In the video I see one thing missing a table a waist height table would have been perfect for chopping those vegetables and other tasks you can use your draw knife flatten one surface of all the sticks to make a flat table top somewhat flat

thanks for the video as always .your turf roof is exhibiting signs of overloading as is witnessed by the syaying of the structure while placing your turf on it.. even with the 2 added posts and i feel you need to add some cross braceing and possibly more . as you know there is a lot of weight up there which presents a danger should it decide it has surpassed its strength of materials. again thanks for the video and looking forward to more

I think once the roots have had time to grow a little they will basically sew themselves into a single mass. That should help with rain leaks and any sliding.

You and your Father are progressing amazingly well in your shelter building skills: those hurdles are a major step forward, and anyone with the proper 'willowy' shoots can benefit from your experience. The turf roof seems to build quickly. Viewers who liked your 'Nordic' stove system will LOVE your Dad's pallet wood and brick backyard 'tackle shack. Well, I did! Your use of chopped canned tomatoes, added into chili powder, leads me to say that I use a 'natural tasting', high end tomato concentrate in my cooking these days. In North America, our chili powder runs more to the red hues of spices. As always, your work makes me hunger for THAT dish and for being outdoors.

It's very common for many American families to have cast iron inherited for several generations. If it has feet it's a camp oven. It actually bakes very well. Our most famous brand is Lodge. In years past iron deficiency was ameliorated by leaching from the pot or pan, so the tomatoes were less of an issue. Because your lid has feet it probably can be used upside down as a griddle. Love the build. Best wishes for your wife and coming baby.

Growing up in Texas, my friends and I tried to make a “sod “ and wood camp house. It sucked! 🤷🏻‍♂️😂. We were very proficient at laying a long log in the low branch of a tree and building a shelter off the log that would sleep 3-5 boys. It’s a treat to see your methods come to life that we dreamt about as kids. Keep on keepin’ on mate!

I have made chili in Texas with stew beef, chorizo sausage, and sauteed & chopped rattlesnake florets ... seven different beans, chopped chili peppers, sugar, and jalepenos. Masa flour to thicken and all cooked in the dutch oven, just like yours. It was a winner.

I've used, almost daily, cast iron cookware for about 40 years. I cook EVERYTHING with them....they are brilliant. You are correct, each time you use them, wash in hot soapy water, rinse, cloth dry then dry thoroughly on or in heat with an OVERALL... ( handle and all) smear of fat..pref sat fat not veg oil in order to keep the cast iron in fab condition. Video fab as per. Hope Emma and baby are doing grand. Love. x

TA-O, here's a cooking tip for you: When you put in your chili powder first pull the meat to the high-side of the pot so that the juices go to the low-side. Then add your chili powder to the juices so that you can bloom the flavors of the chili powder before mixing it into the ground beef. It really works well.

Another great option for doing stews is put all your dry ingredients together in a bag, so when you arrive, just sear your meat an water and drop in those dry ingredients. You can also bring veggies along with you that are pre-cut. We know how much work you guys put into building these awesome things, and hard work is always deserving of hot food.

There is a u-tube video about how Icelandic turf homes were made using large volcanic rocks layered with turf between. They would take them apart maybe every 50-60 years or so and stack new turf between the rock layer by layer until the building was completed. Yours is looking pretty good. The food looks yummy. Stay warm!

You'll need to put birch bark underneath the sod as the turf doesn't act as waterproofing. It was traditionally used as a weight to keep birch bark anchored and to add a insulative element. Really not that waterproof, I've tried.

Draw knife tip: when stripping the logs, if you angle the blade it will perform better... instead of holding your hands at 9 and 3 (which is perfectly acceptable by the way) shift your hands closer to 10 and 4 or 8 and 2 then when you draw the knife it will tend to move in more of a slicing motion and will cut better, it will also use more of the blade surface which means your not just use one section of the blade Mortise and Tenon tip: I noticed you were using the draw knife to create the shoulder for your mortises, you could speed that process up and make it a little easier for yourself by using your folding saw to cut the width and depth of the shoulder and then use your chisel to knock out the wood and end up with a nice flat shoulder to start cutting a mortise into

These are my favorite stick to your ribs winter foods , chicken and dumplings , chilly , beef roast with potato’s carrots and onion , chilly with spaghetti , baked Mac n cheese , salmon patties with mustard on whole wheat bread , grilled cheese with tomato inside of the grilled cheese with a hot bowl of tomato soup with a big spoon full of butter with salt & pepper , pizza casserole , spaghetti and meatballs with garlic bread , homemade vegetable soup chunky , .

Kudos to your Dad for the poppy! We cannot allow ourselves, nor the generations who follow, to forget. Too many people won’t bother with the poppy because it makes them uncomfortable. Really? Well, good for your Dad!! We have the same thing here in the US. I love watching the building you do! It’s great fun to see the different styles you choose and what remains the same, what changes subtly, and what is outright tipped on its head! Some may be your lessons learned. I believe that the mortise and tenon not going all the way through is one of these? With regards to the structure now, it seems that the door should be on the right. The short roof side would be used for storage of goods, and having it come in the door and settle would be best. I know that you don’t want to daub the hurdles, what about impregnating a canvas with water and clay, then hanging that, or strips/scraps, on the inside? Then white wash it (limestone dust, water) to have better lighting... just a thought. I love your channel!! See you in the next video soon! Keep us updated on baby!

nice to hear/see you warming the mess tin, as an ex army chef, always willing to warm up mess tins when asked, unfortunately one poor squaddie addressed me as cookie, one wet cold excercise in wales, to warm his mess tin up, so took it and heated the handle up, gave it back to him and reminded him to call me chef, or Cpl never addressed me or my fellow chefs as cookie again......

Now that's what i call a fantastic Lean-To! Though the sod roof is heavy to begin with, I would be a bit worried in the event of a freakish snow storm like what happened last year, that could have the potential to overload the roof structure beyond it's load bearing. I believe that you guys should prepare additional bracing for every two foot of horizontal beams, if you intend to see it still standing in the spring or at a minimum of every 3 feet of beam span. Other than that, you guys have once again done an outstanding job!! That chilli is an absolute must for wet and cold weather! You've done a mighty fine job and even fora slightly smaller project, it's a mighty fine one in deed!!! Thank-You TAO!!

I bet almost all of that grass grows back next year! Most grasses are quite resilient and being that you harvested it later in the year, while it's switching from foliage growing mode to root growing mode, you should have relatively decent root structure by next May/June.

Fun fact, if I remember correctly, the name Dutch oven comes from a misunderstanding. In origin it´s german, which, as you might know, is in German "deutsch". Due to the sound of it, if you don´t say it right, the name Dutch oven came to life.

Honestly, a thin layer of thatch under the turf might do some good, it's lightweight in addition to adding a bit more rain protection it would help keep some of the dirt from breaking off underneath and slipping through the weave and give something else for the roots to grip too.
