You did a great job. Because of the long chimmany the air flow is probably cooking the wood in half the time. You may not need it but the next step would be a bigger container to make more but that makes about one bag of charcoal for normal use it does it work very well. Thank You Loader for the tips.

Jajaja. A retort its a very simple device, it will work as simple as the one i made. Any other addition as insulation, double barrel, internal piping for gases, and so on, will improve the way it works, but are not indispensable for get the job done. Thanks for your comment 👍😁

I had the same design as yours but sadly the fires stays at the level of the burning chamber. It does create a torch like fire all the way to the top of the steel pipe. Any advise?

Would be nice to see all that wasted heat captured but i like the high temperature that is reached so burns off wood gasses. It looks very small and those escaping gasses up the pipe through your 8 holes just heats the chimney could be used to fuel the fire below. What if that pipe was longer and set down lower than 1 inch (as 5:00 minute mark shows) Or put in 2' pipe from oven to expel gasses into flame for burning. Save fuel and chimney not show flames threw a 6 foot chimney. All that wasted heat should tell you something is wrong with design. Take care and thanks for upload.

Design a copper heat exchange coil to fit around that flute so you can generate hot water at the same time your making charcoal that has brass quick connectors so you can detatch the heat exchange easily. ; )

I’m trying to understand the holes in the pipe. My understanding is you want the wood gases to be expelled into the outer flame. If your holes are outside of the retort the wood gases are contained but if inside the retort they can not reach the fire. Can you explain where the holes in the pipe are located after you’ve welded the top? Thank you

The holes are about an inch or two up from the bottom of the wood can. Wood gas collects in the can, eventually exiting into the flue where there's enough hot oxygen to ignite it. It combusts in the flu insid the can, heating it further.

Hi Diego. Nice work mate. Can you tell me what your ratio of burnt wood is to charcoal? How much wood in pounds do you have to burn to create x amount of pounds of charcoal? Thanks.

I've done a couple small scale tests and i was able to get roughly one third of the weight in charcoaI compaired to the wood that went in. If the wood isnt dry, the ratio will be different. I have a couple books on charcoal production that were very helpful, but Lindsay publications unfortunately is no longer in business.

@@peerno from all of my personal tests and materials that i have read, if your "barrel or container" is built safely and correctly for the purposes of making charcoal (please be sure to follow any applicable laws and be safe), this container is typically called a charcoal kiln even though it is technically a still used for wood. anyway, the concept is to heat wood in the container without letting air get into the container. the process is typically known as destructive distillation. you would be heating wood in a container that has a single vent to allow the gasses/vapors to escape. some of the gas is carbon dioxide, some is water vapor, some is methyl alcohol (the same stuff that keeps windshield wiper fluid from freezing) and a few other vapors. these vapors are flammable and methyl alcohol is toxic so please be extra careful with that. anyway, i say all of that to say this; the wood becomes charcoal when all of those gasses are removed from the wood. if you start your charcoal kiln with the wood inside, those chemicals in the wood will basically boil and vent out in the form of vapor. when the heat is still going strong but the vapors have stopped, the volatile chemicals have been removed and you have charcoal inside of your charcoal kiln.

Yes, at 3:12 he explains how the wood gas helps raise the temperature and make the process more efficient. Retort refers to using the byproduct of the heating wood, wood gas, to speed the process up.

wow, your idea is so simple and effective. When I build mine I am going to put the holes in the bottom of the can instead of in the chimney on the theory that releasing the gas underneath will transfer more heat to the wood. What do you think Diego?

The holes in the chimney are inside the retort. This is the only way for the water vapor in the wood to escape. It’s brilliant.

nice job. I'm looking to build a retort as simply as possible with available materials. I've made charcoal for years but have never used the gas byproduct to aid the primary heat source. Once the wood starts offgasing do you stop adding wood to the burner down below. I mean does the gas take over as the sole heat source to complete the pyrolysis of the wood? Your design is at the top of the list from what I've seen. Simple yet effective. Nice looking charcoal

Depends of the wood, if it is dryed wood or if it still contains moisture. The weight loss will go arround 90 to 98% of the original weight.

The design is good but wasteful of the wood gas being burned off via chimney. More efficient design would be to re-direct the wood gas directly to the fire chamber for secondary burn during pyrolysis stage effectively becoming self fuelling from then on
