These sinkholes can be bastards of things, over 12 yrs. ago the tractor I was driving decided it should loose traction (4 wheels in forward motion tractor not!) stopped when one rear wheel found the previously unknown hole that had opened up, we were now rolling down a steep gully, I parted company via the now broken rear window and tossed several metres and that was the last time I stood on my own 2 feet with out mechanical assistance, I'm now a C7 Tetraplegic but I'm alive and leading the good life greatly assisted by my wonderful Wife of over 40 years.

Graham, that is quite a story, and a reminder that things can go south on you in a heartbeat, and with serious consequences. I fell four metres from the top of a big hedge 10 years ago, and broke T6 and three ribs. Unfortunately, the local ED did not take it seriously (possibly because I drove myself there) so I carried on working despite the pain. Three weeks later and several trips back because it was hurting more than it should, I got a CT scan and the breaks were plain as day. Unfortunately, in the time I'd been working through the pain fibrous growth in the break and it will now never heal. When I visited the spinal unit, there were a lot of people in your situation, so while I will take strong pain killers for the rest of my life, I am still walking. Thanks for sharing your story. It would nice to think it will make a few people stop and think, but probably not.

Mr. Peters, in hindsight do you think you would have fared better if you had stayed in the tractor?
@grahampeters66095 жыл бұрын
@@Channel4029 Hi Larry If I was lap belted as tractors are equipped, I would not now be replying to your comment as the tractor continued to roll after I departed via the rear window for approx. 100 metres and with my head being bashed off the cab windows and pillars my scull would have ended up as a broken mashed up pulp. Thanks for your comment, I am now a well adjusted tetraplegic who leads a good lifestyle, I drive a lowered floor Kia Carnival (sedona) which has now traveled over 100 thousand Km.and I mow my lawns from a modified Countax lawn tractor and are well cared for by my loving wife, she is currently having a break in Boston Ma. In 2000 I sat in a court room watching a civil trial between a golf course and a municipal water/sewer utility. The golf course was in a valley and had a sewer pipe go under ground over one hill under the course then back over the other side. The pipe was made of concrete and steel. Over the period of 5 years the pipe ruptured 3 times. Filling the course with sewage and spoiling the pond. Turned out what cause the pipe failure was a pump was sucking air and allowed small air bubbles enter the pipe. These bubbles reacted with the sewage and concrete to create an acid that cut through the concrete and steel causing the failure. It was a pretty interesting case and how one unknown could baffle engineers for years.

The pipe is corroded right at the water line of the standing water. where salt in the water from deicing the plant lot collected. Where you have water, salt, metal and oxygen you have corrosion. Lets hope the next engineer is a little smarter than the last one. And uses concrete or twin walled. pipe, incrases the fall and builds an outlet that will not collect soil and grow vegetation.

Well this would be just a guess but judging by the size of the original project it was huge. The company that installed it 30 or 40 years ago probably bought the cheapest pipe they could find. It may have been galvanized but the quality of it and thickness of it obviously was sub par. My guess is the Developer went with the lowest bidding excavation. Company. And this is what you get. An inexperienced contractor who bid the job way to tight and had to cut coners anywhere they could to not go bankrupt
