Great idea. I used to think 3 length would have worked well, but never tested it. 4-6, 7-9. with the remaining wedges being the same length. I would take weight from the iron lower rear back, the same as Calloway do with their jaws wedges, then place lighter or heavier weight plugs into the heads to suit requirements. Interesting to see the results, typed this while watching. Love watching you experiment, testing out ideas. Altering lofts to fine tune, overall it worked, and is worthy of pursuing further.

Interesting. I'm an avid single length player and everything in the concept works for me. Pinhawk Vertex is a dual length set that already produces this. Of course the build is fun but man, ... a big rebuild. Fun though. 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻

I play one length 4-7 irons, then let the club length progress standard length 8-9 with PW and AW at 9 iron length. Been playing this setup for the last 6 years. Makes the long end of the bag easier to hit. As I have aged(now 65), the longer length PW and AW have allowed me to regain some distance with my scoring irons.

I had a set in the 90s with 8-w,56,60 all the same length. Really good for scoring. Didn't make any adjustments to weight. The wedges did feel heavy but that's a good thing. Great content, thanks AJ

I purchased a set of irons with 1” longer shafts in 5 to GW where the PW and GW were the same length. The 8 iron was my favourite iron and I struggled with the length of the longer irons so I cut the 5,6 and 7 to the same length as the 8, which in effect made the 6 iron standard length, the 7 iron 1/2” long and 5 iron 1/2” short, I didn’t bother about the weight or swing weight or altering the lie angle but I haveto say I hit them a lot better now than I did when they were all 1” long

I do a version of this at the bottom of my bag. My 8-9-Pw-Gw are all 37.00 inches. I use very heavy grips (82g) so swing weights are not that crazy despite the added length. My wedges are all 36.00. For 5-6-7 irons, I just do a standard +1/2 inch. I don't want them the same length because it compresses my gapping. I would love to see a manufacturer do a TRI-LENGTH set ... Wedges at 36.00, short irons at 37.00 and long irons at 38.00 (or something along those lines).

I've always been a bit of a toe striker. In part because I want to stay clear of the hosel, but more so, intuitively, that's where I think the sweet spot should be. Maybe drilling out the hotel like you have done, then adding lead tape towards the toe is a good solution to keep swing weight reasonable.

Thanks for the video. The cobra single length also have massive gapping. For me the 7 to 5 iron all went the same distance, just different spins/airtime. Also the gap wedge went way too far. In the end i didn’t end up using many of the clubs very often and only used like gap, 9, 7. I would say lofts definitely need to be well tuned to the user.

I'm happy with the progress of my swing with traditional irons, although the tinkerer in me will make wake up one day and order a set to build. Diamond Tour Golf sells components for an absurdly affordable price that is somewhat of a temptation called In one zone....quality is debatable. Also, Hireko and some others sells the Pinkawk 1 length and 2 length versions. Higher quality and a little more expensive. Integra makes one called I-Win that is worth looking at.if you're an OEM type guy only, don't bother, but if you like experimenting without spending a lot of money, it's worth a look see.

Thanks AJ. I've been considering this idea ever since 1-length became a thing. It makes so much more sense. But I couldn't/can't afford to test the concept myself, and nobody on YT has, until now. An important observation was the challenge in timing when moving up into the longer shafts. Perhaps a 3-length iron set ... ? I was a little concerned that you removed all the weight from the heads in the hosel/heel only. Wouldn't that drastically shift the CoG and cause the club to have a slower closure rate, keeping the face open?

I know that this video is a year old but I thought in case anyone is looking at the comments I would add what I have done. I have back issues and find that the shorter the club the worse it feels. So I bought a set of Cobra One Length Irons on a good deal to play around with. After playing them for a couple rounds I concluded that I would need to extend them as my normal 7 iron would play at 38 vs 37 1/4 that the one length irons are. However I am finding the one length 9 - GW plenty long. So what I did was create a "2 length" setup with the 5/6/7/8 at 38" and the 9/PW/GW at the factory length of a "normal" 7 iron. I played them this morning and so far they seem good and the gap from playing an 8 vs 9 does not seem awkward and the distance gap seems appropriate. I know the swing weight of the extended clubs will be off but I am one of those guys who is always tinkering with length and play my driver at 44" and have never felt the reduced swing weight is an issue. Anyway thought I would add my thoughts on having a 2 length setup. I should mention that I am 6'3" and with my wrist to floor measurement I typically play all my irons at 3/4" over length.

Interesting build Ajay. Very tight results on total weight. That cost some money in parts and your time to test that theory. It seems like the same length shafts can hurt your gapping between certain irons.

It seems the 4I and 9I lofts need to be adjusted stronger and the 7I loft needs to be adjusted weaker. Was this done? If not, why not? Did the client have his own gapping session done? Why weren't the decent angles discussed? I've been playing with a dual length set for over a year but my lengths break at GW. So, 5I-9I are 37" and GW, SW, LW are at 36". This arrangement works out well. How was the decision made to break this set at the 9I? Thanks, AJ.

This all came from the client. He sent me all the specs and asked for them to be built this way. He is out of state so we never did a gap session. Ideally he will hit them for a bit and then send them back for adjustments based on playing notes.

