I did a set of Ping G10 irons in single length in 2011,i live in the Phx. area.So i took the irons to Ping and had them change out the custom tuning ports( weights in the back of the heads) and adjust the lie angles according to their color chart in .75 deg. down thru the set starting from maroon down till all were 67 deg. I then had the irons reshafted with SST PURED graphite shafts at 36 1/2 in. long. Turned out to be the best move i ever made for my golf game.

Thanks, that answers a lot of questions! About to turn a set of old blade to a set of Single Length blades, i plan on making everything the headweight of a 6 iron (as its a modern day 7 or 8 iron), and shave out weight on the 7-pw in a very BenHogan FT15 type shape. The butt trimming to length has me intrigued. I played with a set of cobra single length and my biggest complaint was the progressive shaft/head weight, i swore if i made my own set i would make it with all 7 iron shafts, but you may have changed my mind.

I did my own variation of single-lengths. I have a set of JPX 900 forged Mizunos. I’m not a good 4 or 5 iron player, so I just went all 6 iron lengths. And replaced my 4 and 5 irons with a graphite shaft hybrid. No complaints or issues so far.

@GolfWRX I saw you progressively tipped the shafts by 1/2in and then butt trimmed them to length. How much did you tip the 4i? Is this the standard method for all .370 shafted SL irons? I have a sent of Cobra Forged Tec (Gen4) and they used the exact same trimming specs. Thanks in advance!

Great video. This is basically what I was thinking... Since you tip cut these in 1/2" increments and butt cut them to the uniform length, they will be progressively less stiff as you go from more to less loft. This seems like a good idea, making the less lofted ones slightly easier to hit, but there's a lot of variables here. Also, since the shafts get lighter as loft goes from more to less, that would alter the head weight changes that you would need slightly. Those two things offset each other so that you don't need quite as much weight adjustment. I'm going to do a single length (7i length) rebuild of my old set of Snake Eyes Viper Tour irons. I'll just butt cut them to length, weigh the resulting head/shafts to determine the weight changes I need. I'm thinking that I will use a slight weight progression to factor in the progressively stiffer shafts as loft increases. Also, since the less lofted clubs will bend more, I'm wondering if I should make the lie angles slightly progressive. Emphasis on slightly. I'll do lie angles last, trying the clubs out before changing that. I'm leaving my Wedges standard length for now (P, G, S, L) until I test the 4-9.

So, how did they hit? Did you have good distance gapping?

I know in my shop we use the wire side of a club brush and scratch the tape after solvent has been applied and it makes the grips slide on like butter

Hello there. I've been playing single length irons for several years now that are made by 1 Iron Golf. All of the heads they use are the exact same weight (obviously for single length irons). So in watching you build these irons I'm a little confused as to why you used lead tape when you can modify the weights like someone else suggested get different weight screws to get the iron heads weigh the same. For example all of my head weights are 265 grams. Can you be so kind to comment on this?

I still need to add 24g to my 5iron…can’t find anything that’s NOT tungsten tape. With pxg 4-6iron, why add lead tape? Can’t u just swap the screws for heavier screws?
@sdsarmad15 жыл бұрын
Hey. nice project. I have noticed you can buy different PXG screw weight off eBay. Perhaps that would make it much cleaner than using lead tapes. You can remove any of your existing screws and replace it with a heavier screw on your longer irons instead of tape. :)

I have the exact same clubs, the PXG 0311's (as a second set) and want to do exactly what you have just done. Thanks for the video, it will help a lot. Question, did you put something in the holes after removing the weighted screws, to prevent damage or dirt buildup? Also, as a PGA member I still play reasonably decent golf, usually in the 70's, and want your opinion as to going with a full set of all 7 iron shafts, or, a progressive shaft set. If I go all 7 iron shafts, other than adjust weight and lie angle, do I but cut the shaft after install? If I go progressive, do I cut the tip or but cut later? Sorry, this may need read very well.

has anyone tried this? How did it turn out? Yes - you can adjust the loft, lie angles and shaft lengths of the PXGs - but comparing it to my sterlings, there is still the matter of the progressive offsets and the high COR material of the 4-7i, which you won't have in the modified PXGs right?

Did the finished total overall weight of each iron come out the same, also did they all frequency the same finished? Thanks for the video.

I own a set of pxg and recently bought sterling single length. Would like to try this. Have you compared the performance of your pxg singles to actual singles like sterling or cobra?

So I converted 4-10, yes 10 of Ping Eye 2. All heads adjusted to 260 grams, shaft 108/109. Grips were all about 52. At 420 grams I was able to achieve C-7.5 to C-8.5 swing weight on the set and get very close to 420 grams total (original weight of a 7) They are all 37.25 length. 9 and 10 got an extended butt. For the most part, these are progressive tip cuts. 8, 9, and10 iron got ground and polished to weight. I cut the hozel shorter on 9 and 10 to guard against a disproportionate amount of weight distribution. The 4 had weight added in the hozel and a round piece of tungsten glued to the back cavity. The 5 and 6 were given specifically weighted foreign coins glued to the back of the cavity to bring them to 260 grams. The shafts were all zz-lite. The set was originally manufactured in 1990-91. Some highlights. The 4 is easy to hit, but if you hit it wrong, you feel it. Back then I think those were around 21 degrees? The 10 is just a pretty sweet and accurate wedge for me. Even though they are all the same, I feel most comfortable with the 6 and 10. The lie is 63 degrees on all. All clubs tested on a lie mat etc. The hardest thing was getting that length exact as the hozals are not uniform in depth. If you set them before adjusting lie, you'll likely be adjusting location of shaft in the hozel a couple of times on a couple of clubs (to get perfect length). The Pings polish up great. The cavity portion were coated in matt black durabake and heated per manufacture specifications. I think they are pretty sick. My loft on the 9 is 44 and the 10 is at 49 btw.

Why would you tip them like regular irons? The purpose of adding the weight to equal a 7 iron is to play them at a 7 iron length. The 4i will play like a lady flex.

if you've got enough money to have PXG in your bag, you've probably got enough money to get them to make you a custom one of a kind one length set over trying it yourself!!

Making your own single length set is cool but I wouldn't use $3000.00 irons to do it.
@GDKRichardson6 жыл бұрын
Oh, dear! Instead of all this complexity, save a bunch of time and money by simply converting an old existing set of irons. Cut the long irons shafts to match the 7 iron, and put in extensions in the short irons shafts to match the 7 iron. Did that to my Nike's and immediately dropped 26 strokes off my handicap. Whole thing cost less than $100. If the converted single lengths helped you improve, buy an actual SL set of irons the following year, but BEWARE that Cobras and Sterlings do NOT offer single-offsets and single-lie angles in their SL clubs!!
@milanboskovic96185 жыл бұрын
Don Kirk Sterlings are same lie angle through the set. Not sure about Cobra, I know forged tec black has stepped lie angle through the set, by unsure about the rest of models available.

No, the Wishon Sterling clubs are single lie (along with length, weight, MOI matching, etc). They do have progressive offset yes
