As a non-technical founder, Tara Reed built Kollecto's app without writing a single line of code. Tara frequently blogs about how to 'build without code' and has inspired hundreds of non-technical to founders to launch their own apps, using what she calls a 'code-free toolkit'.

This was so Inspiring. There are developers who are commenting that this is "bad advice" because it doesn't take into consideration all that could go wrong if you don't know how to use code, which is why you so desperately need an actual app developer. This is (and still is) the same argument that website designers had re the use of software programs that allow you to design and build your own site from scratch or using templates. Website building software is now simple and a huge industry. I absolutely applaud this young woman. I'm one of those people who designed my website, had a ton of fun doing it and learned a new skill. Now I'm quite interested in creating apps. Technology is becoming more accessible to non tech people, and Tara Reed is among the many who is informing and spreading the word. So Exciting!

As a software developer with a lot of UI driven development experience I watch this more as amusement. As systems become more complex, learning the code frameworks, writing the code and debugging is always easier and faster than doing the same with UI code builders. Especially as you can show code examples in a twitter comment where as for UI tool explanations must include many screenshots.

From my perspective, you can do what she says and build an app, I have no doubts about that. However, when you string together multiple platforms like that it becomes a lot harder to develop new features because now you have to spend time searching and manipulating tools and information from multiple platforms. Not to mention if something goes wrong it's a lot harder to troubleshoot the problem because you have to spend more time to figure out which platform is causing the problem. The comparison would be like how SpaceX produces their rockets vs how NASA does it. By developing most of their rockets' components in-house, they were able to save a lot of money and were able to achieve much better performance and troubleshoot much quicker. NASA on the other hand strung together contractors like Lockheed Martin, Boeing, etc to manufacture the parts. Even though it worked well at first, it ramped up the costs and took much longer to build the rockets. So I would still argue that if you can build your website or app platform from the ground up, it will take more effort up front but it will pay dividends in the long run.

I created my own app based in an idea I had 2 years ago, using "Kodular". Its the first app dedicated to my business area. 2 years ago I laughed about my own ambition. Today (01/01/21) I uploaded my app on google play and I am already thinking to publish in more languages.

​@@apik24 Sure. if you're doing Android, your best bet is to get into a consulting firm for starters. You'll want to study Kotlin first, Udemy has great courses. Packt has great books. You'll want to make a simple app and try getting into a consulting firm. It's helpful to practice leetcode for coding challenges.

@Shonda Taylor This just promotes bad development. As a programmer, you have a responsibility to understand ends and outs of your systems architecture. You need to understand the latest cryptography/security practices in order prevent and detect vulnerabilities before they lead to data exploitation and compromise sensitive information about your users. You need to be able to measure space and time complexities of your functions to ensure you aren't writing inefficient code that will lead to a bad user-experience or drain your users battery. And this is only the tip of the iceberg of what it takes to fulfill your role as a developer. This software, enables mediocre programming by people like this woman, who happily admit that they have no background in development. This often leads to huge problems (potentially dangerous ones, I might add). So while yes, I do think that more people should program and get there ideas out there, this is most definitely not the way to do it. The internet is full of great resources and tools, where anyone can learn the proper methodology and conventions that make up a good programmer; if you want to make something, stop being lazy and learn how to do it correctly. You do not deserve to call yourself a developer until you take the perspective and responsibilities of a proper developer. Your ignorance doesn't just effect your app, it effects everyone. Under the Data Protection act of 1984, it is your duty as a developer to maintain liability for your app and it's data. A breach of duty is illegal, but most of all, selfish. This is nothing to take lightly. People with visions aren't always the most scientifically inclined, and thats why there is a rather large difference between designers and developers. TL;DR: Either learn to program properly, or hire a developer to do it for you.

I can't give you an answer to that as it entirely depends on how quickly you learn and how much of a foundation you have so far. I would encourage you to at least attempt to cram a bit of learning in of the other languages (Swift, Objective-C, etc.) while you're doing java web development. Learning multiple languages give you the opportunity to experience different paradigms (such as Object Oriented, Object-Protocol Oriented, Functional/Procedural etc.) and really have a better understanding about programming in general. As far as your iOS goal goes, I would recommend you learn Swift. Swift is a beautiful open source language with many applications and useful frameworks. It has very easy syntax, which makes for a low barrier to entry, and the 'if let' / 'guard' statements make for safer code and less crashes at runtime. I literally just wrote my website's entire backend in the Swift framework Vapor, everything works perfectly. Most of Apple's source code is written in Objective-C right now, so it's good to have a good understanding of it too; however, a good bit of that code may change with their ground up redesign of iOS for 64bit architecture. For Android, I cant help you there at all. I don't develop for Android, and I personally hate Java. Java is a dying language in my opinion and I think Android needs a major redesign before I ever consider developing for them. It's very easy to have your premium apps that you've worked very hard on pirated and installed for free as well. Over all, experiment with different languages and make some cool stuff. There are plenty of resources out there, one could argue that you don't even need a college degree to write eloquent, functional code. You just need to be driven.

