My son is 10, been playing since he was 4. True lefty. Has played club ball for 2 years. I’ve always taught him as our overall approach as a lefty we want to drive the ball to left center. Obviously he can pull and drive oppo hard but as we work and as I’ve progressed him we always think “left center” as a mental cue. When he was 9 I started noticing he was scissoring. Not every hit but a good amount. I believe I’m pretty educated on hitting and have trained him well. Always leads the team with hits every year by far. But my ignorance came through with scissoring. I read anything I can get my hands on with hitting, I watch videos and am always open to learning. Your explanation of why scissoring happens was the clearest and simplest I’ve ever heard or read. Great video Coach.

This video needed to happen! Well done, Ron. The interweb is clamoring over this back leg thing. The fact that, for those players that do "scissor", they don't do it every pitch tells me that it can be viewed as an adjustment to a pitch. I think this is a safer assumption that calling it the secret sauce.

There is another element to this as well. The back kick (scissor) is a balance mechanism that the nervous system is engaging to kick the hitter from falling. With all the power, there would be no way to avoid falling over without a counter lever. It isn’t intended or conscious but a by product of a lot of power around the axis. Our nervous system is designed to keep us safe and keep us vertical. Great video!

Ron you are my guy! Simply the best when it comes to explaining complicated things to us "dads" that want our kids to improve. I have hit my kid with so much technical stuff in the past he almost shut down on me. This video and the video on the 5 and 7 o' clock position is easy to understand and explain while still keeping it fun. To me, you sir are the salt of the earth!

Hey Ron, I noticed you don't have many videos on timing. More specifically, whento stride. At pitcher's forward motion or his arm coming forward? If you do, can you please point me towards them. If not, I would love your take on it, or maybe a video analysis. Thanks, keep up the great work.

Scissor kicking is a manifestation of stride direction that’s it. No need to complicate things. You stride closed or Cross toward the plate you will scissor kick and that comes from always trying to go oppo

Great video, but when u start talking about Ohtani at around the 8 minute mark, do u think Ohtani is losing a lot of power from lack of upper and lower body seperation?

Hi Ron, I love your approach and videos. Here's my question : When I'm about to release the barrel and whip my wrists, should my hands always be in the same spot and only the knob direction changes depending on pitch location or should they be a little closer to my body on an inside pitch and a little more away on an outside pitch, as long as they always stay in front of the back elbow? Thanks so much! I really need an answer for this

If have a batting stance where you start with your back foot like in your t-work, does that accomplish the same scissoring in your at bat?

Sorry if there was any confusion around this. I was trying to point out the characteristic of players that do scissor and not necessarily that if you go opposite way that you will. There is a consistent balance point that Freeman gets to that was probably stressed when he was growing up. Thanks for the question

Another great video by a great, 'old' guy! Or is that old, great guy? Hey, I am going to be in your area for about 24 hours this weekend. Driving out on Friday to drop off some stuff to the girls and then on to AL for Thanksgiving with the family. Wish we had time to stop by and see yall. Our middle son, the baseball phenom will be with us. Would be great to see you, but probably won't have enough time. Let's chat soon and talk some hitting. Get that dialogue going on a few crazy thoughts I have had lately...golf swing too! Cheers.
