I spent 40 years building log and timber frame structures. Here's a tip about saws and axes. Sharpening a saw, getting the teeth reset and sharpening is a lengthy process and requires you to carry more tools for that job. Tree bark collects dust that can be powdered rock. It can even contain small pebbles. Even a Silky saw will get dull really fast. before you take saw to ANY piece of wood, use your axe to remove the bark where you want to cut. Axes are a lot easier to sharpen.

Nice...looking forward to seeing the whole series. I was camping on my dad's off grid land the first time after he passed away, and it had a lot of bears around from the garbage not being taken care of. I used my tie down straps from my trunk as high as I could get them, and then used the random plywood he had around to make a platform on top of it. Put the tent up there, and now I'm obsessed with perfecting a raised sleeping area for camping. It just feels so much safer for a lone woman in the woods.

Side note in historical builds they sometimes charred the surface on wood that goes into the ground, probably to avoid the wood from rotting away. For a build like this just rotate the parts of the logs that goes into the ground over a fire and they will last a lot longer. Side note thanks for the nice videos :)

Corporal Kelly, I am not a super experienced bush-Crafter but if you need put a point on a stick after the first section of material is removed rotate the stick 90 degrees rather than 180 degrees. That way you are not expending energy cutting through the full thickness of your stick a second time. I find it faster top. Again, a suggestion, not criticism, from a 66 year old that has made many thousand tent pegs but still struggles with bow drill fires.

My motto has been "if its good enough for corporal its good enough for me." That being said a long 15 min gear review isn't needed. What you did in this video was awesome. That is a nice looking beginning to a shelter off the ground and the Marines must have taught you so much while you was in the service. I know about 29 Palms as I spent many days there working with the Marines while on TDY tours. The Air Force put us up in the local motel downtown and we drove back and forth to the base. I always wondered what that cast iron pot in one area was used for other than to heat water there on that base? I also spent time at Camp Pendleton as well working there to load Marine equipment which was shipped out.

I think it's a good idea to talk about the equipment a little every now and again. You will continue to have an influx of new viewers who are a variety of stages of their education. So a little refresher now and again is a good idea. I have one of the Council Tool axes, but I think it's the next step up (Camp Axe?). It will lash to the outside of the pack and has a little more swing with the slightly longer handle, but is also small enough to use as a carver. Like you, I've seen a lot of stupid with edged tools. My FiL taught me how to use an axe when I was a young man. He was very careful but very good. Those Silky Boy saws are the bomb! Thank you for what you do.

I also cringe when I see someone swing a short handled axe. Yet, when I go my first one, longer ago than I care share, I started to swing it at a log to split it and my Scoutmaster went ballistic. He showed me that you use it as a wedge and strike it with a log. Very efficient, I'm sure some can say they are able to swing a 14" handle and split wood...I've never done it and I've never had a blade bounce of wood to hurt me. Very good advice Corp!

Tree fort or tree stand? With a slightly different design and a high stool I could shoot my longbow from that. I only have a few more years of climbing ladders like that. I would sure like a second deer before I wuss out. Deer ribs are awful yummy.

Sir, thank you for your service. I am a lady in my seventies. So going outdoors intentionally is out of the question. Problem is, I love learning, just in case. May I know what kind of saw were you using? I bought similar to that, but my husband said it works only when it's pushed. I also have the one that looks like chains. I don't like it. They laughed at me. But it's okey. I know some of how to make fires. Anyway, tha k you.