I'd guess the client has faster speeds which would make the 4 iron work better. I made a test 4 iron at 37" and drilled out like 40g of headweight. My driver speed is like 100 mph and it didn't work for me at all. Like 180 carry nuke bullets. My friend at 115 mph hit that 4 iron no problem. Solid peak height and descent angle.

I have a problem with my build. I have a Callaway Rogue ST Pro irons. I trim tipped my Steelfiber I95 shafts according to manufactory recommendations. The 9 and pw was tipped the same at 3-1/2 inches. I glued them all together and found that my pitching wedge hosel is about 1/4 inch longer than the rest of my irons. The logo on pw shaft is higher than my 9 iron. Do i take the pw apart and tip trim it some more. I think i might be running close to the taper already. My ferrule might get stuck. Or do i just play it like that. PW might be a little more flimsy now. Let me know. Thanks.

Hi AJ, interesting concept but why not doing this with head natively made to be one length? For example Wishon eq1-nx head. Awesome job! Just curious if making a head dramatically heavier has a big impact on the way the shaft plays? I reshafted a set of Dynamic Gold 120 to KBS tour lite and the swingweight dropped to C5 so added lead tape to get back to D1 and they seemed to flex more and I hit them fat which is rare for me. Removed lead tape and although swingweight is C5 the flex seems better and no more hitting heavy.

Here we only are using 6i and wedge shafts so the head weights were all pretty close to stock weights, at least close enough where I didn't feel any additional flex.

It would be very interesting for you to do a show about Bryson DeChambeau first club build the five iron him, and his coach made, and where he went next the clubs he won the amateur with and then maybe the club right after that which was the Elden and where I would like to know the swing of those clubs I believe the swing is very light, but I’m not sure The CPM, which we probably won’t know the length and the head weights and also the grip weights and sizes I know when young days he had 123 g grip I believe now he uses a lightweight grip. How has he evolved? I had rotary cuff surgery. I took my callaway Apex 2019‘s and ground off the backside making the soul thinner swing weight at 38 inches is C0 with standard grips. I know Bryson‘s driver in the past has been B9. I don’t know about his irons.

This is definitely something that only an experienced clubmaker with equipment should try to take on. I think I would just buy something like a Pinhawk rather than convert a traditional set. I would imagine that some of the design features for distance control are engineered within the head itself. Although, maybe the dude has bought into the dual length concept 100%, and his traditional Mizunos would just collect dust in a corner somewhere.

If his swing matches yours, the top of the bag is very bunched up. The 6 should just be bent to the 5 loft, then the gapping between 7 to 6 would be the same as between the 9 to 8 and 8 to 7. Then he could drop the 5 and 4 and select 2 more clubs to go in the bag.

I don't think matching the wedges is a good idea. For the PW-4 I would probably split them into 2 lengths. PW-8 is a similar feel to me and 6-4 are similar. The 7 I would stick on the lower length though. The lengths would be between an 8-9 and then a 5 iron length for the longer.

The earlier models like the F7 had constant lie angles. They made revisions informed by fitting. The 'long irons' got lighter softer shafts and more upright lie angles. This was to help promote more launch. As you see in AJ's video a 4 iron at 37.5" launches quite low unless you have more clubhead speed. My theory is that when you're 210 from the green you tend to swing a bit harder than if you're 120 out - even if the clubs are the same spec. So the change in lie angle accounts for the psychology change in how people play these clubs.
@SP_99999

Some brand like cobra (in recent iterations) change angles while other like Wishon keep the same, keep in mind that before he change brand Bryson was using “old” cobra head that doesn’t change the angle between different clubs. I play with an old set of cobra f8 one length and don’t like so much the different angle moving from the 4i to for example pw.

You overcomplicate things. Swing weight doesn't matter for a 15+ handicap player. I thought of a two-length system 3 yrs ago after building my own one-length iron set. Make 6,7,8 irons same lengths as regular 6 iron - so you do not lose distance with 6 iron. Adjust lie to 6 iron. For 9, PW, GW & SW, make all 9 iron length. Adjust their lies similar to 9 iron . And woods! Adjust 7W,5W,3W all to either 7W length or 5W length, depending which the customer hits best. Have 3H & 5H same length. Which he hits best, use that length.

All that lead tape will change the ball flight characteristics those clubs should produce. Gapping will not go well. You'll be able to play with the lead tape, but the clubheads where you removed weight...you're stuck with them as-is. Using two different lengths defeats the purpose of single-length irons. Yes, even with single-length clubs you have other clubs of different lengths in the bag. But having all the irons the same is incredibly important. Did the swing weights work out as projected? I bet not. Surprising omission. Which direction in the set you move is immaterial since golf isn't played that way. Not at all surprised that the gapping is inconsistent. I've been playing single-length irons for 7 years with a single-digit HC. There is no way I'd use more than one length in the irons. And there is "extra no way" I'd try to adjust a conventional set into either a single-length or even a double-length configuration. You have to remove too much weight from the wedges to make them work--which means they won't work anyway. And you have to add so much weight to the low-lofted irons as to make them unhittable, too. Pass.
@EFGMC
@EFGMC Жыл бұрын
Answering your 2 questions. Yes, as stated in the video the SW was all at D1 in the short set and D0 in the longer set. Which direction you test most certainly makes a difference here when you are hitting all the same length repeatedly and then moving into the longer clubs.
