Love Jess's hand gestures when showing things, like her perfect cutting skills! JB! You shouldn't be stand... OK, I won't say it! 😉I thought there was gonna be more soil on top 🤔But I guess you answered that question right after haha.. It will be interesting to see the progress!

Hi JB, Jess is definitely good at DIY 😉 really good video, with plenty of useful info on building & maintaining a hot bed. Thanks for sharing and take care 😊

I’m excited to see how this works. We are going to do this inside of some of our greenhouses this fall to see if we can grow all winter without heat

It hasn't worked at all but it was a nice idea 😂 I've done a few little follow ups in some of the other video diaries but I think it's officially a failure. I might try one above ground next year!

how can it be a failure if its only been in a few weeks? did the soil not end up getting hot? @@JBNat

This was filmed 11th Feb :) I had also partially filled the bed with manure before this video, maybe a week or so earlier I can't remember exactly

'A JB effort' 🤣This was a really useful watch and rather serendipitous as I've just had a go at another hotbed after a failed(ish) attempt last year (I also put up a vlog about it yesterday - great minds...). I'm not using manure so trying it with ramial woodchip which I know is *possible* but also kind of tricky - so like you, very much experimenting with this method. I probably won't plant on top of the bed, it is more for just putting seed trays on - but I'll see how it goes and maybe add a layer of compost on top later on. I've covered with plastic because it is outside, but I don't think I will have the same problems with off-gassing using woodchip. Let's see how we get on!

Woodchip is a great idea! I might try that at some point next year too, especially if yours works well.

Hi JB, I think you mentioned on Potty Mouth that you would be digging the manure up when you plant your tomatoes. Why don’t you leave it in and move your hotbed down the polytunnel each year, thus enriching the bed over time. Happy gardening.

My grandparents used to start making a hot bed thingy in a new veg bed area every late autumn after the pigs were culled using kitchen scraps not suitable for the chickens. Under a wire mesh my grandfather made in one of the factories he had relocated with Beaverbrook. They threw everything in (👈🏻 everything 😬). Then covered it with a cold frame (over the mesh) to bring on early potted up cold hardy plants. It’s where my father got his love of radishes and early cabbage leaves from as a child: First fresh food in spring during the continued post war rationing era. The bed was then used to grow runner beans. He still repeats to me every year that beans grow better, tastier and straighter from a fertile, loose base than that of the theory beans produce their own nitrogen. That may be, he says (every year), but, he goes on (every year), I’ve never had such good beans as when my mother grew them. Horse (unwormed) manure was saved for the roses. A valuable ray of summer sunshine during those dark post-war days. I should video record his musings. For our own children. My siblings and I tend to change the subject when he’s on his annual repeats! 😂🫡 Emergency greenhouses in those days had huge hot water pipes passing through with large wheeled shutoff values. All built as lean-tos against kitchen walls. Not separate structures like in village manors. I remember having to dismantle ours to re strengthen/turn the Victorian tie that kept the Tudor section of the house from falling down! Well. All that from a KZbin how-to hotbed video! 😂. I’ll click send, nevertheless. Some might find it interesting. 😎

With your hot bed being so late, could you just use it for now to keep pots and seed trays warm?

You know this might be the smart thing to do!

That was painful watching! 🤣But you got there in the end..... thanks to Jess!👍 You could always add your own nitrogen if there's not enough in it 😉

Great vid.. As someone that studied Chemistry.. I’m guessing another reason for ventilation (other than humidity and smell) would be to make sure there’s no build up of Ammonia gas in the Polytunnel- is that the case?

JB it looks fine. I was just wondering can I make a hot bed in a planter on legs with a lid. I've just gotten two and was thinking of doing hotbeds in them.
@JBNat8 ай бұрын
The main thing is whether or not you can get the quantity of material in there to start generating heat, but always worth an experiment!
