Absolutely love your channel.. you have a beautiful garden and your hard work really shows. I’m amazed at the health and vigor of all your plants and I truly love the raised beds...back in the 1960’s here in Missouri, my grandma had a really large garden every summer, and she was quite a successful gardener too.....she fertilized early spring with turkey manure, saved and started everything from seed... she canned a lot of food ...grew all her own onions and potatoes for the entire year and kept the potatoes in a big mountain of a pile on the floor in the basement to store them...I distinctly remember that when it got really hot in the summer and some plants would show wilt and stress, she would go into the woods with a hatchet and cut branches from trees or cut young saplings and bring them into the garden and shade her plants with them....somehow, she managed to make a teepee or something to that effect , or a lean to with the cut branches, and shade the garden plants...thanks for taking the time and effort to share your love and joy of gardening with us.

@@lindawakefield-gephart9550 I'm not sure and I'm no expert, but the tomatoes split from within and the usual route for entering water is from the roots . . .
@norawade8127
@norawade8127 3 жыл бұрын
@@lindawakefield-gephart9550 tomatoes most often split when they have a sudden large intake of water. This happens most especially when ppl have missed a few waterings and then over water to compensate. Having the water flow away from the roots keeps the roots from absorbing excess water and would hypothetically reduce the chance for splitting

Hey Jess, for my squash I have started shredding mine and freezing. I can then use it in breads or soups or just mix with other recipes. That way it is not soggy and we still get nourishment from the garden. I wanted to say that with your discussion of the squash bugs , it made me think of planting my squash and pumpkins in their own little garden for this year! Also, It never even occurred to me that planting early bloomers in succession would give me more food.I am continually learning every year. This is my 3rd year for gardening for food. Looking forward to the abundance this year.

Jess, thank you for sharing your garden. I love Benjamin’s natural curiosity and o he wants to taste everything. I believe more children would be willing to eat a variety of vegetables if they are introduced early on to tastey home grown vegetables. I live in Illinois and every winter I read about vegetables and different growing techniques, then I start a small area of veggies and flowers. However I have terrible follow through. At the end of my workday I’m tired. And the garden reminds me of my grand babies who aren’t allowed to see me or spend time with me. They loved my little square gardening patches, I taught them that cherry tomatoes are nature’s candy. Before age 2 My granddaughter would eat red raspberries as quickly as her brothers picked them and hollering “Mine” I live on a half of a city lot 50 x 75 but I still like to grow tomatoes, green and chocolate peppers, cucumbers, cilantro and a variety of flowers around my home. I haven’t seen much sweet peppers in your garden are they harder to grow in Arkansas or don’t you like them? I’m enjoying watching your KZbin videos and only recently found your site. Keep the vlogs coming and the garden devotionals also. Many blessings to you and your family..

I've saved mesh bags from onions, etc, to use for spring flowering bulbs ( Narcissus, Tulips, Hyacinth, Crocus, etc.), which I plan on lifting after the stems yellow, to allow to dry down cellar until I relocate them in the fall. Those kinds of bags - if available for purchase new - in various sizes would be plenty strong enough for heavy melons. Then you could use a strong twine through openings in the mesh bag to attach to something above. If bags that size are not available, I'd make simple macrame hangers like used to hang plants, - or try to find the most basic macrame plant hangers - for large pots. You could find steps for making simple plant hangers online - using square knots. Vertical lengths must be in multiples of 2, & length & spacing of 2 or 3 rows of square knots, which would be determined by the size of the produce & where & how it would be attached above, to support the produce. What would you be hanging it from? If attaching the support to the the stem, & the mellon is quite heavy, the twine used might cut into & damage the vine, with all that weight - at times being moved by the wind. To avoid that, you could add a piece of leather or fabric - like a heavy felt, to stitch around the twine where it is attached to the vine itself, unless there's a trellis or like the cattle fencing Jess is using for her arbors, to attach the twine to. If it's to be a reusable item, you'd have to consider how it is to be attached. with enough length of twine, you can group together by 1/2, pull one 1/2 on each side of wire or trellis section, & simply tie loose ends into a knot, cut of excess or leave hanging, so it can be untied & used in future situations. I could easily make such a thing, but - would I want to make 30, or 50? Maybe there's a better solution out there. The knee high stockings might be easier, but wouldn't be large enough to stretch around those big melons, or the long ones, so guess they'd attach to just the stem. Looks like it might be possible trust Mother Nature though. Those stems & vines look plenty strong.

