Well here's one I've been looking forward to....Building David's iconic Strat. Every ding, scratch and dent using pictures from the famous Christies auction.

I built a Gilmour Black Strat myself a couple of years ago. Didn't go from scratch but got a Mexican Fender body, Northwest Guitars neck and pick guard, Fender Fat 50s & CS69 neck and middle pickups and finally a Seymour Duncan custom shop SSL-1 DG pickup for the bridge (not really necessary as the SSL-5 is the same pickup, I just had them do a bit of tinkering to mine). All in all came in at around £650 which is a lot but it's a damn site cheaper than the Fender signature Gilmour guitar. For the price of it, which if I remember right was roughly £10, I'd recommend you go get a pick guard from Northwest Guitars as they do one that's 1 ply black and has the little hole for the mini toggle switch that Gilmour used to add the bridge pickup to positions 1 & 2 on the main switch. They also sell the little bracket that holds the mini toggle switch down at the correct depth for about 3 or 4 quid. Not affiliated or sponsored, just a couple of great products to get you closer to the Black Strat! Apart from that, going to be watching this build closely and checking out your other vids as this one made me laugh!

DIY guy here. The gear. I tried it all. From original to forged, from expensive to the cheap. Does so called "quality" gear sound better? Yes, but not in the way you would maybe think. For example the bridge. You don't need a voodoo original Fender bridge, but Gotoh 510 does the job really well, and costs a half. It's made of metals so hard, that ie. drilling a hole for piezo pickup is a challenge. And because of that it also: - keeps the tuning better, - alllows you to hear the f** difference when you touch the whammy bar, - sounds as long as it should. If you touch the bar on a cheap bridge, it just does not react so well and it dies very quick. Is the sound itself better or different? No. But you can have more fun with the sound you already had. Does the springs change the sound? No. It changes how the bridge reacts. More strings make it more stable when double stop bend. Tuners? Get the best, as you will use it a lot. Get a good bone or tusq nut and you are good to go.

It's had at least 4 necks. No electrics are original, essentially they were only used after he got it back. Oh bridge is original. I just find it funny is all. I love the fact that Gilmour Sold the original guitar in auction for a huge amount and now plays 2 of the Fender Custom shop ones that he spec'd . I also recall feeling pretty chuffed with myself buying an Epiphone 335 in Guitar Guitar in around 2012 and as I went to pay this guys girlfriend next to my had just bought him the Cusom shop GIlmour guitar and it was on the counter next to me, I was totally deflated, I hope he bloody married that lass.

Glmour's _first_ Black Strat with the fat headstock and rosewood board is the guitar I wish he still had. Very Hendrix-ey vibes from that axe, beautiful clean tone, from chimey, to throaty, to almost tele-like. Too bad it was stolen, never to surface again.

LMAO. I just finished modding a Squier Affinity Strat with a maple neck into a David Gilmour Strat ! I also installed a Fender pre-wired Tex-Mex black pickguard for a better sound. Most Fender parts can be used with Squier Affinity Strats.

Gilmour is the man but I came across both Brian May and Mick Ronson first as a kid. I think May was probably what made me pester my parents to get me a guitar (ropey Kay-type acoustic). It actually makes a nice change to see a strat being built - a lot of builds seem to avoid them.

I prefer the "small" headstock too. Never liked the bigger CBS ones. I'm also a devotee of Gilmour from back when I heard Another Brick In The Wall Pt 2, the then UK Xmas #1, when I was 9 and I was instantly hooked. But it wouldn't be until my 12th birthday when I actually successfully persuaded my folks to buy me a guitar! I do also find it amusing that Jim Irsay, who bought The Black Strat, spent $3,975,000 on what is ostensibly "Trigger's Broom" Haha!

Easiest way to do it at home is to slap a loaded pickguard on a black 50s style Stratocaster from the Fender-family (Squier Classic vibe, vintera, roadworn) and be done with it.

Hi Paul! This is going to be a good one. That scratchplate is bothering me though, Gilmour's doesn't have the white line round the edge. I've got an old one-ply black scratchplate you can have if you want, I think it would look more accurate. If you message me your address I'd be happy to send it to you.

No. I'm aiming at the spec he used when his Strat went to auction. I think the EMG gear was in his red strat. They were passive. A very kind custom pickup winder has donated a beautiful period correct loaded pickguard for the project. There were so many configurations over the years, EMG, Lace, custom shop...You can almost take your pick.
