Being a gardener in the hot desert southwest, I have learned a lot about shade cloth. White shade cloth is better than black shade cloth especially if the cloth is close (within a few feet) to the plants. Black cloth filters the sun BUT it can also trap in the heat. White cloth both reflects the sun and doesn't trap in the heat. To make it easier to take the cloth on and off, attach carabiner clips to the wire and then attach the carabiner clips to the eye hooks. Support the shade cloth in the center by running wire in an X shape. This keeps the cloth from sagging in the middle. I use 50% white shade cloth and I can still grow a lot of veggies even when temps are consistently above 100. Hope that helps.

Great job! I live in the southwest with hugs over 110° and have shade cloth and umbrellas for that exact reason. I have to close my huge umbrella if it is going to storm. Maybe I’ll use your inspiration and have my hubby build more structures because I hate if it storms and knocks the umbrellas over onto my plants.

That is a fantastic idea… I probably have 100 old tennis balls from when I was coaching. I probably donated 1000 to nursing homes and living facilities… Seems like everybody has all the tennis balls they know what to do with. So yeah fantastic idea I will, put them in a basket and save them for when doing something like this. Thanks for the idea.

Great job Miah!!! I love the way you are able to explain your thought process in simple terms that a non-experienced person can follow. You obviously have an engineer’s mind, but you also function as a natural teacher. Thank you so much sharing this with us. (I am kind of jealous of your kids. They can learn so much practical knowledge from you.). My father was a general contractor and I inherited his brain, but he died when I was a baby and being a girl, no one thought to involve me in building things. But my mind is always spinning as I look at how things are built. Now, I am too old and weak to build things myself but my brain never stops. I really really enjoy your gifts. Thanks and do not ever stop giving God praise for your wonderful skills and opportunities. You are a very blessed man and a blessing to everyone around you.

One way to tighten up the shade cloth since the post are already in would be to use an eyelet straight out the top of each post. Yes it would raise the shade cloth up by about five inches but it would allow you to pull the fabric tighter since it will also set each eyelet back by about three inches. You can get eyelets that screw into the post instead of the longer ones that go through the post.

Miah, we've been using different types of shade cloth on our garden to protect from blazing temps in CA. When the temp hit 90's it goes up, we have low humidity but it has made a Iot of difference in triple digit temps. I also have raised beds with cattle panel trellis' and tomatoes that go well above them. The poles that hold the fabric are 10 ft tall and we have soft paracord across the garden to hold the fabric above the panels. I use cheap pool noodles, split on one side to slip over any panel or arch dome that the fabric could flap on, with a plastic zip tie to secure in place. I would advice you to cover the end fittings/turn buckles with noodles and possibly the metal cable with lengths of drip irrigation tube. Next spring I plan to repace my worn cording with drip tube covered metal cable. You are right, this fabric flaps like crazy and anything with a bit of rough texture will demolish it! We have also found stretching it too tightly will cause tears at the grommets. Good luck! Blessings, Jan

This is our 2nd year with shade cloth. Our garden is more squared. We basically used the same set up, but to help with the sag we ran diagonal tension wires from the four corners, too. Shade cloth makes such a difference in the southern plains.

If you had a big storm coming, you could untie the 550 cords at the corners, push the cloth to the center posts (on the long sides) and wrap the cloth in cord. This way it wouldn't act as a sail at least. It will still get knocked around, but it might not get damaged anyway.

I used to own a perennial flower business and we had several of these types of structures built to keep the sun off of young and started perennials. They work great and you can get the shade clothes in a variety of sizes for the home garden needs. I currently have small shade cloths draped over my lettuce beds. Keeps them cool and extends the growing window nicely for those. Good job Miah!

Here in Australia last year I was worried at the beginning of our season that we were going to have a very hot summer (didn’t happen) so I had gotten my husband to enclose our beds similar to making bedrooms with a garden bed in the centre using long star pickets. He then drilled and screwed in support framing at the top so that I could use zip ties to tie down then shade cloth over the tops of our growing areas. To add mayhem to misery here last summer we ended up with moths that laid eggs which became vegetable eating machines as caterpillars, so I then enclosed the sides with mesh to stop the moths getting inside and laying their eggs. I spent most of our summer hand pollinating everything that inside the rooms so that we would get fresh produce to form. It was such a task to build these that I have kept them installed and this summer all of our raised beds are inside the mesh rooms and I have a lot of large containers that I grew additional vegetables in and placed them inside along the walls. I hope this season is less bug ridden than the last. You did a great job and showed us really well Miah how to achieve this in a larger way. Very much appreciated :)

Yeah, that South Carolina heat is really something! I'm just around the bend from you, and it's a real slog!! Got two Panicum virgatum in the ground for their first summer, and they're even looking a bit haggard. I'm afraid I might lose one or two of my Carex pensylvanica, too, and they're under the shade of a nice oak. Crazy how blisteringly hot and dry the summer's here can be. Still, it's a lovely place and I wouldn't want to be anywhere else!! To protect the cloth from the metal, think about using pool noodles sliced down the middle and slipped over the metal parts. With a few of those durable zip ties or even some good twine, you'll have protection for years and years. Plus, you can get the pool noodles in really fun colors that'll make the whole decor really pop!!