Regarding preserving pumpkin: We peel, cube & blanch it briefly (I bring it to the boil & cook for just three minutes, then scoop it out, spread the cooked pumpkin on trays until cool & then freeze them in freezer bags). I froze Crown Prince & White Boer Pumpkin like that & we ate through Winter & Spring. The texture was perfect so I can recommend the method.

I have to share my experience with you. My first year moving to raised beds from container gardening, Many of my tomato plants were destroyed by horn worms. The next year (I don't remember why), I started to inter-plant the tomatoes with basil and marigolds. I have done this essentially every year since. I know it is anecdotal, but I haven't seen a horn worm since then and that was at least 8 years ago.. You have probably gotten rid of your horn worms by now. Oversized okra just means seeds for next year! Haven't seen any marigolds for companion plants. I use 2 pouches of chewing tobacco, in 5 gal bucket of water and let it brew outside for a couple days (Sun Tea)...strain it and you have a safe, natural bug spray, great for squash bugs, beetles, afids, ect. Before anyone asks... the nicotine in the spray won't cause addiction or adverse health effects. Many plants (besides tobacco have nicotine naturally in them.

Your "noodle beans" look a lot like the Asian yard long beans I grow in the SW Florida summers here. I love them! This year I planted sweet potatoes which became monsters and choked them out on the trellis but I still have a ton of them in the ground while the beans are just a memory. ;) For that wet area where you have standing water at times, I would bring in a bunch of wood chips. Load it up and the mud and standing water problem will be gone and in time you can dig out some nice compost.

A cucumber beetle inhibitor is putting a radish seed in with the cucumber/squash seed. It inhibits alot of vine borers. Just let the radish keep growing with the vine.

This lady is pretty amazing. She has SIX children and millions of plants and she is out there at the crack of dawn to walk her gardens. How does she have time to do all of this? And laundry, etc. LOL

PS, it gets super hot and humid in Kansas. I never had any success with heirlooms, especially Brandywine so I called Totally Tomatoes, I believe it was and talked to a horticulturist and he said heirlooms need it to cool back down some at night which it does not do in Kansas. Sometimes it's 100 or close at night. He suggested some of the heat tolerant tomatoes. I think one was Arkansas Traveler. You might talk to one of those experts so that you could possibly have ripe tomatoes past July since your family loves them so much!

Do you ever eat the male squash flowers? They are really great stuffed with herbed ricotta and gently fried. There is a round Italian zucchini that is incredibly sweet. Thanks for sharing! 💐

Hey Sweetie, We had a huge garden, & to keep bug, "Cutworms" from cutting them down, I've used "Aluminium Foil" Around the plants stem up about 3" from ground up, to stop them from being eaten, you may want to try, Loosely Foil around the stakes Is..OK💖 We had so many Peppers & Squash, Tons Of Potatoes, But our Sweet Potatoes were not as plentiful, but had enough. We moved to the Beach for awhile, but sold our Beach House, & Returned Back to Greenville, S.C. where we are from, & We have our work cut out of us this year, & I'm no longer a spring chicken! I'm a retired mail carrier, Love Gardening, & Flowers, The whole 9-yards! But, I Love Your Videos, Keep Up The Good Work, & 🙏God Bless🙏 You & Your Kids!💖😎💖..Oh, Just wanted to tell you, If you want to cut flowers stems, Rose's etc.To Plant Cutting, Try, "HONEY" Aound the part you plant in the ground, because it's like a (Steroids) to help (Root), Rose's, Even Orchids, Anything you can try! I Enjoyed The Garden Tour, & I'm thinking about getting a "BEE HIVE", Most People Don't Realize, But If Not For The "HONEY BEE'S", WE WOULD DIE!, BUT, HAVE A GREAT DAY.. SHA💖😎💖

Hello Jessica, my name is Melinda and our beautiful family lives just outside of the apple capital in the small town of Cashmere,Washington the home of Applets and Cotlets. I have always had some form of garden and dream of having a small farm. Our steps in that direction are small. You have inspired and given me hope that eventually we will reach our goal. Thank you for your words of wisdom and kindness.

Hello my dear. Your videos are great. Two items; 1) I had horn worms completely eat up my tomatos one year, I plant Merigolds and sweet basil next to all my tomatoes and have not seen a horn worms since, Totally anecdotal, but I'm gonna keep doing it. 2) Do you ever plant cabbage? I've been trying for years but they always bolt or the bugs and caterpillars eat them. This is my best year so far and i have kept them in shade. The napa still bolted but the ball head are making heads! Yay! Fingers crossed.

If Daniel wants to get rid of the skin tags left on his neck/shoulder area, he can have someone use sewing thread and tie a loop around each one, tightly, and it will fall off in a few days. Only do 4-5 at a time.
