shorter than the other put them in a straight line tie the auger to the tall post and set to mount for the 3 point on the shorter post which holds it off the ground making it use able for a quick hitch but it is a hell of alot easier

Typical Auger put it dead on the spot and it moves. Get it off the spot and it goes straight in.

Make a small hole first with a spade as a guide hole and slow your RPM down to start with. Also I take my auger to bits when I take it of the tractor it’s only 2 extra pins and the bolt for the auger .

I guess Chris is at home and do his own thing, and some people do a whole lot worse. One of my favourites was the retired dentist who has since become president of the Menz Shed I belong to. He came over all Kiwi once, and was wandering around the workshop in bare feet. I kid you not. This was the wood shop, so not as bad as the metal shop, but the floor was still a hazard zone to bare flesh. Having told my wee tale, I'm inclined to agree with you.
