One of the things I love so much about your and Brookes videos is that, even though I recognize that you both have years of experience doing this type of work, I always leave feeling like it's possible even for someone like me, who didn't own a power drill until her late 30s and who has never even built a birdhouse. In fact, I think I'm gonna go ahead and start that birdhouse this weekend. ❤️ Gotta start somewhere.

Built a birdhouse in highschool carpentry class, the paint job is ugly plain brown but it works & sits on my parents property to this day, doing its job for the birds. I guess the brown kinda works too bc it blends in with the woods behind it That & the cutting board I made in that class, actually looks pretty beautiful considering it was made by an amateur (dad knows & has a lot of tools & taught me stuff all as I grew up anytime he had a project & also had a great carpentry teacher) to this day parents still have that cutting board (never used) as a display piece in the kitchen. It’d work fine as a cutting board, they just don’t want knife marks in it & I appreciate that they want to keep something I handmade & gave them like that

After my discharge from the USAF in 1976 I stayed in a 24 x 20 two story log cabin north of Anchorage. I was the nanny for three kids whose father blew off his hand blowing stumps with old dynamite. The only way in was by a 17’ Jon boat with a 70 hp jet outboard. The cabin had been built in the 1930’s by a mink rancher of spruce logs. I spent 2 months babysitting, smoking salmon, and cutting trees for a 20 x 16 addition on the cabin. When fall came I left for Anchorage and left Alaska in October as the termination dust started falling, after three years in Alaska I was done with the bloody cold😊. Great experiences though. Enjoyed your video a lot, thanks, and good luck in your venture.

@Trantor The Troll breathing issues? Is it from pollution? Dust? Pollen? Figure it out and find the right spot. But if your health is really that bad off maybe off grid isnt for you.
@henriklarsson52213 жыл бұрын
@Trantor The Troll There was a time before the internet when people had fun anyways... ^)^ But in any case, they clearly have access to internet since the videos keep coming. Or they drive to town to load them up. And for electricity they have solar and mobile batteries that stores power, for LED lights, a radio, computer, phone etc. Or a diesel-driven generator when you need it. If it is pollen you have problem with then living of grid in the spring would be hard, but you still have the late summer, autumn and winter without pollen. And there exists filters for homes that can help clear the air. There is even cheap "nose-filters" that clears 99% of pollen in the air. Otherwise, if it is not pollen, then the air of the woods should be good for you. I think they work from time to time in seasonal work(i´ve heard them mention it). But both have a income from YT now also, so i guess their workload outside YT has gone down. cheers

Been a carpenter over 40 years. There's the way you have to build things in cities with inspector's, building codes, big box stores just around the corner and all that; then there's the way to build things out away from amenities like power sources, running water and so forth, using what's available... including common sense. Yours is a great example of the latter; a very fine example of ingenuity, hard work and determination. I salute you both. By the way, you get extra credit for being a decent human being that won't resort to showing pictures of scantily clad women just to draw cyber pervs to their site.

I build the storage sheds, the deer, cattle, sheep and goat yards and build a cottage. People asked me where did I learn how to do all this. The answer is, 20 years in the army, ability to follow written instruction, good public library and ability to ask neighbours questions on “ how and why and when”. In our part of the southern world we call it “the number 8 mentality”, there is nothing that can’t be fixed with a No. 8 wire. Learn something from your mistakes and plan ahead. Easy as! Harera mate.

Pretty awesome. In Finland we have built most of the log cabins using horisontal logs for hundreds of years, but we actually have some commercially built vertical log cabins too. Vertical logs have their pros and cons compared to traditional horisontal logs, but the oldtimers in Finland didn't have such power tools and screws. Since they had only an axe + manual drill + wood stick anchors between the logs, horisontal logs were a natural choice under their constraints.

I've watched many, many "professional" videos but yours actually makes me feel like I could really do it. Thank you for that, keeping it simple.

I enjoy watching your KZbin videos, and especially like the way you describe building Rurfs. I remember while serving with the British Army in Belize in Central America, meeting a group of American tourists in a hotel restaurant, one of whom commented on our strange accents. Being understood is always the most important thing, and it was obvious you were talking about the roof. Keep up the good work.

“I believe we are designed to make stuff, to create stuff”... couldn’t agree more. I like your attitude it matches with ours about the creative human spirit. We use what we have around us and do our best though it may be unconventional. And so what. If it works, great. If not, fix or re-design and build again. Every mistake or lack of perfect result is opportunity to improve, to learn, and be humbled.

I love watching you and Brooke build. You were talking about having roof on before walks were in. Most home builder companies do that. The roof goes on as soon as framers have it framed. I've been picking up free lumber for 40 years at new home building sites. They have massive scrap piles that are full of 2 x 4s, 2 x 6s, 2 x 12s, tyvek, shingles, all for the asking.

There is a reason this has 7 million views....you guys are awesome. If I may, something to consider on your kitchen cabinets. I actually use this on homes, because "crafted" cabinets are not necessary. Instead of side panel/back panel plywood, with toe kicks, etc, just use scrap 2x4 or whatever to create partitions. No need for plywood at all. Use the 1x material as you so expertly did on your roof to stabilize it. Basically, you end up with a hollow skeleton under the counter and behind the cabinet fronts. Kind of similar to how you made the boxes to pour your footings. Slap the decorative stiles to the scrap 2x4 on the front face. The key to this method is to always use drawers for the whole space. Deep drawers at the bottoms, etc. You just attach the drawer guides to scrap 2x4 partitions, and build the drawers and drawer fronts as you so awesomely demonstrated. You could go without the drawers too. This makes access to your stuff easier, and provides wide open/accessible "dead" space in the back to hide stuff, run electrical, etc etc. And you don't need ANY plywood for the bottom, sides, or backs of your cabinets.

I can watch these videos forever.... The content in word and photography is incredible. The forward driving yet meandering, original music extraordinary, and Dave's voice is the best narration voice ever. The personable way he tells a story has me riveted. He has a certain surety and incredible kindness in his voice. Dave Whipple needs to be narrate ALL of the HGTV, Animal Planet shows. Just another talent this dude possesses. Go Dave! Thanks for being so radical.

Those flatlanders who have one season really have no idea what they're missing. I cherish those winter days when after a hard days work, or a hard day of play, when it's getting dark and the wind is howling, a snowstorm on the way, there is just nothing better than getting to your cabin, lighting a fire, and kicking back. I could not live without my 4 seasons, even though the older I get, the less I like those bitter cold days and nights when you have to go out in it.
