I've seen some of Bo's workout routine. Hes training a lot in being explosive/ strong/ balanced. I think many youth coaches have to remember the age of your student. Simple drills like balancing on 1 leg or any variation go a long way. Skaters are my favorite and kids seem to like them. I beleive all kids should be doing body squats everday at a minimum.

Amazing insight as always Ron! For kids that have a small (or almost no stride approach) naturally and don’t have a lot of power do you recommend trying to introduce a bigger leg kick (particularly in practice/drills) to develop move/feel? Love the back pocket cue!

Hey Patrick, honestly this depends on the player. I would start by trying to create slightly more internal rotation of the hips. A leg kick can be so challenging for youth hitters. Timing that up is hard :) for the typical 8-12 yr old. Not impossible, but hard.

when internally rotating, is it just the lower half, or the upper half also?

hey ron i have a question for you thats been bugging me lately since ive lost the feel for the internal rotation should i think of rotating my front hip around the the back side or turn my back hip at the pitcher or is the mixture of both?

Ron, I like the vid. To what extent do you think bat drag is caused by rotating shoulders before the hip? If a young player is taught to move hips first doesn’t the lead hand and arm have a better path to the slot?
@RonSullivanHitting4 жыл бұрын
In my experience, I don't see shoulders rotating before the hips with young players as a first move. I see most players (8-12 range) that drag the bat with their entire body to compensate for lack of strength and a poor understanding in terms of approach overall. To your specific question, I don't teach it that way but there is more than one way to skin a cat. I know a lot of great coaches that are hips then hands guys, I take a little different approach than that fundamentally with kids learning the game. Thanks for commenting sir!

@@RonSullivanHitting it’s a great drill. I like the idea of slowing lowering tee and grip on the bat. Clever.

Is the player manually creating internal rotation of the hips? Or is it simply a result of moving your weight back (loading) to go forward?
@RonSullivanHitting4 жыл бұрын
This player has a trigger move that activates the internal rotation of the hips. I think you can generate internal rotation by loading properly but generally, kids keep their hips neutral in the loading process.

It is similar to winding up for a punch or to kick a ball.

@@brianmelancon1294 Yes I think it is a much natural response than how we normally treat it! Thanks for commenting

Does your lshitting program teach this or is it all top hand arm teaching. Trying to get my daughter to maintain that stretch around the rear hip socket has been near impossible. I'd like some help.

@@johndeal3313 We graduate from isolation drills from the ground to what I call dynamic balance drills to their feet. Ultimately we do work on the dynamic balance drill with a trigger move to introduce the internal rotation of the hips.