@@mcbthird It’s called technical debt. When you use a point and click tool there’s restrictions to what you can do. Later, you will want to do something that the platform cannot do for your business. You will then have to start from scratch. Countless no code businesses have contacted me because they want a new feature added that they can’t support. They always break down when they realise, they must start from scratch again. Technical debt is covered a lot, you can google this concept to read more. You will also struggle with scaling. Also, if 100% of your business needs can be met with a no code platform, then the barrier to entry is very low meaning that others can quickly move into the market. For instance, I knew a few people who ran medical events websites. They could never charge for their event hosting because every week it seemed like another couple of people would start-up a no code event hosting website. There was no shortage of people offering free services in the field to gain traction.

Point 1: This is how you get started. If you don't have a plan to migrate/evolve off of the low code solution, you're going to sink when it comes time to scale, either because it cannot keep up with your scale or the cost of scaling will exceed the value of your application(s) and with LCNC platforms, optimization is often a non-option due to the generic nature of the platform. For this, you will still need developers. Mostly true for user apps. LCNC solutions still work pretty well short, mid, and long term for internal applications imo.

One of my first jobs over 20 years ago was to take a "forms sitting on top of spreadsheet" abomination and turn it into a real application. I think coders have to look at it as the entertainment industry works. Producers, Directors, Writers and Actors. Tara is coming from the writer's perspective. The Idea to create things should not stop you because you can't code. Maybe the coders are the director's or the wonderful actors. They play their part in bring the script to life. But is the writer imagination that makes it worth completing. Just look at your favorite movie that is not all action driven. And to all the coders, this does not stop your imagination from creating something to help the world.

She completely failed. None coders don't seem to realise is that a lot of coding is translating real world problems into code. I've worked in two startups that got a total of over £10 million investment each and wrote my own medical simulation software that now has 6-figures profit. I've never seen an app take off from a no code platform. Google technical debt. You're comparing software engineering to Hollywood. You need to compare software engineering to other engineering fields. A lot of software engineering is understanding dataflow and how it relates to the real world problem. Software engineers are constantly automating the boring boilerplate code like deployment of a server using Docker, or database management using an ORM. No code scammers act like the software engineering community doesn't advance but just stays still.

I'm 17 and I have kept thinking of what I want to do after High School even though the year just started, I fall asleep thinking and day dream thinking. Problem is I feel a dead end and helpless from where to start. My parents think I need to get my head out the clouds. I believe if you really try your hardest at something and dedicate it can be achieved. I'm going to start my hardest on learning to complete my dream and accomplish my goal of success. She's speaking of middle-tier developers. A seasoned developer such as myself can throw a prototype together within a day. During my last project, using MVC, I created my model classes and database within a day and a half. Using "Code First" allowed me to automatically updated the database as needed during development. Also, you can scaffold any forms that may be needed within an application. If a developer knows his way around his chosen IDE, prototypes can be put together really fast. Requirements gathering is usually the biggest phase after dev-ops and testing.

All these depends on who the client is and what part of the world you find your self in. Here I Africa companies can hardly spend $3000 for a properly built application in this case what do would you as a developer do?? As a programmer...this hurt my head. How is this a Ted Talk? Why would they allow this? Is what she made an app? Sort of but that Frankenstein monster barely functions. Also, if it was a program written using commands and logic then its a code! She just poorly reinvented an already existing wheel. UGH! And what about design? I am a designer. I know little bit coding, but not that I would use texteditor, but still working in Dreamweaver (sometimes old Adobe Muse) and Animate etc. But without planning the App or website, without having proper structure and then having proper branding in these days the App or website can end looking just like kindergarten project and when not working properly will do more damage as good. I don't know why everyone is afraid using code. I started full visually and now here and there I am going to code and changing it. Learning it - it is not biting. Promising building app without coding is like these software which makes you generate logo and branding without having designer's knowledge. Just not working. Be professional.

As a UX Designer, knowing enough Front-end development to be dangerous. I can see the value in having an app builder that requires no code, however that editor and its code base still needs to be created and maintained by development team. Maybe when AI becomes sophisticated enough to code and update applications itself, maybe it'll be possible. Although, that's going to take a while.

AppSheet is an app turns spreadsheet into app; MightyNetworks ; Thinkific; Cloudmatch; I’m watching a webinar from her which is how I’m getting this info. iOS uses Swift, the Apple Books app does have instructions teaching how to write the code
