When information is outdated or no longer useful, we can benefit "unlearning" what we know and finding new information to promote growth. "Unlearning" was a BIG part of my journey, so I thought I'd share.

Hullo Mark, Thanks for a wonderful and thoughtful video! I have recently (Within the last year or so) started to learn or discover the medium of soft pastels! Once I got past the dusty or dirty aspect I am amazed at how much I still need to learn about creating art! I know that when using a new medium it is so important to keep that open mind and truly being open to learning in every aspect of our Art journey, Thanks for a wonderful reminder to staying open to learning and new thoughts too!

Hi Mark, I am thinking that in this day of the web, you would not only need to unlearn how to draw, but unlearn the learned from the web based baggage that is out there now. From the web I have learned that I must hate my art (why?), I should be afraid of starting a new sketchbook because I might mess up the first page, thereby ruining the whole thing (uh ...?), and every page in every sketchbook must be perfect, and mus be somehow covered if not (uh, no ...!). This actually would be beneficial on so many levels, though letting go my preformed notions of how to draw sounds seriously difficult. That must have been quite an ordeal you went through. People do tend to be our own worst enemies in things, and I note we have an incredible capacity of getting in out own way. This would be a marvelous way to circumvent that. As always, thank you for a thought provoking video.

Fun to see the return of the coffee break in your videos. Lots to think about on unlearning. I'm glad you showed that sketchbook with cut out art from your old sketchbooks. It was one of the first videos I watched by you. At the time I was horrified by the idea of cutting up an old sketchbook. Now I'm thinking it might be a good start for unlearning. Thanks for the inspiration!

this advice is the worse advice and best. i wouldnt give it to anyone though just like young students who mess up and then just say its abstract, or cant draw very well so dont learn and say its just their style telling people to unlearn everything and perspective. thats such a dangous idea that might really mess with progress. i get what your saying but i disagree. you should say "try drawing by ignoring all the rules, be free from all you know, those colour rules ect" then USE this freedom and creatvity in the more rigid rule based world.
