I use an empty Arteza fineliner tin that I spray painted gold. It holds 114 half pans and I have it filled with Schmincke, Holbein, WN, DS, Rembrandt, and Roman Szmal. 10/10, sparks joy.

you are a man after my own heart! how much fun to arrange and rearrange one's paint collection. I have 2 teaching palettes (one being a round color wheel), a floral, a tiny travel palette made from a Bob Ross mint tin, Qor palette, palette of kid safe colors for the grandkids, and my "perfect palette" -all nontoxic, transparent, single pigment paints, etc.

Quick question- how do you rate the Qor brand of paints, I’ve heard good things and am about to invest in a new set of watercolours, I’ve been using Windsor and Newtown professional how would you think Qor perform in comparison?

Hi Mark, this is another wonderful video on making your palette. When I first opened it I had to leave the desk for a bit and half of the thumbnail was covered by another window. So my partner asked about "how to build a Super Pal" and it made us laugh. Creative advice on how to make friends! :D You did not disapoint with your video though and I love how you manage to fit more pans into your palettes. I'm very curious what color selection you chose to include. :) Have a great day!

Thank you, my friend! To build a super pal, by the way, it starts with respect, honesty, and love. That's how I build a super pal, anyway! lol!! As for the color selection I chose, I assume you mean which paints, right? I chose to make a Mission Gold Pure Pigment palette. I've only used them out of the tube, so it felt about time to release them into the wild of my palette collection. And I'm so happy I did! I've enjoyed them for a long time from the tube, but this is just so much more convenient!

@@MDCampbell Thanks for ther super pal tutorial! I agree that love, honesty and respect are the best way to build any meaningful relationship in life. :) (and also just the best way to treat people) Yes, I meant which paints. The Mission Gold Pure Pigment set is great, I have it in a palette too and just love it. Good choice! Have a great day!

Hi Mark, I remake some of my palettes also and what I find very handy is to get the plastic crafters use to make stencils with. I glue it onto a piece of foam board then put the glue/double sided tape (sookwang is the best) the pans on it. The winner is, is that the stencil stuff is plastic and it won't warp if it gets wet. I also, rather than using ribbon use the stencil material as handles to pull the paints out all at once if need be. Kristy says what she does when pouring her palettes with tubes is to put a magnet in before starting the pour. That way the palettes don't move and I'm pretty sure they won't rust any because the ones I use haven't, however I haven't tried that trick yet. I think it is brilliant. As I sit here and paint am very much enjoying your videos. Thank you. I am back to watercolor the last 5 years or so did a lot in HS but back then I was into oil. Then I discovered pastels and colored pencils.(Some of my prismacolors are almost 50 years old, bk then I don't think they came in sets). And to my joy I find that they are water soluble so can be used as paint.

Fun to see. I have a big tin with pans of every paint I have. Then I swap on in my couple of twelve pan tins when I want. So far it is working well. But I am so slow at learning watercolor it is not all that tested. Thank you for the video.

Thank you for sharing the big tin modification; I am growing out of my tins so this will be a great solution to add in all the extra pans.

What great information! I have pondered and pondered on how you got those pans to stay flat when they were laid over the bottom mixing tray portion of the palette! Thank you for the ingenious idea 😮!!

I did the same thing with my Meeden palette, except I simply used pliers to pull out the strips of clips from the metal tray and then adhered magnets to the bottoms of the pans. It works beautifully. Thanks for showing all of your palettes over the years, that was fun!

Hi Mark! I love those Meeden tins, but I'd miss the extra fold out mixing tray if I removed it. I always replace the metal tray that holds the pans with a piece of foam core or Coroplast, and hold my pans in place with poster putty. I roll up a bit of paper towel and stuff into any gaps between the pans. It gives me a place to blot my brush, and it's easy to replace the paper towel as needed. I write the paint name/brand abbreviation on the pan with a fine point Sharpie.

I love learning that there's so many of us out there who enjoy doing this kind of "modding." I look at the sets I have and they make me very happy, yet for some weird reason... I still want another. And another. lol! Thank you for your feedback on this. Always good to hear from you and I hope all is well! ~ Mark

MMMM so many pans! A few months back I got one of the "square" Schmincke tins which came with 9 full pans, but just by taking the insert out (because the bottom is flat) it actually fits up to 18 full + 2 half pans or any combo thereof. I've used magnet tape but it is bad news if you drop it LOL. I took it to Lake Tahoe a couple weeks ago! Had a lot of fun painting. Love how you used the box, which was perfect for watercolor. If you order from A. Gallo again try some of the Tintoretto brushes, especially the synthetic squirrel long liners, they are exceptional! (Well I love expressive free painting, so perhaps they won't be your cup of tea, but they have other fibers and types and Tintoretto brushes are impressing me GREATLY!!)

Too funny, I have one of those square Schmincke tins, too! Used it for a while until I moved the Schmincke to the larger palette. As for A. Gallo, yes, I enjoy the Tintoretto brush I got when I got the set I have (it was included). I've been holding back on buying more A. Gallo for a while, but I'm getting itchy to grow my current set. lol! I think I'm due for a shopping trip soon! Stay well and thank you! ~ Mark

@@MDCampbell When they restocked last weekend I made my first order - mostly for brushes and also got a nice pencil case. Very hard to get the full line of Tintoretto brushes in the US. I'm not a big fan of half pans, or rosemary, but I couldn't help throwing in a YinMin blue and a PR 259 Ultramarine Pink, because I'm a pigment nerd!!

My 83 colors are in a QoR 24 color tube box. I painted the lid with QoR watercolor ground and then painted on the box so my tin is unique. I love it. I use dtcttape to secure the pans still removable but never coming out unless I want them to

hi there! i did the same with my Roman Szmall wooden box, i went from 36 to 49 full pans! 🥰Now im wondering if i can put my collection of Daniel Smith in the cover, expanding the box to hold 98 full pans...🤔 ahhh, so much fun to have with watercolors! looks like you could do the same with your Wicker Man box... just saying! 🤣

I had a spare palette and modified the 24 half pan Schmincke Palette that I've been using for years. I removed the metal bars that hold the pans and put magnet tape unter the pans to hold them in place.

I always remove the flap on tins too! First thing I do!! Have you seen Kimberly Crick's video where she puts over 100 pans in a Rembrandt 24 well pallette? I actually have that one, and it fits hake brushes in it's original form. She took out the insert.....

Hi Jenn W! I saw her video about the Paul Reubens palette fitting a ridiculous amount of pans in it using two inner trays. For me, I wouldn't like two trays for the same reason I don't like the foldout palette (the one I remove in the video). Takes up too much space, though I really love the number of pans you can fit. Amazing! Thank you!

Thank you, A Little Creative! That last palette is my largest tin at about 12 inches long, 5 inches tall, and a 2 inch depth. It's also very strong, as it was originally a tin that held paint tubes. But, once removing the tubes and pulling out the plastic, it could easily accommodate 84 half pans, easily. I can't even put my head around that much paint! wow! :)

When I modified a meeden palette to hold more full pans, what I did was I used my dremel on the bottom of the removable tray to grind away the rivets holding the clips in place. It took a little finagling, but I got them all off and was able to fit et full pans on the original metal tray, which meant I could hold them in place with little neodymium magnets I glued to the bottom of each pan (the kind they sell at hobby stores for models).
