Slightly advanced question here, but did you route the truss rod channel the full length of the rod? If so, what keeps the truss rod from pushing the skunk stripe out of the slot? Do you just trust the glue to hold? I'd like to make some one piece necks but with superior double-action truss rods, so I don't have to tinker with curved rod channels and angled access holes... but the rod popping out of the channel is my main concern.
@endysdoodoo4 жыл бұрын
The glue joint is stronger then the wood itself

Joey Zahariuk Thanks for the insight! I’m actually working on skipping the skunk stripe altogether. Building a machine to drill the length of the neck for insertion of the truss rod, using a self centering gundrill bit.
@endysdoodoo4 жыл бұрын
@@ForestCinema good luck most guys that install these truss rods rout for the Rod itself then stop and route a wider router for the nut portion. He did one channel this was obvious directed at the beginner builder showing how it can be done easily with minimal tools. I've watched all of Bigds videos and he's super talented luthier. People were trying to cut him down here and to me this is one of my favorite videos he has done. Not everyone has a fully functional workshop with thousands of dollars of tools and machinery. Most of us enjoy making our own instruments and are using basic tools to do the job. Thats why this series is one of my favorites.

You could have stopped the truss rod channel 1/2" away from the heel and drilled the counterbore so it looked factory. That's how I install hotrod truss rods, give it a shot buds it's not hard to do. Plus then it looks way more professional!

This is done terribly. You said strat neck but strat necks use curved truss rod channels as well as skunk stripes they also only use single action truss rods and they don't route all the way for the channel. They drill 3 degrees on both ends and they hold the truss rod in at an angle. This video is a just a sign of laziness maybe you should actually try making a neck worth using.
@klinenator8 жыл бұрын

This guy is doing this with limited hand tools showing that it can be done at home with limited tools. The truss rod he uses is standard in today's necks and like others said doesn't need to be angled.
