In this video, I start focusing on the underframe of the workbench. More specifically, the mortice and tenons going into the legs.

Literally years after the fact, but I'm really enjoying this so far. I do like your more developed style that came out through the years, and I can't wait for the end dovetail detail video!

Hey Matt, Loving the videos on your amazing Roubo workbench. Now I haven't read all the other comments, in case this has already been mentioned, but just a quick thought - Would have been really helpful if you had spent a few minutes at the very beginning of the video series to run through your design drawing or an overview of how the design works; it would make following a lot of the technical details a lot easier if you already understood the context and the big picture. Super interesting all the same though - well done ;)

I bought and sold my hollow-chisel mortising press because my experience was similar to yours. I had to use my whole body weight to get it to go through any leg of any size and it was super difficult. It is usually easier to just drill out most of the waste with a forstner bit and then chisel out the edges, at least in my experience.

Pretty awesome build. That bench turns out beautiful. Definitely nice to have access to all that equipment at the college. When I made mine it was 100% hand tools and lots and lots of hours and exhaustion lol. Toward the end of my build I wasn’t exactly having fun anymore haha.

Hi Matt,I have been following your work and methods of media instruction for a while now and you have talent that's for sure, lucky some would say to dtop onto something that you are good at and enjoy and make a living at the same time, as a bush pilot said to me once if you enjoy your work you will never do a hards days work in your life.I have recently moved residency to S England from Wales and will be setting up some kind of workshop in the next year or so and the Roubo I have decided will be the bench for me and what better way to increase your skill than building one of those,I purchased your plans a while ago but haven't had the opportunity to study them yet .You stated that the one in the video was all Ash , is it possible to state the cost of the total wood used and if not Ash then what other wood , would you use. Many thanks for any assistance and guidance

I'm on this part now and really like the series. One question though: Are those axminster clamps any good? I'm not a wood worker at all but sometimes I could use a strong clamp. For exampel: Holding down my vise so I can saw or file various things.

Maybe get some clamps that you can drive with a rattle gun, that would make light weight of pulling the legs off.

Why is it bad to use a regular bevel chisel instead of a mortising chisel?
@MattEstlea
@MattEstlea 6 жыл бұрын
Mortise chisels transfer the power of a mallet much better than a bevel chisel due to their robust build. Means you have to put less effort into whacking the chisel which is better for the tool and your elbows! Other than that, no real problem with it.

The natural movement of the wood is halted by the through tenons from the legs. If it was one solid block of laminates, you'd risk gaps between the laminates due to shrinkage. Or even worse - the bench becoming narrower/wider at the top than at the bottom of the legs.

So the moral of the story is without all these sophisticated giant gargantuan tools you can't build this bench.