I also use shade cloth in my western Kansas garden, but it serves a dual purpose. Not only do we get super hot in the summer (103 as I write this) we also get violent summer storms with wind and hail. I have a variety of pipe and wood structures over my vegetable and cutting garden beds. Some stay covered all of the hot months, others I can cover at a moment’s notice if a storm is coming. I use inexpensive harbor freight shade tarps, which have help up for several years use now.

Ive been using shade cloth for years. I just ordet new to replace my old that's breaking down. The new has uv protection spray ao it won't break down as soon in my southern Florida sun. My cloth is usually 70% because if the uv intensity. I can geow greens year round using it. It's a life saver. I take it down nin winter and love growing all my tomatoes, peppers, greens and everything else year round here. I put metal fence poles in a 5 gallon bucket and put in concrete. So i can move and store the buckets for winter or adjust the way the cloth needs th be according to the sun. The bucket is heavy enough to not tip . I have to take my shade cloth down when a tropical storm ir hurricane is in the way so it's much easier to get things moved. I can also bury the buckets if i don't see moving nthe. Fo a while with the option to pull them out later. If the cloth is sitting on anything sharp i cut pool noodles and put them on the sharp object so the cloth doesn't rip when shifting in the wind.

What you could do instead of taking it down for high winds since the cable on either side is fed through the fabric eyelets is just disconnect the four corners, slide both side of the Fabric into the middle, bunch it up and tie up with string or wire, till the storm/wind is over and then just stretch it back out and reconnect the four corners, would be a lot less work

Jess I want you to know I just listened to your latest pod cast. I want to thank you for your words… some days I feel like what my husband and I are doing here is not enough. Yet it is what we can do in this phase of life. I am 53 and fighting cancer I will for the rest of my life.. however we grow the vast majority of our food and we local source what we can’t grow.. or buy from sources that stand with our beliefs.. we only have one ac here and that is not enough land for a dairy source other than goats and honestly with my health that is just not a option at this point. We do have chickens for eggs etc.. we have berry plants , fruit trees and gardens in every spot we can find.. I can and store away a fast amount of food each season and bake all our breads. But I can’t grow wheat or the chicken. Feed. Those things have to be sources off the little farm… same with our milk we source it from a local family farm.. we do our best to lesson our need for big box stores etc but sometimes there is no other choice… just know you made me feel heard by your podcast..

One way to prevent the cloth from catching on a sharp t-post top os to get some pvc that is just a little taller than the t-posts. put a cap on it and strap or zip-tie it to the most problematic t-posts. or you could cap the t-post with old tennis balls. As for wind, it can take quite a heavy wind and a lot of intense flapping. I have my smaller shade cloths attached to wire structures with clothes pins, and aside from flapping, I’ve never had it let go in a storm.

I just covered my eggplants and a strawberry bed with shade cloth a couple weeks ago. My eggplants look happy again. They'd stopped putting on blooms. I just had T-posts to keep the cloth up. To avoid holes, I bought a pool noodle from Dollar Tree and cut off short sections. Carved out a little of the inside of the pool noodle to accommodate the shape of the T-post and jammed them on. To stop the wind from catching the cloth enough to pull it off the post, I tied twine below the base of the pool noodle to encase it in the cloth. Works like a charm.

Another benifit of shade cloth is hail protection. I use it over my grapes for this purpose as we get hail here frequently.

I have a massive sycamore tree on my south side that protects my main garden. Very fortunate in that. Miah u r a mechanical dream. My dad was a trim carpenter & would have put u to work😁. Unfortunately I don’t hav dad or u so I’m just gonna put some shade cloth and pool noodles to work on the trellises if need be. Supposed to get to 102* today. I put in soaker hoses & doubled the mulch this morning. Love your work💜

Nice work! Just a thought for the ease of removal - use threaded chain clips to attach the shade cloth to the cable so that you can leave the cable in place. With the wire through the rivets, you will have to remove everything and reinstall it.

I think we could do this in our fenced in garden for two purposes. Sometimes we need a place for our collies to be but it is not shaded enough. It could serve both purposes of the garden and keeping things cooler for our dogs. We also have an area off of our barn that is not shaded. We usually use this area for our dogs if we are leaving for a few days. They can get in the barn but would be cooler if the outside area would have shade cloth. I had mentioned it to my husband this past week because I do have a shade cloth. I will show him your video now. Thank you!

I had the shade cloth over my garden for years. It also protects from lite to medium hail.

This is a great idea! Consider using a carabiner type hook at the eyelets for easier removal.

Great job Miah! Shade cloth really does help cool things down for sure. I’ve been using a 40% shade cloth for a couple summers now. We are in zone 7a and our summers are getting hotter and hotter!

That looks good. What if you put a little flower pot like a 2” or 3” pot on top of each T-post to keep it from snagging the shade cloth. It works in a much smaller scale. It might work for this. 🤷‍♀️

Cut a large X (or T) in the bottom of a tennis ball and top your T posts. If it starts to get caught on the top of the panels you can split a pool noodle and top that as well.
