Building a Trailer for Overlanding: The Wakamper

Lately I've been spending a majority of my Saturdays helping my friend "Waka" build his new overlanding trailer. I'll try and record continued progress footage for future videos, and I'll definitely have Waka do a walk-around tour of it when it's all completed!

I built mine so that my camper cabin completely lifts off and reveals a diamond plate flatbed 5x8 utility trailer. I have a swivel based 1000lb extendable hydraulic crane that is also removable from the trailer tongue but is used to load & lift off the Camper cabin as well as any heavy cargo i am loading onto the flatbed trailer. Works awesome

What material are you using for the camper frame? Steel or Alloy?

Nice build!! What axle was used? I am having a hard time finding a torsion axle that with a 5 on 5 bot pattern with brakes so I can match my Jeep 35" wheel and tire combination.

In hind sight, the torsion axle was a terrible idea for on off-road trailer. The washboard roads just absolutely beat the heck out of the internal rubber. In addition to that, there's just very little dampening, so every bump causes the trailer to bounce, sometimes the trailer has gotten like 3-4 inches of air. No bueno. One axle failed on the trailers first big trip (2k miles in Baja, MX). Waka is working on designing a new independent coil suspension like I have on my Turtleback. We'll hopefully be building that in the near future (and i'll be sure to video the process).

The wood was prefinisjed with clear coat, and then the raptor liner was sprayed on top of that which adds an extremely durable weather proof layer or protection. Some areas were also additionally sealed with marine caulk ahead of time
