Using quality materials can help make your models look more realistic and professional. In this video I will show your some of the products and methods commercially available and will unbox the Tamiya 1/20 Seat belt set F and the Tamiya 1/24 Ings Z power wing set.
I then look at a variety of different models which I have made and show what materials were used to make the seat belts. I finish with giving a brief tutorial for using photo etch buckles.

Have you used any of these techniques? Is there an aftermarket seat belt kit which you really like? Let me know!

Good video. I use ribbon for seatbelts and a lot of patience threading them. For the decals I put them on as normal then use Tamiya X20A as a decal softener. It’s quite harsh so care must be taken but it melts the decal into the fabric and has the added advantage that it looks woven in. Credit for that to Paul from ISM.

Thanks, Ian. I'll have to look out for that x20a, cheers! 👍

Very useful and informative video 👍 I have used the Edward photo-etched seatbelts in 1/43 scale. They were very difficult to use and very difficult to keep in place. They look nice though but are prone to paint chips when you have been struggling to fit them in so I don’t recommend them. I will try your more practical materials next time. Thank you again for your excellent video.

Thank you for your kind words. I'd like to try some of the Eduard ones but 1/43 is pretty small. I didn't get on very well with ribbons so I decided to try a few different types. I'm glad you found my video helpful.

I've picked up lots of tips and useful info since I started watching your channel Thomas, thank you! I quite like the ribbon and buckle method for regular seatbelts. I got some resin buckles from eBay that work quite nicely. Also I ended up getting the Lotus 7 that comes with those sticker/photoetch belts but they are so fiddly and the belt keeps sticking to itself so I've been putting off making the passenger seat belts for a few days now after struggling with the driver's side haha

I can totally understand - they are very fiddly! The main issue with ribbons is making sure the end doesn't fray too much as that can make threading basically impossible. Nice sharp scissors can help there!

Nice video Thomas. I get 50yrds of 1/16" (2mm) ribbon from amazon for like $5 or $7. I have Black and red, but I need to pick up some blue soon. I also get photo etch seat belt hardware from model car garage . com as you get enough to do standard belts for several cars. They also have a harness set.

The ribbon does look good when done right and it's good value! I'll have to look up that website - I find the PE parts the hardest to find. Thanks, Justin! 👍

i noticed with your tyrell model, the figures arms are not glued in. I also build and paint mini wargame figures and a suggestion would be to use tiny magnets and magnetize the drivers arms so they are positionable and stay in place. thanks for all your tips!

Thanks Dean, I made that one a while ago but definitely I'll try that next time I make a driver figure.
