Building A String Algae Ecosphere - (With Dwarf Amphipods)

In this video we build an ecosphere from a raised garden pond I've had for several years. It contains a lot of organisms I haven't had in my ecospheres before, including dwarf amphipods, strange daphnia and worms. I also spotted a weird bladder snail, that seemed to be harboring some form of mutation which causes its body to grow back over the shell.
This ecosphere is planned specifically for string algae (filamentous algae). I imagine in time it will spread completely within the jar. This ecosphere also contains a lot of organic matter such as branches and dead leaves. In the pond I used to create this ecosphere algae and dead leaves completely covered the surface. I was surprised to find such interesting life persisting underneath.
I feel as though there are many other organisms present within this ecosphere that I have failed to capture on film. Stay tuned for update videos as I'm sure they will make appearances in future videos.

I did some research and later discovered the bladder snail wasn't Physella acuta, but actually Physa fontinalis. This explains the flesh growing over the shell. Sorry for the mistake. The latin name was labeled correctly in later videos.

I had an idea, instead of having a house with a predictable fishbowl, having like a big glass cylinder with an ecosphere inside. You could see how life progresses as years comes by, and stare for hours. And as a bonus, the ecosphere would maintain itself, so no worries when going on a vacation or else.

Now I wonder how big an ecosphere should be to support at least 1 vertebrate species.
@sergeantsharkseant
@sergeantsharkseant 2 жыл бұрын
@@Thaidory it depends I guess. I once had a small aquarium which incompletely neglected except for the light and feeding like once a month. And it was completely overfilled with guppies (I actually had a plan for the aquarium to look nice but a friend gave my mother these fish and there they were and they wer ugly and Bree’s like whatever but the point is it was a rather small aquarium but somehow these fuckers survived and were fat despite my almost utter neglect of them. So yeah I am pretty sure if you threw these fuckers in a slightly bigger jar like these they would likely thrive. It really depends on the size of the fish and the fish
