A lot of DIY’rs would forget the importance of drilling the stress relief hole at the end of a crack even if you’re welding it.

Leave the second pully. I have a 1971 240z that came with Ac. It wasnt common but on the higher end models you could get an optional Ac. package.

To the best of my knowledge power steering was not available on 70-78 Z cars. The first (nearest engine) groove was for the smog pump and/or A/C where applicable, the second (furthest) was for alternator and water pump.

There's a really nice ELECTRIC power steering conversion from zpowersteering.com I put it in my 260z. Works great and I'm happy I spent the $$$ for it (Yes, it's not cheap!)

Stripper? Just "paint it" with brake fluid and leave for about half hour then whip. It will remover everything down to the metal.
@victorylanel31506 жыл бұрын
nice to see ya changed those engine mounts😉. I think you'll find the inside pulley is AC, middle is fan and a PS would be a small bolt on outside. Given the mods to the water pump perhaps you have one off a LD28 diesel?
@oldbustedhotness59946 жыл бұрын
Victorylane L all I know is the back pulley lines up so you may be right.

@bartscanland94156 жыл бұрын
Why didn't you get the correct water pump? That's ultimately what led to the need for a different alternator.
@oldbustedhotness59946 жыл бұрын
So long story short. The pump housing or timing chain cover was corroded o the point that it was like having a bad water bump. At the time we could not locate a good one. (North Idaho) so I remachined the cover we had. So now all the alignments are off. So all new alternators need to be adjusted accordingly. If you look closely pump doesn't line up with main pully. Didn't want to go into that on video so I basically skip that fact. Close enough for government work. Good catch.

I’m thinking about building a Datsun 240-280z and I think I found a place to start and i’m going to look at it soon but is there anything I should look out for? like rust in certain areas or anything that would indicate that something isn’t good about it.
@oldbustedhotness59946 жыл бұрын
Antonio Delfino the better question is we're should I not look for rust? The answer is no where. 1 lower part of front fenders by doors. 2 Entire sill plate under door. 3 all along rear wheel well fender. 4 lower corners of windshield rubber. 5 under rear hatch all along top plate above tail lights. And of corse. 6 Both foot well floor pans. I had one z where the front sway bar mounts had rusted out the fram. Last 7 where the spare tire goes.

Dont remove the second pulley that assembly is balanced and couldnt removing that disrupt the rotating assembly balance......prolly super minimal but the same could be said about removing that pulley just for looks just my two cents

look into carb spacers. it looks like you are not running them and it helps with tuning. i think the race cars would have to run the smaller spacers do to a rule not 100% positive

The old saying "when you only have a hammer, everything looks like a nail" --> "when you have a powder coating setup everything looks like..." I won't say what I think it looks like, other than in the first part of the video I thought that was the before pictures, not the after...
@timwing43795 жыл бұрын

Machine the wart of an extra pully of the double pully jonny
I hope that you didn't machine off the other pulley landing. It's much more difficult to put it back if you need it later on than to just leave it there. You never know what you might want to do in the future

On my '72 240z, I took off my three pulley balancer (Alternator, Smog, AC) and replaced with a single pulley from ZcarDepot (zcardepot.com/harmonic-balancer-damper.html) Reduced the weight by 10lbs!
@oldbustedhotness59946 жыл бұрын
Nicholas Bennington not so wored about the weight. Just the look. But good to know they have a single pulley replacement.
@jbour8756 жыл бұрын
machine off the pulley if you haven't already. its an inline 6 and should be balanced very well, and its not like its helping any. it could help with rotational mass but you're probably running a stock flywheel so who cares.
